new Workforce. As GenAI masters an expanding set of tasks, companies will need to calibrate their strategic workforce planning to hire and train for skills that promote effective LLM use and supervision. Autonomous agents raise the prospect of automation of entire workflows, rather than discrete tasks. This means that entire functional and business unit teams will need to be reconfigured, with the potential to significantly reduce labor requirements and costs in future. To gauge their preparedness, companies should stress test their workforce planning using scenarios with increasing end-to-end workflow automation.Fortune, 7h ago
new Not only will innovation stimulate substantial growth and create new markets, we believe it also will disrupt sectors which historically have stoked high inflation. We believe that global oil demand is likely to peak within the next few years as electric vehicles begin to scale and as autonomous electric taxi networks account for an increasing share of miles traveled. DNA sequencing will introduce science to health care decision-making in a way never before possible, minimizing the guess work and eliminating waste. At the same time, robots will serve not only as an antidote to labor shortages that are cropping up in the US, Japan, China, and elsewhere, but also should increase productivity, one of the most powerful forces against inflation.Ark Invest, 7h ago
new One of the key takeaways from the conversation is the acknowledgment of GenAI’s immediate impact on job markets. GenAI has already begun reshaping industries, resulting in the displacement of jobs in certain sectors. However, experts, including Sam Altman, believe that GenAI’s true potential extends beyond its initial disruptions. While jobs have been lost to AI-driven efficiency gains, there is a growing consensus that GenAI will ultimately alleviate workers from mundane tasks, providing them the time and freedom to focus on more creative and innovative aspects of their roles. This transformation is anticipated to lead to the creation of more high-quality jobs, an improved quality of life, and increased wealth, although in a significantly altered job landscape.CDInsights, 15h ago
new Change is never easy, particularly large organisational shifts like the ones that can be expected through the adoption of generative AI. The nature of some roles may change, along with established methods that many employees will have become accustomed to over the years. However, with the proper learning and development initiatives in place, such as group coaching, the collaborative mindset can be continued long term and steps can be taken to break down organisational silos. The European Business Review, 15h ago

When did we stop believing that we should tell young people to study what invigorates and inspires them? There are several answers to this question: historical answers rooted in market crashes and vampiric student loan practices; cultural answers that point toward STEM-heavy notions of success and prestige; societal answers that relate to a general devaluation of the humanities. But they all converge around the notion that certain majors lead to certain jobs and so we scramble to prove that an English major does well on this front. Even if I agree—and I do, not least because my communication and writing skills helped me get those STEM jobs—there’s something rotten at the core of this logic. My sense is that the number of people whose undergraduate major directly informs what they do is in fact very small; it’s hard to draw a straight line from an undergraduate transcript to the work that someone in human relations or marketing or even law or medicine performs on a daily basis.Inside Higher Ed | Higher Education News, Events and Jobs, 7d ago
It is often reported that AI will generate millions of jobs in the future and that it will make significant contributions to the global economy due to increased productivity – some claim it could add around $13tn to global output by 2030. But it is important to question the methodologies behind these findings because it is not possible to predict the future. Who will benefit from AI and who will not?...I by IMD, 10d ago
We continue our journey from the post Optimize hyperparameters with Amazon SageMaker Automatic Model Tuning. We previously explored a single job optimization, visualized the outcomes for SageMaker built-in algorithm, and learned about the impact of particular hyperparameter values. On top of using HPO as a one-time optimization at the end of the model creation cycle, we can also use it across multiple steps in a conversational manner. Each tuning job helps us get closer to a good performance, but additionally, we also learn how sensitive the model is to certain hyperparameters and can use this understanding to inform the next tuning job. We can revise the hyperparameters and their value ranges based on what we learned and therefore turn this optimization effort into a conversation. And in the same way that we as ML practitioners accumulate knowledge over these runs, Amazon SageMaker Automatic Model Tuning (AMT) with warm starts can maintain this knowledge acquired in previous tuning jobs for the next tuning job as well.CoinGenius, 24d ago

For individuals to better understand why compost can replace fertilizers we need to "be able to demonstrate to end users the value… of using commercial compost." The groups discussed actions to develop new delivery models (train the trainer and individual) and that a regional panel of experts could be established to review and develop new materials. Some discussion was had about who should provide the education with at least one group coalescing around the idea that Illinois Extension could train community-based organizations who in turn could train community members. There were also ideas on how compost education could be improved for both teachers and students by hiring school sustainability specialists, encouraging/incorporating composting practices in schools, connecting composting to other subjects such as biology and environmental sciences, making sure teachers were experienced home composters, and in general figuring out how to get composting added to school curriculum either by contacting...extension.org, 2d ago

new An important component of that program was a shift away from what Edinger called “suggestion box culture,” empowering staff to make process improvements on their own. The approach was successful in Denver, and while Edinger said it will not be identical for OIT, he wants to use employee expertise to hone government service delivery. After only a week in the job, he is still focused on learning as much as possible about his new agency. This involves asking questions about existing processes and goals so that his future work can help align the agency need with the goals of Gov. Jared Polis. Specifically, the governor’s top five statewide priorities include energy, health, crime prevention, land use and tax reform.“When I made the leap from a city like Denver, the capital city, to the actual capital, then you know that the challenges change a little bit,” he said, highlighting not just the difference in scale but also the unique needs of different parts of the state. For example, Denver is composed of 78 unique neighborhoods, but Edinger said the municipality makes up less than 1 percent of the state geographically.GovTech, 2d ago

Digital government will be easy to use, consistent in its appearance and functionality, offer a complete selection of services that are unified across agencies, and available around the clock. Citizens will be aware of their rights to privacy and able to control governmental use of their personal information.”Current NASCIO President and Tennessee CIO Stephanie Dedmon set out to assess progress against the goals outlined in that paper, publishing a companion report this year. It points to a catalog of citizen-facing digital accomplishments recognized by NASCIO in the intervening years, including Tennessee’s MyTN App, which offers users more than 60 services from many different departments accessible with single sign-on. The updated report also includes evidence of how the personalized, user-focused, cyber- and privacy-aware aspirations have matured in the real world, creating new challenges along the way. The larger goals of effective technology that is focused on the user, however, remain largely the same.A recent report from KPMG, Tomorrow’s Government Today, surveyed residents and government leaders at the state and federal levels, acknowledging some of the challenges ahead for CIOs. I'm also an artist. My job involves a mix of graphic design and web development, and I make some income on the side from a Patreon supporting my personal work- all of which could be automated in the near future by generative AI. And I also think that's a good thing.Copyright has always been a necessary evil. The atmosphere of fear and uncertainty it creates around remixes and reinterpretations has held back art- consider, for example, how much worse modern music would be without samples, a rare case where artists operating in a legal grey area with respect to copyright became so common that artists lost their fear. That fear still persists in almost every other medium, however, forcing artists to constantly reinvent the wheel rather than iterating on success. Copyright also creates a really enormous amount of artificial scarcity- limiting peoples' access to art to a level far below what we have the technical capacity to provide. All because nobody can figure out a better way of funding artists than granting lots of little monopolies.Once our work is automated and all but free, however, we'll have the option of abolishing copyright altogether. That would free artists to create whatever we'd like; free self-expression from technical barriers; free artistic culture from the distorting and wasteful influence of zero-sum status competition. Art, I suspect, will get much, much better- and as someone who loves art, that means a lot to me.And as terrible as this could be for my career, spending my life working in a job that could be automated but isn't would be as soul-crushing as being paid to dig holes and fill them in again. It would be an insultingly transparent facsimile of useful work. An offer of UBI, but only if I spend eight hours a day performing a ritual imitation of meaningful effort. No. If society wants to pay me for the loss of my profession, I won't refuse, but if I have to go into construction or whatever to pay the bills while I wait to find out whether this is all going to lead to post-scarcity utopia or apocalypse, then so be it.lesswrong.com, 22d ago

new Pros: Integrated systems are easier to scale and standardize across an enterprise. The ability to create both a consistent user interface and a consistent user experience equates to less resources needed to support the spaces. Integrated systems also allow for greater automation. For example, upon the room starting up, cameras and microphones can automatically record and stream to the institution’s preferred collaboration platform. Auto-tracking cameras and whiteboard capture devices mean that faculty members do not have to be skilled video producers to capture and send their content to remote participants. Lastly, integrated systems allow for more flexibility in the use of the space, regardless of the need for collaboration tools.Commercial Integrator, 2d ago

Mentoring and nurturing individuals in these communities can build a pipeline of talent to serve as future board members. This holistic understanding of diversity provides the board with access to a wide range of perspectives, driving improved problem-solving and creativity, which leads to better business outcomes. Research shows that companies with diverse boards tend to have higher financial returns and may be better at risk management.Infosecurity Magazine, 3d ago
In deciding the courses that we offer to high-school students and in determining the most effective ways for the students to struggle productively with the material, we cannot ignore the fact that high-performing schools are steered by the expectations of selective colleges. These universities want to see their engineering majors take AP Physics, for instance. So at BLS we offer both AP Physics courses, the one in mechanics and the one in electricity and magnetism. We encourage our students interested in engineering to select one or both of them in junior or senior year, sometimes at the sacrifice of an elective they might prefer. Large universities regularly subject their freshmen to impersonal lectures in large halls, with their entire grade depending on a couple of high-stakes exams, so we recognize that there’s a place for students needing to practice taking in large amounts of information verbally and visually. Students learn to break that information down into outlines that they can study from later. We also run a week of final exams at the end of each school year so that students become accustomed to preparing for cumulative timed exams. Admissions officers strain to find ways to sort through students with similar GPAs, poring over evidence of leadership in their extracurricular activities as one potentially distinctive characteristic. So while BLS students are already strapped for time due to the six major subjects they take each year, they pile on deep commitments to their clubs, bands, sports, and part-time jobs.Education Next, 3d ago

These technological developments have in turn led to increasing trust. Whilst, comparatively, technologies such as these are still relatively new in relation to traditional, age-old manufacturing methods, many advanced manufacturers are already trusting 3D printing/AM as a technology able to meet and exceed their expectations. Users trust that the economics of 3D printing stack up against other manufacturing technologies. End users trust 3D printed components in mission-critical applications. 3D printing cannot replace all forms of manufacturing, but when the application fits the technology, 3D printing should be thought of in the same way as injection moulding or CNC machining: the right tool for the job. Indeed, it’s a highly competitive tool which is making practical and economic sense for more jobs, applications and sectors year on year. The Engineer, 25d ago

Over the past 30 years in England, 14 Government strategies and nearly 700 policies have attempted to reduce levels of obesity and failed. These policies have focused mostly on individual behaviour change and have been non-interventionist. One example, the 5-a-day campaign, illustrates this education-behaviour gap. The message has been communicated widely for over thirty years, with up to 85% of individuals aware of the message, yet the average intake of fruit and vegetables has remained stagnant, with only 33% of adults and 12% of children meeting the targets. Equally, suggestions that low-income groups, who are at higher risk of food poverty and obesity, could improve their diets by learning to cook are inaccurate. Lower income groups are in fact more likely to cook at least once a day than higher income groups, but the number of meals cooked at home overall is low across all groups in the UK. Time availability in the UK is low, with 75% of the UK citizens (aged 16-65) in employment compared to 66% average in Europe according to the OECD. On a scale from 1-10, the OECD scored work-life balance in the UK at 5.6 compared with 8.0 in Germany and 9.4 in Italy. Thus cooking and nutrition education programmes have also been ineffective at treating the root cause of unhealthy diets. Their implementation through school cooking lessons has also been disparately distributed with 50% of primary schools receiving 10 hours or fewer, but 10% receiving over 30 hours of tuition.tabledebates.org, 11d ago
...“So suddenly, a rider of choice … this becomes a much more of a viable option,” said Hoffman.Moves to a citywide dynamic microtransit system will make transit a more viable mobility option for the 650 households with no car, and about a third of the households with only one car, suggesting about 30 percent of the population has “the potential need for transit,” said Hoffman. It’s the kind of change that aids in workforce development by realistically getting workers to their jobs, and opens up access to fresh foods and shopping opportunities.“Opening grocery markets, in whatever way possible, basically creates more customers,” said Heather Arnold, senior manager for Economic Development for Physical Stores at Amazon, speaking on the panel. “What if we had better ways to get customers to the store?”Often, said Arnold, the market forces needed to develop a grocery store in many neighborhoods do not exist, given the cost of the development and revenue requirements. So, if cities can find ways to make it easier to get residents to the stores they already have, “food deserts” could be mitigated.“You cannot make a risky move that fails. You just can’t,” said Arnold, remarking on the idea of building a new store, given the narrow profit margins for grocery stores. The new transit system in Winchester goes live this spring. Fares will be free at first, and then transition to about $1 per ride. What riders care about, said Hoffman, is “how quickly can I get to the grocery store? And how much will it cost?”...GovTech, 3d ago

Management expertise and ready access to capital are two significant advantages that private enterprise can bring to the thousands of small water agencies that don’t have the size or financial heft to look for innovative technologies or new financial structures to make their job easier. For instance, when it comes to groundwater basins all over the world, but particularly in the American Southwest, overdrafts and sinking land can thwart the prospects of continued access to the aquifer. Small water districts have trouble measuring and thus controlling use. ...‘A mass assassination factory’: Inside Israel’s calculated bombing of Gaza…The Israeli army’s expanded authorization for bombing non-military targets, the loosening of constraints regarding expected civilian casualties, and the use of an artificial intelligence system to generate more potential targets than ever before, appear to have contributed to the destructive nature of the initial stages of Israel’s current war on the Gaza Strip, an investigation by +972 Magazine and Local Call reveals….The bombing of power targets, according to intelligence sources who had first-hand experience with its application in Gaza in the past, is mainly intended to harm Palestinian civil society: to “create a shock” that, among other things, will reverberate powerfully and “lead civilians to put pressure on Hamas,” as one source put it….Several of the sources, who spoke to +972 and Local Call on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the Israeli army has files on the vast majority of potential targets in Gaza — including homes — which stipulate the number of civilians who are likely to be killed in an attack on a particular target. This number is calculated and known in advance to the army’s intelligence units, who also know shortly before carrying out an attack roughly how many civilians are certain to be killed.Mondoweiss, 3d ago
As Johanna Alonso recently reported in her article, "Universities Can’t Accommodate All the Computer Science Majors" (Nov. 2), institutions across the country are facing a conundrum. STEM degrees are rapidly growing in popularity due to the perception that they’ll lead to better job outcomes with higher pay, but universities can’t keep up with demand. It’s not from a lack of trying or a lack of care; in fact, one faculty member is quoted as saying they’ve done “everything” to scale up their classes, and that faculty across the board feel strongly about meeting the demand. Yet “everything” is really just code for “more of the same”: hiring more faculty and building new facilities to reduce ballooning class sizes. Measures like these can help, but they’re not a sustainable solution for achieving scale. Instead, they’re yet another example of higher ed’s tendency to over-index on what we already know how to do, rather than exploring new, innovative models that could benefit students, institutions, and the workforce.Inside Higher Ed | Higher Education News, Events and Jobs, 3d ago

The bill would also extend support to Navajo uranium miners who have been excluded from downwinder benefits. The measure is tied up in a larger defense-spending package, but White seems cautiously optimistic. “We are closer than we have ever been before, but we know how much we still have to lose,” she says. White is especially frustrated by the investment of federal dollars in job-training programs to recruit young people from communities like hers. “The first weapons were tested on us,” she says, “and now our kids are funneled into it.”...Scientific American, 3d ago
Jim Davis: I do not see pushback from the existing workforce. There is generally high interest in engaging, as Dan says. I will add, though, that workers need to be aware, see leadership interest, and have access to the capabilities. We still see the gap widening between the larger companies that have the resources and those that don’t, and we still don’t see that manufacturing is viewed as a particularly high-tech profession from a future workforce standpoint. I did want to mention there can be workforce concerns with privacy and personal intrusion if AI is used to monitor individuals. I really like this new term of “co-piloting” that has emerged. It better communicates the value of using AI to support the worker to do his or her job better. The Manufacturing Leadership Council, 3d ago

This has generated changes across the curriculum (especially in introductory STEM courses), as we have a much larger cohort of talented and ambitious students with relatively weak high school preparation, sitting alongside classmates with the finest secondary education the world has to offer. Student interests have changed dramatically: computer science has moved from a niche major (Yale being perhaps the most humanities and arts–oriented of the major private research universities) to one of the largest majors in the college. The ubiquity of smartphones and social media has altered undergraduate behavior and social life beyond recognition. The added stress to adolescents from being perpetually on display to the world may be related to the dramatic rise of mental health concerns. I do not remember any student asking for leniency on the grounds of mental health prior to 2010, whereas now many students have formal academic accommodations, and they all feel free to appeal for extensions and the like due to mental health difficulties on a regular basis.Inside Higher Ed | Higher Education News, Events and Jobs, 3d ago
The U.S. Government Strategy on International Basic Education for Fiscal Years 2019-23 (the Strategy) was released in September 2018. The strategy demonstrates the U.S. government’s commitment to international education and presents an opportunity to advance global diplomatic and development leadership on pressing international education challenges, as called for in the Reinforcing Education Accountability in Development (aka READ) Act, Division 2, P.L. 115-56. The goal of the strategy is to achieve a world where education systems in partner countries enable all individuals to acquire the education and skills needed to be productive members of society. To accomplish this goal, the U.S. government has two principal objectives: 1) improve learning outcomes, and 2) expand access to quality basic education for all, particularly marginalized populations. The U.S. government recognizes that its investments in international education serve as a force multiplier for all its work in international development. Strengthening education systems in developing countries advances U.S. foreign policy goals, promotes U.S. and international security, and helps accelerate economic growth at home and abroad.United States Department of State, 3d ago
Upskilling employees to create talent is crucial to the growth and development of the workforce, but like other strategic investments, it requires a thoughtful, methodical approach to yield the best results. In most business transformations, organizations (like individuals) move on a journey from literacy, a basic understanding of the skills, to mastery (full competence on what is needed to be successful in their role. Each step along this journey requires different learning interventions or “modalities” to yield the desired outcomes. For example, self-study digital learning modules are effective to build a basic understanding of concepts, but for learners to be competent and proficient, they need hands-on experience with the technology or practice through behavioral scenarios to be effective. Having said this, this journey can’t begin unless the starting point is understood. Organizations must invest in objectively benchmarking the current skills of the workforce so that the appropriate learning solution can be recommended and, more importantly, skill transformation can be measured.RTInsights, 3d ago
Vulnerabilities in these areas can cost millions of dollars in lost opportunities if not correctly governed. The adoption of digital business platforms will be on the rise to support this area, given the ROI on harmonizing operations around a centralized control tower with a composable ecosystem. A digital control tower with embedded AI and agile automation ready at all times is the answer.Best ERP Software, Vendors, News and Reviews, 3d ago
The EITC is an effective tool that encourages work, reduces poverty and already benefits low-wage workers. My legislation will build on its powerful impact. Too often, Americans are forced to make a choice between working outside the home and being a full-time caregiver. My legislation makes unpaid caregiving pay, while providing these workers with the flexibility to receive most of these funds on a monthly basis. Not only do caregivers forgo promotions or change their career trajectory altogether to accommodate the needs of their loved ones, but they also shoulder additional costs to meet the medical, housing and care needs of their loved ones. These costs can include paying for home renovations to improve accessibility for their loved one or childcare. These monthly payments can provide a cushion to help pay for transportation costs associated with caregiving or even help offset lost wages. I also have a proposal to improve the Social Security program and recognize more forms of work. My legislation, the Social Security Enhancement and Protection Act, would allow the years a parent cares for a young child to count toward Social Security coverage. There are numerous ways to acknowledge caregivers’ labor. The Hill, 3d ago
Any time you hand an area of life to criminal operators, you surrender much accountability as well. In the case of illegal immigration, you also give up control over who mixes into crowds cutting border fences. Customs and Border Protection says its "top priority is to keep terrorists and their weapons from entering the United States" and documents arrests of "criminal noncitizens." But it's easier for potential undesirables to hide in large crowds swelled by innocent people who have no other pathways to entry than it would be if legal immigration were easier and more aspiring migrants were at home filing paperwork.Reason.com, 3d ago

On the automotive assembly lines at Toyota in Japan, cables hung from the ceiling near each operator station that could be pulled to stop the assembly line. The idea was that if any operator saw a problem with a part, they could stop the line and effectively call all knowledgeable employees to best address a production concern. The team was immediately assembled (including the operator) to address any issues before the line was started again. This tool was used by Toyota to perfect its assembly line production quality and was considered a big contributor to the success of lean manufacturing. We adopted the Andon tool at the plant where I worked in North America by installing Andon cords on the assembly line. Now understand that when the assembly line stops, the plant effectively stops making money—often to the tune of thousands of dollars per minute. So as much as there was a cable the operator could use to stop the line if anything was amiss, the operators and supervisors were discouraged from ever pulling it, thus negating any benefit. Toyota embraced a culture where the line operator (the closest person to the decision of whether the product is good or bad) was the most valuable person in the plant for this decision. Conversely, in North America, the impression was that the higher your salary, the more valuable you were, making the line operator one of the least valuable people in the plant. So, if any operator pulled the cable for any reason it was seen as a way to get out of work and typically the first person to respond to the action was the plant superintendent telling the supervisors to get the line running again, regardless of the issue, before any investigation or discussion could happen. The problem was never that the automotive plant I worked at didn’t implement the lean tools; the problem was that nobody at GM at the time embraced lean manufacturing as a cultural change.Ivey Business Journal, 20d ago
In an era of pandemics, natural disasters, and ongoing conflicts, plants anywhere in the world can be impacted by the unexpected and manufacturers may need to make purchasing decisions based on availability. One complicating factor early on in the pandemic was the sudden imbalance in demand; as workers and students invested in technologies needed for home computing, sales of legacy components boomed. At the same time, specialty components needed for medical devices became a manufacturing priority. Supply chains struggled to shift directions. A few months later, they needed to shift again when, as economies reopened, demand for automotive products took precedence, which reverberated across manufacturing. In particular, shortages of chips needed for modern automotive technologies led to disruptions across numerous supply chains. Without chips, cars could not be produced, and vehicle shortages created stress in other markets. Now demand is set to change direction again, as conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East push demand in a new direction, impacting MIL-spec markets.Connector and Cable Assembly Supplier, 27d ago
Padmanabhan explains that there is a notion surrounding the idea that AI is designed to replace humans. “Studies have shown that automation will lead to the redundancy of particular jobs fuelling anxiety around the emergence of AI. However, what the sceptics often miss is the role of AI in augmenting human intelligence as well as enhancing the efficacy of repetitive function. And that development and deployment of AI technology would give rise to new jobs that don’t exist today.”...aimagazine.com, 28d ago
The ongoing startup movement, booming digital innovation, and global demands and opportunities to build deep-tech solutions based on STEM learnings have led to skyrocketing demand for deep-tech skillsets, which in turn has re-emphasized the importance of STEM education at the grassroots level in India. This makes it all the more important for the government, education sector, and companies to collaborate and work together to nurture an ecosystem that promotes the growth of STE(A)M skills in the country through incorporation of equivalent programmes in the curriculum and investment in long-term upskilling and training programmes. For instance, at Zoho Schools of Learning—Zoho’s in-house alternative to conventional college education, the student curriculum is thoughtfully designed to integrate art and culture with STEM concepts to nurture young minds to be the visionaries of tomorrow’s problems.CXOToday.com - Technology News, Business Technology News, Information Technology News, Tech News India, 24d ago
..."It's heartbreaking to turn away so many talented students," said Grossman. The pandemic caused many students to decide college wasn't for them. But despite the downturn, interest in pursuing computer science across the state remained high.Nearly 1,250 students earned bachelor's degrees in computer science at Washington colleges and universities last year, according to the Washington Student Achievement Council. At Washington State University, the number of students pursuing computer science in the last decade has almost quadrupled. At Western Washington University, the number has nearly tripled. And at Eastern Washington University, interest was increasing before the pandemic, dipped slightly, and returned this year to a similar number as in 2014."We aren't surprised by the demand," Grossman added. "There are so many creative students that have creative ideas for how to have computers do new things."Grossman hopes the Allen School can continue expanding to keep up with the demand, but it would need to hire more faculty and teaching assistants, as well as additional budgeting, to accommodate more students.Magdalena Balazinska, director of the Allen School, said AI is helping students focus on the most interesting part of computer science: answering big software design questions.Grossman said many of the recent tech layoffs were a response to a huge surge of hiring at the start of the pandemic, when tech companies needed new jobs filled. There's still high demand from employers who want qualified computer science majors — so much so that some of the tech world's biggest employers like Amazon, Microsoft and Google, sponsor programs in high schools to help students get ahead.Amazon's Future Engineer program, the tech giant's 6-year-old global education philanthropic program, aims to increase access to computer science, education and career exploration for students, particularly those from historically underserved communities.During the summer the company offers an Amazon Career Quest program for rising sophomores, juniors and seniors for two weeks. Students learn skills like how to build a résumé and speak in front of a crowd, and they hear from Amazon employees about their jobs to learn what their options could be.They also learn computer science skills such as creating music remixes with Python, a high-level programming language, or creating a project with a micro:bit, a tiny circuit board designed to help students learn to code and create technology.Sahar Abid, 17, a participant in Amazon's career quest this summer, created a tool to help students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Her micro:bit alerts someone studying to take a pause every 30 minutes and reflect on what they are doing. This could help a student avoid fixating on something that is unproductive, a common problem for students diagnosed with ADHD."It is trying to help with mindfulness, to help people manage their schedules," Abid said. "And it also reminds you to take breaks. ... You might forget to eat, drink water or go to the bathroom and take care of yourself."Amazon also granted $40,000 scholarships to high school seniors across the country to study computer science or engineering in college and a 12-week paid internship at Amazon after the first year of college. Six of the scholarships went to Seattle Public Schools students this year.Microsoft offers the Technology Education and Learning Support program, which works to build sustainable computer science programs in high schools. TEALS works to teach teachers how to teach computer science by pairing them with industry volunteers. Microsoft awards scholarships to women and nonbinary people pursuing coding.Google's Code Next program also works to train Black, Latino and Indigenous students to be tech leaders. AI is also valuable for problem solving as it can identify patterns, make decisions based on data, and analyze datasets, making it useful in healthcare, finance, and scientific research. It can analyze large amounts of data faster and provide us with insight based on these data; thus, AI also improves our decision-making in many fields, including business, healthcare, and finance. AI is also helping with autonomous systems, such as self-driving cars, which will eventually lead to fewer accidents and optimize our transportation system. There are many other benefits of AI, and its impact on our economic growth is huge, creating new industries, improving overall productivity, and creating job opportunities.Airmeet, 5d ago

In a rapidly evolving business technology landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in management. The predictive capabilities of AI have equipped managers with data-driven foresight, enabling them to monitor and anticipate market trends, business risks, customer preferences, and employee behaviors, thereby facilitating more evidence-based decisions. However, as we explore the future of management, we recognize that the potential of AI extends beyond prediction. The emerging generative capabilities of AI represent a leap forward, fostering creativity and enabling innovative ideas, designs, and solutions. With its user-friendly interface, generative AI makes it easier for a broader swath of the population to get involved in AI-enabled problem solving. The synergies between the predictive and generative capabilities of AI are undeniable. Predictive insights fuel generative processes, while generative outputs enhance predictive accuracy. This powerful extension of AI, from prediction machines to generative problem-solvers, presents the potential for AI to transform a host of conventional management practices, heralding an era where artificial agents complement and potentially replace managers and knowledge workers in a variety of organizational settings. These developments have the potential to fundamentally alter the nature of the firm, the future of work, and management theories.AOM_CMS, 4d ago

With the confluence of our PL expertise, professional experience, and macro-environmental factors, we realized there was an opportunity to support busy academic library workers in incorporating PL into their roles by bringing together evidence-based, theory-informed, and practical models. An edited volume felt like the natural progression of our research to create a platform for PL practitioners to share their work across all areas of academic librarianship. With our profession’s unique ethical commitment to privacy, growing social justice issues relating to algorithmic bias and surveillance capitalism, and a dearth of support in higher education for this much-needed literacy, we envision the book as the first of many to establish library workers as campus and societal thought leaders on privacy issues.Library Journal, 12d ago

As Rhino Foods’s employees became more adept at “playing the game of business” as the former hockey coach Ted put it, they could leverage their abilities to train an entirely different group of new employees. These were refugees from Bosnia, Bhutan, Nepal, and Rwanda. First, Rhino Foods enrolled them in ESL classes. Then, current employees began training them in company’s collaborative approach to decision making and working together. As an interesting example, Soichiro Honda, Honda Motor Company founder was known by wearing blue-collar clothes when visiting Honda plants, where the workforce would feel at ease to speak freely, therefore sharing valuable pieces of information with him [2]. Actually, part of the workforce across such giant manufacturer would not even recognize the ‘big boss’. A similar example comes from Konosuke Matsushita and the way he used to interrelate with his workforce across many of his companies’ operations, and where the same pattern of informality would provide this top leader with the highest quality and unfiltered information, while at the same time motivating the workforce due to his amicable style. At his early times as the company’s top leader, Matsushita even used to do picnics with his workforce [3]. Such are excellent examples of informal communication channels that may feed high quality information into the top of organizations, alongside the attention to the human side of information gathering, suggesting some relevant lessons to be taken from these founders of modern Japan in what corporate governance concerns. The European Business Review, 4d ago

In the face of these negative climate tipping points, we are now also seeing the shift to a low-carbon economy picking up speed. We are finally waking up to the challenges facing all our economies, and governments and businesses are doing more than ever to decarbonize and support a more sustainable kind of growth. However, we are still not moving fast enough. The key now will be getting a critical mass of leaders to drive their nations and industries towards critical positive tipping points in adoption of low-carbon solutions, in order to accelerate our transition. There was no single cause for this dismal record, and Parmet doesn’t try to assign one. Donald Trump was a contributor, certainly, with his administration’s garbled and often misleading messaging and his embrace of the pandemic as culture-war fodder. The country’s notorious lack of a social safety net added not only to the raw numbers but to the disparate outcomes between rich and poor, white and black; without paid sick leave, blue-collar workers often had no choice but to remain on the job with little protection from the virus. The political scientist Jason Blakely, in a recent issue of Harper’s, argued that the scientific establishment was partly to blame, having undermined its own authority and alienated large segments of the public by insisting that science had all the answers when so much, like school closings, struck ordinary people as open to question or at least in need of discussion. As the months passed and public discourse grew more toxic, it was not easy to remember that protecting a society’s health is, as Parmet puts it, “one of the reasons we have governments.”...The New York Review of Books, 4d ago

Readiness to learn, the third assumption, is closely tied to adults' life stages and social roles. Real-life changes or needs, such as job roles, family situations, or health issues, often trigger adult learning. Educators need to recognize and respond to these triggers by providing learning opportunities that are relevant and applicable to the current life situations of their learners. This approach ensures that learning is seen as a practical and beneficial endeavor, not just an academic exercise.Psychology Today, 4d ago

Australia, like most developed nations, is seemingly committed to pursue “decarbonisation” by way of an “Energy Transition” from fossil fuels to so-called renewables. This Energy Transition is supposed to deliver a Net Zero in anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions within a few decades. We are told that this transition will not only save the planet, but will deliver, inter alia, cheaper energy, massive job growth and economic prosperity. Irrespective of one’s views on whether (or to what extent) the planet does need saving, nothing could be further from the truth with regard to the economic consequences. This Energy Transition will inevitably lead to higher energy costs, massive job losses in the many manufacturing and other industries that cannot survive these higher costs, inevitable rampant inflation; and of course consequential social disorder. Being self-inflicted, this Energy Transition (and absent the widespread deployment of nuclear energy) is akin to euthanasing the national economy.Quadrant Online -, 20d ago
In robotics, researchers face challenges in using reinforcement learning (RL) to teach robots new skills, as these skills can be sensitive to changes in the environment and robot structure. Current methods need help generalizing to new combinations of robots and tasks and handling complex, real-world tasks due to architectural complexity and strong regularisation. To tackle this issue., Researchers from Duke University and the Air Force Research Laboratory introduced Policy Stitching (PS). Amid the fears about a robot takeover, one point is often overlooked: that it is us humans who are needed to help these machines function. In many cases, AI will rely on human backup in complex situations, and to provide human empathy when it is needed. Also, despite the misconception that automation and AI decreases career opportunities, it may actually prompt a huge spike in new jobs. According to the World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report, 97 million new jobs will be created by 2025 due to AI – far more than the number of jobs AI may replace.theHRDIRECTOR, 9d ago

PennWharton: “Earlier this year, the employment rate of prime working age women reached an all-time high, passing 75 percent for the first time in U.S. history. Defying widespread expectations that the COVID-19 pandemic would disproportionately harm the economic prospects of women, they have recovered faster than men and played a dominant role in the overall labor market recovery. In a forthcoming working paper, we review the evolution of prime age women’s employment over the last few decades and explain its recent rise. This brief summarizes and previews some of the findings from that ongoing work. We show that the current employment highs are a product of two long-term trends that predate the pandemic: 1) the rising share of women who are college graduates, and 2) a shrinking child penalty for college-educated mothers, who are increasingly likely to remain in the workforce after having a child. Despite the severe disruptions to labor markets, schooling, and childcare caused by the pandemic, these trends continued and even accelerated after 2020. In the full working paper, we link their resilience to the grand gender convergence in labor market outcomes, drawing on the work of Claudia Goldin, who was recently awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in economics. We present additional evidence from changes in the occupational mix of women’s employment, discuss the impact of parental leave, and study the dynamics of child penalties in detail.”...bespacific.com, 4d ago

But in the absence of being able to reach inter-institutional agreement on whether and what kind of policy to move forward with, these unilateral directives have become increasingly an important way for presidents to try to move the needle. So sometimes they do so to step in where Congress just is not able to act or won’t act. Sometimes they do so because they think that if they move forward first, that there could be other follow-up consequences that come from that. So for example, president Obama increased the minimum wage for federal contractors who work with the federal government. Now that applies to a fairly narrow set of firms and individuals. That’s not equivalent in any way to a federal increase in the minimum wage that would apply across the board. But I think that the administration’s thinking was that one, that by increasing it for some people might generate more demand and thus more pressure on Congress for increasing it for a larger share of the workforce.Niskanen Center - Improving Policy, Advancing Moderation, 4d ago

The competitive disadvantage stems from industries in areas with lax carbon regulations incurring lower environmental compliance costs, enabling them to produce goods and services more cost-effectively. In essence, while environmentally conscious policies benefit the planet, they present economic challenges for regions or industries committed to sustainability. This disparity may prompt a shift in economic activities as industries seek locations with less demanding environmental regulations, potentially impacting Indonesia’s economic vitality and job market adhering to strict carbon constraints. Furthermore, the condition may also trigger economic inefficiencies, as companies perpetuate a reliance on high-emission production methods.Modern Diplomacy, 4d ago

The jobs will range from engineers to technicians, and the count will likely increase, as experts estimate that every job created in advanced manufacturing spurs the creation of 2.5 jobs in support roles from other industry sectors.Though the company hails from New Zealand it plans to hire locally.Speaking before the council on Tuesday, Zabrieszach said all manufacturing for Riverside's shuttles and shuttles to be used elsewhere will take place in Riverside. The autonomous shuttles will sell for roughly $300,000, generating about $26,250 in sales tax per vehicle for Riverside, the city said.Ohmio has shuttles operating in New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, Luxembourg and New York, and the company is expanding into the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Finland. The Riverside facility will be close to the Southern California headquarters of the California Air Resources Board, which relocated to the city two years ago and is expected to spur additional vehicle-related research and development businesses.Ohmio said it's committed to collaborating with local universities, giving those schools an opportunity to include autonomous vehicle technology research, attract funding and help shape the future of the industry. The company will benefit from its proximity to UC Riverside and the school's Center for Environmental Research and Technology, as well as California Baptist University, La Sierra University and the Riverside Community College District.Ohmio also plans to collaborate with the Riverside Transit Agency for maintenance of its shuttles.Pros and consThe Alliance for Innovation says the use of autonomous vehicles will result in fewer crashes or fender benders, as they're programmed to maintain a safe and consistent distance between vehicles, which can also help reduce the number of stop-and-go waves that produce road congestion for no apparent reason. But the technology has also raised concerns.Researchers at UC Irvine's Department of Computer Science set up a course on the UCLA campus to test the reactions of driverless cars to ordinary objects being placed on the side of the road.Their study found that boxes, bicycles, trash cans and traffic cones can cause a driverless vehicle to halt abruptly, potentially creating a hazard and impacting the delivery of passengers and goods.© 2023 The Whittier Daily News, Calif. Understand that transformation barriers that impede green investments lie within infrastructure and human capital. Countries with poor electricity infrastructure that rely on fossil fuels, for instance, make investors wary they can handle more variable energy sources like solar or wind power. Moreover, there needs to be a concerted effort to develop more skilled labor to effectively install, maintain, and replace green energy equipment. A successfully coordinated employment plan could benefit investors and the planet, as well as workers—Deloitte’s Work toward net-zero report found that 300 million additional Green Collar jobs can be created by 2050 if appropriate action is taken.GlobalFinTechSeries, 5d ago
Generative AI chat applications have captured the public’s imagination and helped people understand what is possible, but there are still barriers that prevent people from using these solutions at work. Specifically, these chat applications do not know an organisation’s business, data, customers, operations, or employees. Additionally, these solutions were not initially built with the security and privacy features that organisations need for employees to safely use them in their day-to-day work. This has led to companies adding these features to their assistants after they were built, which does not work as well as incorporating security into the assistant’s fundamental design.technologymagazine.com, 5d ago
According to the ECB report, data suggests lower-skilled workers in the US aren’t as safe as they are in Europe, with American indicators suggesting AI “tends to reduce the number of low-skilled jobs.” The report’s authors contrast that outcome to the situation in France, where they argue there’s been a positive association between automation and increasing employment of unskilled industrial workers in recent years.CoinGenius, 5d ago
In Beltran de Heredia's opinion, the field in which we are most likely to see the first attempts to influence human behaviour through AI is that of work, more specifically occupational health. He argues that a number of intrusive technologies are currently in use. These include devices that monitor bus drivers to detect microsleep or electroencephalography (EEG) sensors used by employers to monitor employees' brainwaves for stress and attention levels while at work. "It's hard to predict the future but, if we don't restrict such intrusive technologies while they're still at the earliest stages of development, the most likely scenario is that they'll keep improving and spreading their tendrils in the name of productivity."...newswise.com, 5d ago
Another factor that can affect your business cyber security is the hybrid working model, which allows your employees to work from both the office and home. This can pose some challenges, such as ensuring consistent security policies across different locations and devices and protecting your data from unauthorized access. According to the study, hybrid working is seen as a security concern for 38% of SMEs, yet only 41% cover it as part of their current IT security training.SME News, 5d ago
Travelers are always looking to exert greater control over their experience, and that is extending to selection of individual attributes in the guestroom. This concept, referred to as Attribute-Based Selling, is still in its infancy in hospitality, but there are many ways for hotels to deliver on guests’ desire to control their stay. Modern hotel PMS technology can accommodate highly specialized guest packages without complicating the process for operators. Hoteliers who embrace the possibilities of ABS by offering more unique booking opportunities will open their property to a world of new revenue-generating possibilities—if their PMS can oversee the process.Hospitality Technology, 5d ago

Sustainable living encompasses various practices and conscious choices. It should include practices such as installing energy-efficient appliances in homes and offices, switching off appliances when not in use, increasing the set temperature in air conditioners for appropriate thermal comfort, and using natural daylight. Furthermore, embracing measures such as the use of public transport and carpooling can significantly decrease emissions related to personal commuting. Emissions that cannot be avoided can be offset by supporting carbon offset programmes. Further, by shifting to low-carbon products and technologies, individuals can create demand that can incentivise businesses to develop and provide sustainable alternatives. This, in turn, accelerates the transition to a net-zero carbon economy. The adoption of practices such as these aligns well with India’s Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) mission, which emphasises responsible consumption in harmony with nature. In this context, high-income earners, particularly in developed countries, must act promptly to ensure climate justice and collectively embrace low-carbon lifestyles for a fair and sustainable future.CEEW, 5d ago
In the words of Sierra Leone’s Labour Minister, the Hon. Mohamed Rahman Swaray: “The project educated the masses, which is crucial to the country’s development.” By actively engaging in peace and security initiatives, unions not only safeguard their members’ interests but also make a profound statement about their commitment to the holistic well-being of the workforce. The project has illustrated that unions can act as powerful catalysts for positive change by addressing the root causes of conflicts and insecurity, thereby fostering an environment conducive to economic growth and job preservation.Equal Times, 5d ago
...“The vulnerability surface of OT networks continues to grow, while OT environments continue to suffer from a severe lack of skilled staff to continuously patch and investigate issues, which can result in millions of dollars in lost revenue,” said Gary Southwell, vice president and general manager, ARIA Cybersecurity. “Today’s enterprise EDR solutions are therefore simply not fit for purpose for OT. These environments need a solution that shoulders all the work and stops whatever harm comes their way. Custom-built for OT environments, AZT PROTECT secures production infrastructure from even the most advanced cybersecurity attacks and intrusions, including those that have never been seen before. We are seeing strong interest in this novel approach from some of the largest critical infrastructure OT operators in the US.”...automation.com, 5d ago

What does this look like in practice? Consider, for example, the framework of an insurance company that invests in an intuitive website that allows for easy customization. Creating a channel for customizable coverage can build customer loyalty and lead to higher sales. Now suppose that customer is in a car accident. In that case, employees can easily access their data from a single source, providing faster and more accurate service, leading to a reduction in employee work and complexity. And because employees have the right tools to do their jobs, there’s higher satisfaction and lower turnover. Tracking investments and data throughout the process shows the ROI of the total experience and how one investment leads to further growth and an improved overall experience for everyone involved. The Drum, 10d ago
The workplace has drastically changed in recent years. The hybrid work environment has introduced new obstacles for managers: learning how to manage teams amidst asynchronous communication and less face-to-face collaboration. It’s often up to managers to learn how to coach, develop and lead high-performing teams. In hybrid environments, this pressure and complexity multiplies. They find it more difficult to connect with individual employees, provide meaningful and effective feedback, and have the difficult conversations that are sometimes necessary to reach team objectives. This not only frustrates managers, but also the employees that work with them. In one survey, 82% of U.S.-based employees reported that having a bad manager might lead them to quit their job. With hybrid and remote environments here to stay, it’s important to ensure managers can leverage modern technology tools that allow them to hone their management style and skills. For example, an AI-powered conversations tool can give managers the chance to test their approach to difficult conversations (e.g., poor performance) with a direct report and receive feedback in real-time to improve — so they are better prepared to navigate the nuances of remote work before they happen. In face of the reality of work today, AI-backed workplace technology has the potential to transform retention efforts, solve the soft skills gaps and increase managers’ potential. No matter the industry, business leaders adopting AI-infused work and learning tools will be one step ahead of the rest.Training Industry, 17d ago
Instead of merely amplifying digital prowess, it foregrounds the human need, ensuring that technological advancements are tailored to enhance, not overshadow, human potential. For many manufacturers, the leap from Industry 4.0 to 5.0 can seem intimidating, especially when they’re still working on perfecting 4.0 integrations. However, the right digitalization partner can make this transition smoother. Tools that provide seamless integration and persona-based apps ensure that every member of the manufacturing chain, from floor workers to top-level management, has access to contextual, timely information. This drives efficiency, productivity, and a cohesive approach to manufacturing challenges.Matics, 25d ago
The belief underlying this view is that consciousness is the intelligence shown by any sufficiently complex system. The corollary belief is that human consciousness is simply an outcome of information in the brain. And since AI will soon have near infinite power to process information, some form of Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) is likely to eclipse human intelligence. From this view, it follows that humans can expect to become inferior to AI, most jobs will be automated, and the vast powers of ASI could threaten humanity.CEOWORLD magazine, 27d ago
A solution to this issue is cloud-based, automated tools that can be easily transitioned into legacy infrastructure and deliver almost immediate results in streamlining workflows while reducing the risk of errors, fraud, data breaches and, ultimately, non-compliance. Cloud-based solutions provide employees with access to the software they need to work regardless of location; however, it is vital that the right platforms are implemented so that employees can easily access essential systems without compromising information security.IT Brief Australia, 11d ago
New changes in hiring practices that will place more emphasis on seeking out candidates who possess the talent and skills required for certain roles, as opposed to the level of college one possesses or even age will become a part of the industry’s response to these changes. This means there will continue to be increased investment in upskilling and training, in particular around generative AI and talents that will be in demand due to an inevitable AI-driven economy.Digital Agency Network, 28d ago

The emergence of generative AI has introduced further opportunities to apply AI to security priorities. Security operations (SecOps) is a particularly fertile ground for innovation. Since attackers seek to evade detection, security analysts must correlate evidence of suspicious activity across a staggering volume of inputs. They must quickly prioritize identifiable threats in this data for response, making the constantly shifting playing field between attacker and defender a race against not only innovation but time, given that attacks can have an impact within minutes. Security analytics and SecOps tools are purpose-built to enable security teams to detect and respond to threats with greater agility, but the ability of generative AI to comb through such volumes of data, extract valuable insight, and present it in easily consumable human terms should help alleviate this load. Early applications of generative AI in this context show promise for enabling analysts — often limited in number relative to the challenges they face — to spend less time on data collection, correlation and triage, and to focus instead where they can be most effective. Generative AI can also be useful in finding and presenting relevant insights to less experienced analysts, helping them build expertise as they grow in the field (thus augmenting their productivity, rather than replacing them) — an option that could prove useful in helping organizations counter the enduring challenges of sourcing and retaining cybersecurity skills.spglobal.com, 5d ago
The benefits of spending less time together aren’t a sufficient reason to stop working at offices. There are many benefits to in-person experiences—including the opportunity to be more sensitive, and responsible ways of interacting with each other. We don’t want to create a reality where we must have obstacles to bad behavior as opposed to holding people accountable for their decisions. That would be like suggesting we never use the camera on Zoom calls because it would reduce racial bias. However, there is some evidence that remote work has helped improve the office environment—by taking away the office. The interesting question might be: Reducing the opportunity for bad behavior could create a long-term shift, even if and when opportunities arise, it may happen less often. Could this new norm change old habits? We won’t know for some time the full effects of working in a new way. It simply takes time to see the long-term impact. In the meantime, it might be a welcome, if unplanned, relief for many employees. If we actually learn and grow from this experience permanently, we could meaningfully change the workplace in ways we never anticipated.Psychology Today, 5d ago

We also have demographic issues as everybody else – our company is more than 80 years old, so generational differences in expectations and ideas will impact their execution. At the end of the day, it’s considering all these elements together that will help address this gap. We’ve had mentorship programs implemented in the last 2–3 years on the technician side of things, fostering young talent to share technical knowledge. On the other hand, we also want to motivate younger generations to help older generations of employees with new technologies and ideas. It’s a good start, but we’re still working on it. For example, we’re working to push digitalisation in many ways – AI, digital twins, IoT in industrial setting, Large Language Models such as ChatGPT etc. This comes with its own issues such as cybersecurity but these are all activities that require their own set of skills. Though it’s a learning process and we’re prototyping more and more in our organisation, there’s a large openness to these new ideas among our teams...CPHI Online, 18d ago
Finding patterns of any sort, in everything from crime to waste, fraud to abuse, occurs infrequently and often involves legions of inspectors. Regulators take months to painstakingly look through compliance forms, unable to process a request based on its own distinctive characteristics. Field workers equipped with AI could quickly access the information they need to make a judgment about the cause of a problem or offer a solution to help residents seeking assistance. These new technologies allow workers to quickly review massive amounts of data that are already in city government and find patterns, make predictions, and identify norms in response to well framed inquiries.Fast Company, 17d ago
