new Not only will innovation stimulate substantial growth and create new markets, we believe it also will disrupt sectors which historically have stoked high inflation. We believe that global oil demand is likely to peak within the next few years as electric vehicles begin to scale and as autonomous electric taxi networks account for an increasing share of miles traveled. DNA sequencing will introduce science to health care decision-making in a way never before possible, minimizing the guess work and eliminating waste. At the same time, robots will serve not only as an antidote to labor shortages that are cropping up in the US, Japan, China, and elsewhere, but also should increase productivity, one of the most powerful forces against inflation.Ark Invest, 8h ago
new Trial findings suggest that formulating diets with an optimal distribution of particle sizes may nurture gut development, help piglets cope with gut health disorders and reduce incidence of diarrhoea. As coarser elements in feed slow the rate of feed passage, this may grant regulatory mechanisms in the GIT adequate time to function. Including more coarse particles may also support piglet resilience in health-challenged environments without reducing performance. Findings from feeding trials have informed an enhanced Milkiwean Vital Start feeding programme. Tailored for use in facilities with potential for heath challenges, the augmented diet includes more coarsely ground feed particles to better support piglet performance. Feeding a diet with an optimal distribution of particle sizes can help support piglet performance and gut health in challenged conditions.Pig Progress, 14h ago
new As the global population, which already surpassed eight billion in November last year, continues to rise, with over half of it residing in urban areas and projected to reach 70 per cent by 2050, more efforts and tangible actions are required to keep the impact on the natural environment as low as possible. These actions are necessary at all levels — government, private sector, as well as individual levels. That’s the reason it’s crucial to step up our efforts and also create more awareness of how we can effectively contribute to global climate action and cultivate a sense of responsibility among everyone to do their bit for the survival of our only Earth and reduce the severity of climate change on our communities and societies, both present and future.Khaleej Times, 18h ago

new In a country where education plays a central role in the political, socio-economic milieu, it is only natural, even proper that debates thrive, as it is doing in Nigeria, about the cost of education vis-à-vis educational opportunities to the average citizen. Balancing access and cost of tertiary education has become an issue that needs proper interrogation and rethinking more so as harsh economic conditions have precluded the academic environment from the serenity and predictability it used to enjoy. This issue has been compounded with the challenges of running a proper curriculum. The salient question that recurs is whether or not education should be free; and to what extent? Who bears the cost?...The Guardian Nigeria News - Nigeria and World News, 21h ago
new Establishing a yearly commemorative day for health promotion is an important step towards addressing public health challenges in Nigeria. It allows for a dedicated day where individuals, government agencies, non-profit organisations, and other stakeholders can come together to promote healthy lifestyles, educate the public about prevailing health issues, and advocate for policies and actions that improve the overall health of Nigerians. The Guardian Nigeria News - Nigeria and World News, 1d ago

new For all of the bravado of AI, before we become too dazzled or dismayed (depending on which side of this issue you reside), at AI’s potential impact on projects, it is worthwhile to sit back with a skeptical bird’s eye view. After all, as we humans evolved throughout the information age of the mid to late twentieth century, AI can just be considered the latest development in a long series of technological advances driven by the engine of human information input. Even if every one of the improvements stated above are tangible, how well does it translate to the ultimate outcome? Organizations around the globe have been trying to digitalize and computerize, some as early as the 1960s and 1970s. Digitization and computerization promised a revolution in productivity through automation, streamlining, and making humans redundant. But the road to a more significant productivity boost has been arduous at best. One of the primary reasons is captured in the Theory of Constraints (TOC) developed by Eliyahu M. Goldratt, an Israeli physicist turned business management guru. In his landmark book The Goal, which sold over 6 million copies, he explains the importance of focusing on the right constraints to improve the overall system. For projects, the constraints are generally not within the technology and tools, but within humans.Healthcare Business Today, 1d ago
new Their education system is good but again what is lacking is implementation. Not all schools are good. In fact according to their own stats some of the best schools are now good schools and average ones have turned out to be bad. Any socialist economy suffers from funding because of the nature of how money is handled. But Canada has gotten worse. Some big EU economies have somehow managed to weather the bad effects of socialism. Hard to predict how things will look like in future. I guess US will still remain the strongest and the greatest but their arm twisting strength will reduce. China will continue to grow and thrive if they stop their aggressive control on capitalism. India will remain a bright spot for a few more years. Unless they reform law and order, agriculture and their labor system they will be stuck in the “bright spot” segment. I don’t have much hopes on EU because of the population decline and their stupid immigration policies (though slightly better than Canada). Japan also has an aging population with negative population growth. Their society is also not welcoming to immigrants. So no hopes there. Interesting times. The world has enjoyed tremendous growth since WW2. I guess ours and our children’s generation will see some chaos before things settle again.Blind, 1d ago
new The now-infamous report that bears his moniker documents that Kissinger also acted with impunity in the implementation of a depopulation programme in African and other vulnerable countries. This programme aimed to achieve the inverse outcome of USA enrichment. As stated in the Kissinger report, “The US economy will require large and increasing amounts of minerals from abroad, especially from less developed countries. That fact gives the US enhanced interest in the political, economic, and social stability of the supplying countries. Wherever a lessening of population pressures through reduced birth rates can increase the prospects for such stability, population policy becomes relevant to resource supplies and to the economic interests of the United States.”...jamaica-gleaner.com, 1d ago

Manufacturers in the home accessories market are continuously developing products with enhanced functionality and features to remain competitive. Despite developing products with higher added value, the prices for the products have collapsed and thus, remained stagnant at a lower level for several years. The decrease in price was due to the pressure of competition from countries with low manufacturing costs. Manufacturers are also facing pressure related to margins owing to fierce competition in the Japan home accessories market. This price fall is forcing companies to develop innovative products. This decrease in price trend of home accessories is encouraging customers to purchase the products, which in turn can drive the Japan home accessories market. Reducing prices of home accessories positively impact the Japan home accessories market growth. According to the United Nations, a large part of the world is currently undergoing urbanization. Nearly 54.8% of the world’s population presently lives in urban areas. Growth in urbanization has resulted in the change in lifestyle of individuals. Increase in number of nuclear families also boosts the demand for home accessories. High price and remarkable popularity of home accessories brands have led to the advent of counterfeit brands. Counterfeit brands are generally prevalent in areas where consumers are highly price-sensitive. This factor restricts the sale of the existing original home Accessories brands in the Japan market. On the contrary, development of durable, energy-efficient home accessories at economic price is anticipated to increase the rate of penetration among low- and middle-income groups.EIN Presswire, 16d ago

The upshot is that many parents – and speaking from experience, mostly mothers – are working less or dropping out of the workforce entirely, as well as having fewer children. That is terrible for gender equality and inimical to the growth this country so desperately needs. But perhaps more invidious is the problems this is storing up for the next generation. Britain’s declining birth rates mean that our children will be paying for the pensions and healthcare of an increasingly aged and infirm population. While other factors are undoubtedly contributing to lower birth rates, most notably the housing crisis, the demographic time bomb facing us can in part be attributed to the simple fact that people just cannot afford to have the number of children they might like. A recent essay in Works in Progress magazine showed that one of the main reasons for the postwar Baby Boom was that it became much cheaper to raise your family, and to afford a house large enough in which to do so. In Britain today, the opposite is the case.CapX, 3d ago
The major reason for the present concern includes innovations through biotechnology for offering solutions to current challenges that the world faces, from feeding and fuelling a growing population, addressing a worldwide epidemic of chronic diseases etc. We must not forget that developing a sustainable bio-based economy that uses eco-efficient bioprocesses and renewable bioresources is one of the key strategic challenges for the 21st century. Furthermore, biotechnology for inclusive and sustainable industrial development can contribute to our responsibilities towards the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Industry leaders, entrepreneurs and their start-ups must watch this growing industry closely.CEOWORLD magazine, 28d ago
Despite this need, the funding landscape is currently characterized by a significant shortfall in promised funds from developed nations and a reliance on loan-based financing, which exacerbates the debt burden of vulnerable countries. The cost of financing can be up to seven times higher in emerging and developing economies compared with the United States and Europe. This disparity makes the clean energy transition for developing countries much more difficult as renewable energy development has zero on-going fuel costs but requires high up-front capital costs.Against this backdrop, initiatives like the Bridgetown Agenda call for a radical transformation of the global financial system to ensure fair and adequate support for those most in need of building resilience and transitioning to clean energy.Climate Nexus, 12d ago
If populations are relatively isolated and adaptation occurs primarily via local selective sweeps, then we expect that most adaptive fixations will happen locally in individual populations rather than across the entire species range. This pattern should become even stronger if alleles experience negative pleiotropy, such that they are only adaptive in one environment and deleterious in others, further inhibiting the ability of such alleles to fix rangewide. If adaptation via sweeps is commonly restricted to individual populations, using a broad geographic sample to represent a population could underestimate the number of adaptive substitutions that occur (Gossmann et al. 2010). To test this, we estimated the proportion of mutations fixed by adaptive evolution (α) (Smith and Eyre-Walker 2002) across all of our populations and the rangewide samples for both subspecies. We estimated α jointly among all populations by fitting a non-linear mixed-effect model based on the asymptotic McDonald–Kreitman test (Messer and Petrov 2013). Across populations, α varied between 0.097 (teosinte San Lorenzo) and 0.282 (teosinte Palmar Chico), with more variation among teosinte populations (Figure 3). In contrast to our expectations, rangewide estimates of α were com-mensurate with individual populations. We additionally evaluated estimates of α for specific mutation types, which has been shown to be lower at sites mutating from A/T to G/C, due to the effects of GC-biased gene conversion in Arabidopsis (Hämälä and Tiffin 2020). While we do find some evidence that α predictions varied by mutation type (see Figure S2, Supplement III), the patterns are the opposite of that found in Arabidopsis, perhaps because of the increased level of methylation in maize and the higher mutation rate at methylated cytosines. Even after accounting for differences among mutation types, rangewide values remained commensurate with that of the populations.elifesciences.org, 13d ago

new While the number of houses isn't fixed, neither is the number of people using those houses. Again, related to a metrics we could control - immigration and birth rates - but intentionally or not, don't. Aside from birth rates being low due to the issue of increasing house prices due to intentionally lowered interest rates causing people to delay/reduce having children, an argument could also be made that one of the major reasons the west needs young immigrants is the rise in birth control/abortions - NZ alone has killed more than half a million future citizens in the name of convenience. (I realize it's a moral decision, but it has economic implications).interest.co.nz, 1d ago
new Instead, the recent surge in inflation inequality stems from more innocuous roots. Firms pass rising upstream costs on to retail prices at similar absolute rates for both low- and high-end products. However, when price changes are measured in percentages, the increases appear disproportionately large for low-end products. This pattern has real consequences for consumers across the income distribution, since rising input prices can lead the cost of a typical shopping basket for a low-income household to grow faster than the cost of a high-income household’s shopping basket. From 2020–2023, these differences add up to a substantial inflation gap for low- and high-income households.CEPR, 1d ago
new Paradoxically, when women meet men's fantasies by being more open about their sexual desires, men can experience women's open expression of desire as a demand rather than an invitation, a command to perform, or to please her. History is full of examples of men viewing women's sexuality as dangerous. Delilah brought down Sampson by seducing him, the Sirens brought Odysseus to near ruin with their seductive cries, and Eve brought about humanity's fall by seducing Adam to eat the apple. Even today, athletes are superstitious about having sex before a big match, believing it drains some of the power they need to perform. Not surprisingly, these dynamics often show up as inhibited sexual desire in men. In one study, 15% of men in long-term partnerships reported they had lost almost all interest in sex for a period of three months or longer in the past year. This is not about aging; the highest rate was in men aged 35 to 44.Psychology Today, 1d ago
new California’s state budget has fluctuated wildly in the past several years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, California saw the largest surpluses in state history, including an unprecedented $31 billion surplus in 2022-2023. However a weakening economy, a massive loss of the state population and companies moving out of state, delayed tax changes and numerous other factors led to a severe deficit the next year. An initial deficit of $25 billion, which was later changed in May to $31.5 billion, rocked the state. While the state managed to continue on with a reduced budget, experts warned that the situation would likely grow worse with continued tax shortcomings.California Political Review, 1d ago
new Under the current international financial architecture, the exploitative dynamics that have plagued poor communities and the Global South during the colonial era persist to this day. Private creditors are taking advantage of low-income countries that rely heavily on external financing to address their development requirements. They argue against debt forgiveness, asserting that it would damage these countries’ reputation with investors and restrict their access to capital markets. However, the current financial system is predominantly configured to uphold the structural power of creditors, prioritizing their interests over those of borrowing nations in the Global South. Consequently, these nations are increasingly at risk of becoming debt colonies, trapped in a cycle of perpetual indebtedness.Modern Diplomacy, 2d ago
new Indeed, while fearmongering around immigration is surely a factor behind the rise of the far right in Europe, economic issues such as declining standards of living and economic inequality may in fact be the key driver behind the spread of anti-immigration sentiments. The European Union integration project has long been seen by large segments of the continent’s citizenry as undermining national sovereignty and strengthening neoliberal economic policies harmful to the working class. Still, we can’t ignore the role racism and Islamophobia have played, as it is specifically migration flows from non-European countries that have been touted as a threat, and none more so than Muslim migration. The unjustified fear among those who are calling for tougher immigration laws, as many Dutch citizens have been doing over the years, is of Islam. The problem, for them, is that the immigrants are Muslim, not that they are immigrants. Europe welcomed Ukrainian refugees. But as political scientist Lamis Abdelaaty said, “Europeans see Ukrainians as White and Christian, similar to the way that many in European countries see themselves.”...Truthout, 2d ago

The number of U.S. children living in households with extended families has greatly increased in the last 4 decades. This demographic shift calls for a reevaluation of the impact of household size on children’s development. Household density (HHD), measured as the ratio of people to bedrooms in a home, has been shown to negatively relate to children’s language. Here, we propose that while greater HHD may result in poorer language abilities, more adults in relation to the number of children in the home may have a positive impact on children’s language. To test this hypothesis, we studied relations between HHD and adult-to-child ratio with children’s vocabulary scores, as well as whether maternal education and household chaos accounted for these associations. Participants included families from a range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds (N = 275; Mage = 10.85; 51% female; 51% Hispanic; annual income range less than $10,000–over $100,000). In general, higher HHD was related to lower child vocabulary scores. Conversely, higher adult-to-child ratio was related to higher child vocabulary and lower household chaos. These patterns were primarily driven by effects in Hispanic families. Our results suggest that a reevaluation of household size is needed, as more adults in the home can be protective for children’s language development in larger families, an effect that may vary by culture.nationalaffairs.com, 15d ago
This global awareness campaign asks diners and hospitality businesses around the world a crucial question – 'How can we eat differently today to build a better tomorrow?'. #EatForTomorrow shares inspirational stories and future-proofing innovative solutions from restaurants and businesses who are already impacting the future of our food systems. In Hong Kong, The Sustainable Restaurant Association has joined forces with five change-making organisations, businesses and spokespeople to tell the story of how they are impacting the future of food. The campaign features Chef Vicky Lau, founder of Michelin Green-Starred restaurant Mora and Two-Michelin-Starred restaurant Tate Dining Room, Zero Foodprint Asia in collaboration with Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, Rooftop Republic in collaboration with Something Wild restaurant and Farmacy in collaboration with Le Meridien Cyberport. The campaign looks at the future of food through four lenses: 'A Better Future for Farming', 'Preserving Biodiversity', 'Eating More Plants' and 'Sourcing Sustainable Seafood'. Sharing 20 incredible stories from Hong Kong, Singapore, UK & UAE encouraging more people, policy makers and businesses to get on board with protecting our food systems for the future. By 2050, the global population is projected to reach 9.7 billion.* The challenge we face now is building a resilient food system for the future, finding clever, sustainable ways to increase, fortify and rebalance food production and distribution in ways that don't harm the environment or exacerbate the climate crisis. With decisive action, there is no doubt that we can play a role in feeding the growing global population. The good news is that the world is full of visionaries: farmers, entrepreneurs, chefs and activists who are already busy building a food system that works in tandem with nature, considers the climate, inspires consumers and shows the way forward. Transforming food systems is a complex task – but changing our eating habits now is the first step forward. The four key themes of the campaign distil down the actions that we can take to best impact the system: A Better Future for Farming: How can we feed a growing population while also safeguarding and nourishing the natural environment? The journey begins in the fields, where the transformation of farming is crucial for the health of our planet. Sharing how farmers are offering solutions like regenerative, vertical and urban farming to feed the planet and restore the environment. Taking a closer look at regenerative farming, a practice that puts nature first by mimicking natural cycles, building healthy soil, restoring biodiversity and sequestering carbon. In fact, the World Economic Forum estimates that greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture could be 6% lower each year by 2030 if even one-fifth of farmers adopted "climate-smart" agriculture such as regenerative farming. In Hong Kong, we will tell the story of Zero Foodprint Asia and their partnership with a farm in the Northern Territories. Zero Foodprint Asia (ZFPA) is a registered charitable organization in Hong Kong, mobilizing the food world around agricultural climate solutions by 'closing the loop' within Asia's food and hospitality sector. Through its Restore Fund grant program, ZFPA enables smallholder farmers to grow food alongside nature-positive, biodiverse ways; while allowing chefs, restaurant owners and diners to contribute to preserving indigenous cultivation practices, improving soil health, and restoring our climate. Urban farming is a clever approach that brings food production into cities. Not only does this reduce food miles and transportation costs, but it can also improve local air quality, make better use of urban space and bring economic and social benefits to the surrounding communities. We delve into a story on urban farming with Hong Kong's Rooftop Republic, highlighting their thriving micro-greens farm at Something Wild. Plus, looking at the work Farmacy do with many restaurants and hotels in the city. Preserving Biodiversity: Of the nearly 300,000 known edible species across the planet, only 150-200 are eaten by humans; nearly 60% of all human calories from plants come from just three sources. We need to diversify our diets to protect species from extinction, and to reduce the need for intensive farming. To address this, we're celebrating provenance and honouring our food heritage, speaking to chefs who are increasing biodiversity through initiatives like seed saving, the revival of ancient grains, rearing heritage breeds and respecting indigenous food practices. In Hong Kong we take a look at Lai Chi Wo community and farm. Nestled in the northeast New Territories of Hong Kong, Lai Chi Wo is one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved Hakka walled villages, set in an area of great natural beauty and rich biodiversity. For centuries, the indigenous community here worked in tandem with the natural surroundings of Lai Chi Wo, using traditional agricultural practices and food systems. Working with the locals, Centre for Civil Society and Governance at The University of Hong Kong initiated the village revitalisation and resumed the traditional practices with sustainable farming approach that nourishes the soils, protect biodiversity and produce nutrient-rich crops for the villagers. Eating More Plants: The narrative will centre around how consumers can make a real difference simply by embracing a shift towards more plant-focused eating. Discover the diversity and benefits of nutritious veggies, as well as looking at plant-based meat substitutes and alternative protein sources. We tell the story of Vicky Lau and her restaurant Mora where the entire menu is based around tofu. Vicky Lau is an acclaimed chef, and the founder and chef-proprietor of Mora restaurant, which is nestled into the historic street of Upper Lascar Row. The restaurant's hyper-seasonal menu is defined by the versatility of soy - a pinnacle ingredient that is pillar to Asian culinary tradition. Stemming from Chef Vicky Lau's French x Chinese cooking roots, Mora's dishes are categorised by texture with recipes that highlight precious ingredients through the manipulation of soy. Sustainable Seafood: Highlighting improvements in how we source seafood to better protect our marine environment, preserve biodiversity and maintain the health of our oceans. Discovering what restaurants should look for in seafood suppliers and how diners can help. We will showcase this in several ways, including delving into the work at Cornwall's environmentally positive Westcountry Mussels, a supplier to many Food Made Good accredited restaurants, and the UAE's Dibba Bay Oysters. Juliane Caillouette Noble, Managing Director of The SRA, said: "Climate change and food insecurity means we are faced with a big-picture challenge: how can we build a resilient food system for the future, finding clever, sustainable ways to increase food production in ways that don't harm the environment or exacerbate the climate crisis? To protect tomorrow's resources, we need to make a shift in what we eat, where it comes from and how it is produced. Food choices matter – and farmers, fishers, suppliers, chefs, diners and citizens all over the world have a role to play in driving change for a better food future. There is no better moment: this is a pivotal time to build momentum for this discussion and eat our way to a better future." At some point, policymakers will surely have to face up to what is coming down the track and attempt to change course. That process is never going to be easy, but the longer we leave it, the harder it will get. Radical reform of pensions, social care, and the health service is essential. But we should not just focus on the public spending side of things. An all-encompassing programme of economic liberalisation could, if it succeeded in raising the growth rate, make the burdens of an ageing population much easier to bear. Similarly, if we can help people to have more children today, tomorrow’s old-age dependency ratio will start to look a lot more manageable.CapX, 13d ago

new As with many things at the international level, progress in one area is often simultaneous with a perceived lack of progress in others. Despite efforts of the United Nations to push for more global gender equality, feminist scholars such as Tickner (2005) have argued that women suffer from discrimination that means they are still not being taken seriously at both an institutional and grassroots level. And, it is hard to read the case of Saudi Arabia vis-à-vis the United Nations as evidence of this changing. Discrimination and inequality for women remains, particularly in states that may be suffering from poverty, war or deprivation. And, when António Guterres became UN Secretary General in 2017 he continued an unbroken run of male leadership going back to the founding of the organization in 1945. As a result, and despite progress, feminists remain watchful over the United Nations and critical of its ability to achieve the results needed. A continued negative gendered perspective within the functioning of the organisation serves to slow or hinder structural change for women around the world. The critique seems to have caught on and Guterres (2020) has made commitments towards using his leadership to make this ‘the century of women’s equality’.E-International Relations, 2d ago
new Exhibit A is Amara’s law, named for scientist, researcher and former President of the Institute for the Future Roy Amara. He is best known for saying, “We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.” Boy howdy, does that ever apply to digital technologies in general and artificial intelligence specifically. AI may change the world — curing cancer, reversing climate change or taking all our jobs while creating a bunch more new ones — but mostly in the outbound years and decades. In the near term, it creates shadows for us to worry about, plan around and get distracted by even as we experiment and put it to work.In many respects, GenAI represents a victory lap for Moore’s law, based on Intel co-founder Gordon Moore’s formulation about the exponential growth of computational prowess. Originally coined in 1965 around the doubling of transistors on microchips every couple of years, it bumped up against the physical limits of silicon-based technologies. As AI models grow massively in size, from millions to billions and even trillions of parameters, the underlying hardware continues to keep pace even as margins narrow. Chip maker Nvidia, with its combination of advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) and tensor processing units (TPUs) that are optimized for AI tasks, reaches beyond transistor density in pushing the upward limits in the exponential increase in computational power. Not far behind, but perhaps in a supporting role, is Metcalfe’s law. Named for Ethernet inventor Robert Metcalfe, it suggests that the value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of its users. When the campaign for digital government was young, broadband penetration reached 51 percent — giving advocates the opportunity to claim that government could then serve a “digital majority.” As of last year, that number has reached 90 percent. The stakes are high for the remaining 10 percent, often characterized as underserved communities including low-income and racialized populations along with people who have chosen not to engage in a connected world. By extension of Metcalfe’s law, more user interactions contribute to AI’s knowledge, which relies on iterative feedback for fine-tuning and improvement. The absence of marginalized voices is deafening to generative models. They cannot be trained with what isn’t there, increasing the risk of unconscious bias and the skewing of results.GovTech, 2d ago
new ANDRÉS EFREN MONTALVO SOSA (Ecuador), Security Council President for December, spoke in his national capacity to express regret regarding the violent combats that were impacting civilian population and resulting in millions fleeing violence. He also expressed concern about reports of events that could constitute crimes against humanity. Calling on all parties to immediately cease hostilities and respect human rights and international humanitarian law, he stressed: “We believe that the recently adopted resolution correctly addresses this alarming situation, establishing regular reports to the Council on the threats to international peace and security arising from the situation in Sudan, as well as the efforts deployed by the UN.” This mechanism is fundamental for the Council to be able to fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to it. He also welcomed the appointment of Ramtane Lamamra and expressed his gratitude to all the UN staff who have worked tirelessly and selflessly in recent years in Sudan.ReliefWeb, 2d ago
new At the same time, the growth of green industries can result in other environmental harms. Despite aiming to generate employment and value through the production of transition minerals, the industrialisation strategies of several Global South countries tend to entrench extractive practices. For example, Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile – South America’s “lithium triangle” – are seeking to capture various stages of the lithium supply chain, from mineral extraction to processing to battery assembly. But the growth of this industry threatens to deplete water supplies, degrade soil, and disrupt habitats, often in zones inhabited by indigenous Andean peoples. Similarly, the production of semiconductors, which are at the heart of clean tech, is energy-, water-, and land-intensive and releases perfluorocarbons and other potent greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.Eco-Business, 2d ago
new So yes, the vast majority of humanity just want the US to go away and leave them to manage their own affairs. The problem with abusive narcissists is that they can turn into “family destroyers”, wiping out the rest of the family because they just "know" that the family (i.e. humanity) cannot survive without them. If they are to go away, then so must humanity. When those wanting a faster rate of change complain about the careful and patient diplomacy and actions of Russia, Iran and China, they must remember the dangerous lunatic that those nations are dealing with; one that can make humanity disappear with it if it so decides, in a global murder suicide. Anyone looking at the current psychopathic thrashings of the Israeli state must hold no flights of fancy about a US where a quarter of the population still believe in a heretical bible Armageddon fantasy, and its elite are wedded to their global dominance. Such lunatics have to be carefully managed and slowly subdued in order to reduce the possibilities of self-destructive and psychopathic rage-induced paroxysms. The Greanville Post, 2d ago
new Economic historians ascribe this growing demand for human capital to the transition from an agricultural economy to a highly skilled manufacturing and services-based economy, first in western societies and then globally. Empirical evidence supports the idea that this transition has caused birth rates to slow down. For instance, analysis of individual returns from the 1911 Irish census suggest that a child remaining in school between the ages of 14 and 16 caused an up to 27% reduction in fertility.phys.org, 2d ago

In the past, we often thought about national security in very narrow terms—the immediate projection of “hard” power (military force). But in today’s conditions, hard power is necessary but insufficient if adversaries can shut off energy access and disrupt communications or if disease weakens the population and brings the economy to a standstill. Moreover, as Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has noted, a lack of industrial capacity—and spiraling crises around the world—are producing shortfalls in the military assistance Ukraine has relied upon to thwart the Russian invasion. Beyond the question of industrial capacity, energy policy, and technology policy are both important components of national security policy—and connect to the domestic imperative that the State Department’s special coordinator for global infrastructure Helaina Matza recognizes must be behind any national security initiative: “grow our own economy [and] employ our own people.”...The National Interest, 14d ago
I am not against spatial planning that provides some direction to land use. That could include some protection of the very best elite soils, special character areas, flooding and other disaster-prone areas, etc. But spatial planning should not be an all-encompassing rigid belt around cities preventing any change in land-use. Also, spatial planning shouldn't just be a negative restrictive thing. The main rationale for spatial planning is about providing a spatial strategy for the future provision of infrastructure corridors so that cities can logically cope with demand if and when it occurs - NZ cities for instance should have contingency plans for a doubling or tripling of population. Copenhagen's still in use 1947 finger model for instance has fingers of urban development along rail corridors and the gaps between the fingers are protected green spaces - this has provided the strategy for a doubling in the size of the city.interest.co.nz, 20d ago
Industrial ammonia fertilizer production has played a key role in the growth of the human population, where it is thought that ~50% of the nitrogen found in our bodies originates from the Haber-Bosch process. Dinitrogen is reacted with molecular hydrogen over K-promoted Fe catalyst beds in a process that is highly efficient (atom efficiency), but which also results in the consumption of 1-2% of global energy and a carbon footprint greater than that of global aviation. In nature, a single class of metalloenzymes named nitrogenases employs Fe-containing metal centers to catalyze the fixation of dinitrogen to ammonia under ambient conditions, achieving up to 75% selectivity. However, many questions remain surrounding nitrogenase’s catalytic mechanism and multiple limitations must be surmounted to exploit this enzyme in new biotechnologies for ammonia production. This seminar will present our recent efforts ultimately aimed at interfacing nitrogenases with electrodes where renewable electrical energy could drive ammonia production, namely (i) understanding why nitrogenase has ~C2 symmetry and (ii) whether we can produce this complex metalloenzyme in biotechnologically malleable organisms.epfl.ch, 26d ago
Along with these shifts, the post-pandemic economy has jumpstarted other economies by creating new opportunities. For example, in the case of car dealerships, more business owners are meeting their private and business clients where they are at either by delivery, or even by moving into the areas that experienced significant population increases. In addition, with conferences and conventions coming back to pre-pandemic levels, more companies recognize the need for showcasing their vehicles on site; this can also include, but is not limited to, car rentals planning for increased demands in specific regions for crowd-attracting events. Simultaneously, more specialists in the trucking industry are experiencing their own “freight recession,” leading to more drivers looking for new opportunities in their sector to keep pace with current realities.Global Trade Magazine, 19d ago
Earth for All can trace its origins to The Club of Rome commissioned report The Limits to Growth published 50 years ago. Back then scientists used early computer models to show that Earth’s finite resources would eventually buckle under the weight of material consumption. Food production would fall, followed by a precipitous fall in population. Many people were shocked by the conclusion that pushing beyond the limits of the planet could lead to collapse. Over the last 50 years the world has followed the report’s worst-case scenario and we are beginning to see deep fractures in the Earth system and within societies. With Earth for All we could have explored more collapse scenarios, but we believe our future will be built on economic optimism not despair.igor-chudov.com, 13d ago
To eradicate homelessness, we must close the doors that lead into homelessness — doors from criminal justice systems that drop people back into society with no housing; from foster-care systems that fail to set kids up for success when they age out; from health-care systems that discharge people into homelessness; and from housing systems that don’t build or preserve enough homes that working people can afford. The pandemic showed us the power of prevention. When COVID-19 hit, Congress, states and communities banned evictions, dedicated funding for emergency rental assistance, expanded unemployment insurance and the Child Tax Credit, and deployed temporary cash assistance to low- and middle-income Americans. These policies prevented millions of evictions, cut poverty in half and prevented what would otherwise have been a massive surge in homelessness. Those successes are informing some promising local efforts to end homelessness. Santa Clara County, Calif., for example, has something few communities have but all need: a comprehensive, well-designed homelessness prevention system. With the help of more than a dozen nonprofits, the system offers temporary financial assistance, legal aid and other services to low-income people at risk of losing their homes. According to a recent study by Notre Dame researchers, people offered temporary financial assistance were 81 percent less likely to experience homelessness within six months and 73 percent less likely within 12 months of enrolling in Santa Clara County’s homelessness prevention system. Prevention also pays off — literally: The study concluded that for every $1 spent on temporary financial assistance, the community gets $2.47 back in benefits.Governing, 19d ago

new Bed-and-breakfasts, a forerunner of today’s short-term rentals, always have had a place in the hospitality sector. The market was intended for family-run operators, researchers and industry experts told Stateline. But the rise of home-sharing platforms has led to a “hotelization” of residential neighborhoods, and with that, concerns and calls from residents for more regulation.A 2019 Economic Policy Institute study concluded that the economic harm Airbnb caused to long-term renters by reducing the housing supply and raising prices outweighed the benefits to travelers and property owners.State lawmakers elsewhere continue to wrestle with the issue. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, has endorsed efforts to tax short-term rentals the same as hotels. A bill is up for consideration in 2024. A measure in Arkansas to prohibit cities from enacting regulations on short-term rentals failed; a bill in Hawaii that would have allowed any county to phase out legal short-term rentals died in committee. In past years, though, some state legislatures have protected Airbnb and property owners by forbidding certain city or county regulations. Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Nebraska and Tennessee prohibit local governments from banning short-term rentals altogether. The impact of Arizona’s 2016 law, according to Tom Savage, legislative director for the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, is an influx of short-term rentals in the state’s tourism communities. Some are run by investment companies rather than mom-and-pops.“This issue strains available housing stock and forces residents to nearby communities to find affordable housing,” Savage said.In three California cities with a large share of short-term rentals — Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego — home-sharing ordinances have prohibited any listing of a short-term rental without a valid home-sharing registration number and have reduced the duration of an allowable “short-term” stay. Unlike NYC’s ordinance, the California home-sharing ordinances don’t impose guest restrictions or require hosts to be onsite during stays.Nationally, there’s a shortage of 7.3 million rental homes deemed affordable and available to renters with extremely low incomes, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition.“In the context of the housing crisis, especially in these big cities like New York, San Francisco or Austin [Texas], there’s a demand to regulate these short-term rental platforms and possibly find a way to make these units available,” said González, of the Urban Institute.“So, there will be cities looking at how New York City’s ban is successful in not only controlling this market but reaching those goals in terms of affordability and availability.”...GovTech, 2d ago
new WIC has proven to be one of the best investments we can make in children and families, with every federal dollar more than doubling its return on investment. Research shows that WIC improves health outcomes for women and babies, including lower rates of premature birth and infant mortality; strengthens cognitive development in young children; and provides better access to a variety of health care services. A series of updates to the WIC nutrition package implemented in 2009 is associated with healthier options being available in WIC-authorized stores and healthier food purchases among participants. And in the decade that followed those updates, the obesity rates among children ages two to four on WIC declined nationwide. The Hill, 2d ago
new Recent analysis, including a new report by financial analytics firm Risk Control, bolsters one of many of these recommendations, suggesting that by putting in place modern risk management techniques and innovations, the World Bank could unlock nearly $190 billion in additional lending without risking a credit downgrade. Moreover, securitization—an entirely common way of obtaining leverage in the commercial world—of 10 percent of the World Bank’s portfolio of sovereign loans could further generate an additional $29 billion to $41 billion in new lending headroom. As other multilateral development banks follow suit, the amount of liquidity in the international financial system should increase dramatically, allowing emerging economies to invest more sustainably in their own green transformations and their people.Foreign Policy, 2d ago

new It’s imperative to think about the working conditions of infectious disease (“ID”) specialists if we’re serious about sustaining a pipeline. ID doctors are renowned in the medical education world for their meticulous history-taking and comprehensive review of medical records. Given their pivotal role in antibiotic stewardship, infection control, and diverse diagnostic challenges, it is not uncommon to witness ID pvractitioners tirelessly working long hours, even on weekends and holidays. Although this isn’t universally applicable to all ID physicians, the exposure of the field to trainees, including me, significantly shapes our perception of ID specialists — often depicted as overworked, burdened with bureaucratic tasks, and inadequately compensated.STAT, 2d ago
Scholars have described African responses to European demand for enslaved labor and the experiences of enslaved women in the Americas, but we have much to learn about the slave trade’s profoundly gendered effects on African societies. How did Atlantic slaving affect women in Africa? How were women enslaved? How did female captives confront and endure the Middle Passage? How did women shape insurrections? By investigating enslaved African women’s experiences and actions, we can more fully envision resistance to slavery, beginning in West Africa and flowing across the Atlantic. In our own time, Unity serves as a reminder of women’s centrality to world-shaping processes, their resilience, and their power to challenge seemingly insurmountable forces in pursuit of a more secure future.nationalhumanitiescenter.org, 3d ago
new Mitsotakis’s government might struggle to convince the public of its role as pious conservators of Greek architectural heritage, however. It has long suffered from a problematic relationship with the Greek Archaeological Association, clashing over the preservation of Greek ancient heritage, with critics arguing that the government is prioritising economic considerations over the protection of the sites. A new passageway made of reinforced concrete and a lift enabling disabled access to the site of the Acropolis fuelled an outpouring of condemnation. Yannis Hamilakis, professor of archaeology and modern Greek studies at Brown University, argued that these alterations played into the “neo-classical colonialist and nationalist dream” with little prior study. In a country where tourism is the main industry, attracting more visitors to the site seems to many to have been the main consideration driving the changes.the Guardian, 2d ago

Newswise — In today's medical landscape, antibiotics are pivotal in combatting bacterial infections. These potent compounds, produced by bacteria and fungi, act as natural defenses against microbial attacks. A team of researchers delved into the intricate world of glycopeptide antibiotics – a vital resource in countering drug-resistant pathogens – to uncover their evolutionary origins. Dr. Demi Iftime and Dr. Martina Adamek headed this interdisciplinary project, guided by Professors Evi Stegmann and Nadine Ziemert from the “Controlling Microbes to Fight Infections” Cluster of Excellence at the University of Tübingen, with support from Professor Max Cryle and Dr. Mathias Hansen from Monash University in Australia.Using advanced bioinformatics, the team sought to decipher the chemical blueprint of ancient glycopeptide antibiotics. By understanding their evolutionary trajectory, the researchers were looking for insights that could steer the development of future antibiotics for medical applications. The team’s study has been published in the latest edition of Nature Communications.Tracing an Evolutionary Path“Antibiotics emerge from an ongoing evolutionary tug-of-war between different organisms, each striving to outmaneuver or curtail the spread of their adversaries,” explains Evi Stegmann. To explore this, the researchers utilized the glycopeptide antibiotics teicoplanin and vancomycin, along with related compounds sourced from specific bacterial strains. These compounds, built from amino acids and sugars, disrupt bacterial cell wall construction, ultimately leading to bacterial death. Notably, teicoplanin and vancomycin exhibit this potency against numerous human pathogens. In simplified terms, scientists often organize species into an evolutionary tree structure to illustrate their relationships. Similarly, the research team constructed a family tree of known glycopeptide antibiotics, linking their chemical structures via gene clusters that encode their blueprints. Employing bioinformatics algorithms, they deduced a putative ancestral form of these antibiotics – which they dubbed “paleomycin.” By reconstructing the genetic pathways they believed to produce paleomycin, the team successfully synthesized the compound, which displayed antibiotic properties in tests. “Recreating such an ancient molecule was exhilarating, akin to bringing dinosaurs or wooly mammoths back to life,” remarks Ziemert.Connecting Evolution to Practicality“One intriguing finding is that all glycopeptide antibiotics stem from a common precursor,” Stegmann says. “Moreover, the core structure of paleomycin mirrors the complexity seen in teicoplanin, while vancomycin exhibits a simpler core. We speculate that recent evolution streamlined the latter’s structure, yet its antibiotic function remained unchanged,” Ziemert adds. This family of antibiotics – though beneficial for bacteria producing them – demand substantial energy due to their complex chemical composition. Streamlining this complexity while retaining efficacy could confer an evolutionary advantage. The researchers meticulously traced the evolution of these antibiotics and their underlying genetic sequences, investigating pivotal steps required for creating functional molecules. In collaboration with Australian scientists, some of these steps were replicated in laboratory settings. “This journey through time revealed profound insights into the evolution of bacterial antibiotic pathways and nature's optimization strategies, leading to modern glycopeptide antibiotics,” says Ziemert. “This provides us with a solid foundation for advancing this crucial antibiotic group using biotechnology.”...newswise.com, 3d ago
We are struggling as a nation even to get our schools back to where they were in terms of supporting student learning, but these costs will be permanent if we just return schools to the status quo in March 2020. Our schools must improve if we are going to eliminate the burden of lost learning. Evidence from a variety of experiences in other nations shows that the losses students experienced will persist if schools simply return to business as usual. For example, several German states had short school years in the 1960s when policymakers sought to standardize school calendars nationwide. The earnings of students educated during that period stand out throughout their careers from those of students educated before and after the adjustment, and not in a good way. Other examples of extended school disruptions—for example, due to prolonged teacher strikes—show similarly persistent impacts.Education Next, 3d ago
Newswise — Ana Mateos and Jesús Rodríguez, scientists at the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH), have published a paper in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology which shows that large herbivore carrion, a resource that had formerly been abundant and accessible to hominins, became scarcer at the end of the Early Pleistocene due to changes in the Iberian fauna.Hominins arrived in the Iberian Peninsula about 1.4 million years ago, where they found a wide variety of food resources including a great abundance of carcasses of large herbivores partially consumed by a diversity of predators, important among which were two species of sabre-tooth cats (Homotherium latidens and Megantereon whitei). They also encountered a powerful competitor in these ecosystems, the giant hyena (Pachycrocuta brevirostris). However, as the same authors showed in earlier work, the wealth of food and diversity of the ecosystems at this period made the coexistence of hominins and giant hyenas competing for carrion possible. That being said, around one million years ago there were major climatic changes which restructured the ecosystems of the whole of Europe. In the Iberian Peninsula, the large mammal fauna suffered the extinction of several species, including the giant hyena and one of the sabre-tooth cats (M. whitei), leading to lower availability of carrion.Virtual simulationsThe researchers employed a computational model which enables experiments in a virtual environment that simulate the behavior of hyenas and hominins competing for carrion. Each experiment represents a different ecological scenario, defined by the predator species present, the productivity of the ecosystem, and the competition for carrion with other species like vultures or small carnivores.“The giant hyenas and hominins could coexist in competition for carrion prior to the extinction of the sabre-tooth Megantereon and other predators, like the lycaons (canids) and pumas. However, after those predators disappeared carrion became scantier. This coincides with the extinction of the giant hyena”, explains Mateos.According to the results of these experiments, among the key factors that determined these changes were the low productivity of the ecosystems during the very cold intervals of the period, strong competition with scavengers other than the giant hyena, and the likely social behavior of the other great sabre-tooth (H. latidens).Unlike hyenas, which would have depended exclusively on large herbivore carcasses for food, hominin behavior would have been much more flexible as they could also exploit plant resources like fruit, berries or roots, hunt small animals and even kill larger ones.“This greater flexibility in procuring food would have allowed them to survive and adapt to the new prevailing ecological conditions following the changes in the climate and fauna one million years ago”, adds Rodríguez. The only participant in this paper from outside the CENIEH was Ericson Hoelzchen, a scientist at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), at Trier University (Cognitive Social Simulation Lab). This work forms part of the project TROPHIc (PID2019-105101GB-I00, MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033).newswise.com, 3d ago
Despite commitments to scale up and speed up climate action, the fiscal cost of government support for fossil fuels almost doubled in 2022 to reach more than USD 1.4 trillion as governments across the OECD and partner countries introduced substantial initiatives to mitigate high energy costs on households and firms, caused in part by Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. This rising trend is a real threat to our collective net zero goals and highlights the challenges of staying on track with net zero commitments in the face of geopolitical and economic disruption. Going forward, it will be critical that support measures are reformed to better target those most in need. Support for fossil fuels should also be phased out as soon as possible. This will help free up much needed resources for the transition towards net zero emissions and accelerate innovation to improve energy efficiency.oecd-ilibrary.org, 3d ago

In other news, Yicai reports that China’s total installed renewable energy capacity has surpassed 1.4 terawatts (TW), and accounting for nearly 50% of power generation nationwide. It is expected that by the end of the year, the installed capacity for renewable energy generation nationwide will exceed 1.45TW, with wind and solar power capacity surpassing 1TW. Energy outlet BJX News says that the National Energy Administration (NEA) is “steadfast in targeting the dual carbon goals, implementing a variety of measures to promote the high-quality advancement of renewable energy”. Chinese industry outlet IN-EN.com reports that the ministry of natural resources (MNR) has issued a policy which asks that “solar arrays’ land should not encroach upon arable land…if other agricultural land must be utilised, it should be done reasonably and with effective control, emphasising the conservation and intensive use of land, while minimising potential impacts on ecology and agricultural production as much as possible”. Utility Drive reports that despite considerable efforts by governments around the world to enhance energy efficiency, China and some other areas have seen a “slowdown in energy intensity improvement”, contributing to “a lack of global progress”.Carbon Brief, 3d ago

First, a culture of urgency is essential. What I mean by “culture of urgency” is to unite all constituents around a mission and to be clear about where we currently fall short. Urgency does not mean to place so much pressure on teachers and staff that their longevity in the profession is unlikely. Often, in urban education, urgency is created from an incident. Boston Latin School received national attention in 2016 when Black students at BLS shared issues on campus that resulted in their feeling unseen and unheard. After this, we worked in partnership with the Boston Public Schools Office of Equity to build new systems for reporting bias-based incidents. We also engaged in whole-staff professional development and school-wide dialogues about race and equity. Our personnel committee worked intentionally to further diversify our staff so that more students saw themselves in the adults around them—we hired talented educators across racial, gender, and sexuality identities, including the first Asian American and openly LGBTQ+ assistant heads of school in the institution’s history. Hiring with diverse representation as a core value is not, as some would claim, putting identity politics ahead of education. Actually, it’s crucially important to educational success. We watched our students find outlets on staff when experiencing microaggressions, when seeking to institute new programming on campus, or when desiring a space to just be.Education Next, 3d ago
Dr Arunabha Ghosh, CEO, CEEW, said, “The CEEW study clearly shows that not everyone is equally responsible for increasing global carbon emissions. The top 10 per cent in many developing countries emit less than the average per capita emissions in developed countries. This, once again, drives home the scientific basis for ‘common but differentiated responsibilities’, especially as COP28 holds up a mirror to past pledges and broken promises. The findings make the need for accountability and long-term climate finance both imperative and immediate. We can no longer argue why emerging economies need carbon space, or cheap and convenient finance to power their sustainable futures. Moreover, there is no technological substitute for more conscious consumption. Developed countries must make sustainable consumption aspirational, just like India’s Mission LiFE, which nudges individual action to catalyse global changes for people, prosperity and the planet.”...CEEW, 3d ago
Male reproduction is mainly limited by access to females (Bateman, 1948), therefore, torpor or estivation by males could reduce male reproductive success. Furthermore, sperm quantity and quality is dependent on body temperature (Moore, 1926; Pérez-Crespo et al., 2008) and while typically resolved by externalizing the testes to the scrotum during excessive heat, a decrease in body temperature, as is seen in females (discussed below), could reduce sperm viability. Maintaining consistent body temperatures also allows for regular biological reactions, such as enzymatic processes and protein folding which have evolved to function best at a single temperature and can influence a series of functions not directly related to reproduction, such as growth rate, metabolic biorhythms and environmental sensing (Glucksmann, 1974; Hochachka and Somero, 2002; McPherson and Chenoweth, 2012; Calisi et al., 2018). Our data support this as body temperature was unchanged for dehydrated males compared with their hydrated counterparts for the entire experiment, suggesting a maintenance of reproductive investment at the cost of long-term survival. The Company of Biologists, 3d ago

Here we investigate whether the emergence of collective oscillations at the population level quenches noise entropy by synchronizing neuronal firing or contributes to an expansion of the number of the possible spike-pattern configurations explored by the circuit by intensifying chaos. To do so, we advance the tractability of large neuronal spiking networks of exactly solvable neuronal models by developing a strategy that allows analyzing the dynamics of delayed spiking networks in a system with fixed and finite degrees of freedom. By building a two-stage model of the action potential generation and transmission, we map the infinite-dimensional system to a finite one and semi-analytically compute the entire spectrum of Lyapunov exponents whose positive sum is a direct proxy for the network’s noise entropy (6). We find that when delays are small, the dimensionality of the attractor increases linearly with the delay while keeping noise entropy constant, analogously to what has been reported in simplified delayed systems (28, 29). Larger delays destabilize the asynchronous irregular dynamics of the spiking network, giving rise to population oscillations in the beta frequency range (∼ 20 Hz). We show that this transition is achieved via Hopf bifurcation of the mean activity at a critical set of parameters that can be computed exactly, and is analogous to what is reported in network models without a dynamical mechanism for action potential generation (15–18). Unexpectedly, the noise entropy, together with the dimensionality of the chaotic attractor, is boosted at the oscillatory instability. To investigate the mechanism that underlies this effect, we drive a network with a periodic external input, to first order, analogous to the one that the network receives at the oscillatory transition. We find that the external periodic drive dramatically boosts noise entropy in the neighborhood of the resonant frequency of the network, and quenches it otherwise. We find that a realistic drive, in which collective activity has short transients of oscillatory activity with drifting frequencies, leads to only moderate changes in the noise entropy. Our results indicate that simple dynamics of the mean activity can have a profound effect on the chaotic dynamics of the network and that realistic transient synchrony signals could, beyond flexibly gating information transmission, prevent boosting of undesired variability in the cortex.elifesciences.org, 6d ago
The ease of the current payment system is in line with the globalization era which makes the world seem borderless. The economic integration that occurs as a result of globalization makes it important to implement cross-border payments immediately. Cross-border payments allow for faster and cheaper payments to be made between countries. However, its implementation faces various challenges such as domestic governance, infrastructure gaps in different countries, and the high costs. These high costs have two negative effects, as stated in the writing of European Central Bank economist, Fabio Panetta, on October 31, 2023. First, many small and medium businesses find it difficult to expand their business across borders because of operational costs. Second, the world’s most vulnerable populations pay disproportionately more than others, for example migrant workers can face exorbitant costs when sending money home.Modern Diplomacy, 7d ago
Although the U.S. faces population growth and aging challenges in the decades ahead, we are still in a better position than many other developed countries such as Japan, Italy, Germany, and other European nations—due in large part to the healthy immigration levels we experienced over the past 30 to 40 years. While immigration remains a hot-button political issue that focuses on illegal immigrants and asylum seekers, it is crucial to move the discussion to a serious analysis of the importance of immigration for the nation’s demographic and economic growth, and how broad policies such as comprehensive immigration reform can address our future needs. The new census projections should play a central role in those discussions.Brookings, 4d ago
According to a 2019 report from the JFSA, pension payments for Japanese citizens are expected to decrease gradually in the future. Additionally, Japan’s unique lifetime employment system within corporations is gradually fading. With Japan’s increasingly aging population, coupled with the erosion of purchasing power due to inflation, those who persist in leaving their savings in the bank without earning interest may encounter the crisis of elder poverty.Habitto targets financial novices by starting with savings, a financial product that Japanese people understand well. They provide a deposit interest rate of 0.3%, surpassing the near-zero rates offered by most banks. In addition, they target the psychological fear among the Japanese of not being able to recover their principal, emphasizing the deposit insurance system. ..."A small region like the Gaza Strip, devoid of natural resources and autonomous sources of income, cannot sustain itself independently, both economically and politically, given its high population density over an extended period. Thus, the real solution is the acceptance of these refugees by global nations genuinely interested in their well-being. This should be complemented by generous financial aid from the international community, including the State of Israel. This approach is the only viable one to end the suffering and anguish of both Jews and Arabs. The State of Israel can no longer tolerate an independent entity in Gaza, which, as mentioned, fundamentally thrives on animosity towards Israel and a desire to annihilate it."...Sott.net, 18d ago
We argue that the Democratic Party’s evolution on economic policy helps explain partisan realignment by education. We show that less-educated Americans differentially demand “predistribution” policies (e.g., a federal jobs guarantee, higher minimum wages, protectionism, and stronger unions), while more-educated Americans differentially favor redistribution (taxes and transfers). This educational gradient in policy preferences has been largely unchanged since the 1940s. We then show the Democrats’ supply of predistribution has declined since the 1970s. We tie this decline to the rise of a self-described “New Democrat” party faction who court more educated voters and are explicitly skeptical of predistribution. Consistent with this faction’s growing influence, we document the significant growth of donations from highly educated donors, especially from out-of-district donors, who play an increasingly important role in Democratic (especially “New Democrat”) primary campaigns relative to Republican primaries. In response to these within-party changes in power, less-educated Americans began to leave the Democratic Party in the 1970s, after decades of serving as the party’s base. Roughly half of the total shift can be explained by their changing views of the parties’ economic policies. We also show that in the crucial transition period of the 1970s and 1980s, New Democrat-aligned candidates draw disproportionately from more-educated voters in both survey questions and actual Congressional elections.NBER, 27d ago

On 3 October 2023, the Government of Pakistan announced plans to repatriate 'illegal foreigners".' In view of the ongoing humanitarian and human rights concerns for Afghans, particularly for women and girls,UNHCR and 10M issued a joint statement urging Pakistan to maintain the protection space for Afghans in need of safety. This was followed by a joint statement by UNHCR. 10M. and UNICEF which appealed for the protection of children and families seeking safety in Pakistan. On 10 November. UNHCR declared an internal Level 2 emergency for Pakistan and Afghanistan for six months to scale up the humanitarian response in light of the rapidly evolving situation. Population trends during the reporting period indtated that most returns were voluntary although deportations through Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossing points were also recorded. People arriving at the borderare exhausted and require urgent assistance as well as psychosocial support. Arrivals back to Afghanistan are also adding to the worsening humanitarian crisis, as winter temperatures start to dip to -4T in some locations. Many Afghan retumees are vulnerable. including women and children who could lose their lives in a harsh winter if left without adequate shelter. 1.3 million undocumented Afghans are estimated to reside in Pakistan. Approximately 720.000 undocumented individuals and 50.000 assisted voluntary repatriations (Proof of Registration (FOR) cardholders) are expected to require support at border points from now through July 2024. The sudden surge in returns in recent weeks is putting pressure an already strained resources, including shelter and basic services. Additional support is urgently required. UNHCR and partners in Pakistan and Afghanistan are currently working together to ensure a harmonized and coordinated cross-border response to this new emergency. To support these efforts. an interagency Border Consortium Appeal was launched on 8 November. In addition. UNHCR and partners are also stepping up their presence in and around Torkham and Chaman border crossing points and accelerating efforts to ensure protection-sensitive mechanisms are in place via regular border monitoring visits and protection screenings to identify and assist people with heightened vUlner[abilities and needs.ReliefWeb, 3d ago
One of the key themes we’ll be exploring is the impact of AI on food security. As the global population continues to grow, the demand for food is escalating. How can AI contribute to sustainable and resilient food systems that can withstand the shocks of climate change, pests and other external pressures? Can AI help us unlock new pathways to enhance the nutritional value of crops, diversify agricultural practices and ensure that no one goes hungry?...Agrilinks, 3d ago
Oxygen sustains virtually all animal life. Yet, many animals live in environments where oxygen is limited. The striped catfish (Pangasionodon hypophthalmus) is native to waterways in Southeast Asia where heavy pollution lowers oxygen levels significantly. Fortunately, the striped catfish is one of a few fish species with a unique superpower – they have the ability to breathe air. When oxygen levels in the water fall too low, these catfish swim to the surface and take big gulps of air. Oxygen from the air then diffuses into the blood, allowing the fish to survive where other species would perish. However, molecules that are carried in solution tend to diffuse from an area of high concentration to low concentration, placing the gulped oxygen – now at high concentrations in the fish's blood – at risk of being lost to the oxygen-depleted waters in their environment through the fish's disproportionately large gills. In a new study led by Magnus Aaskov from Aarhus University, Denmark, a team of scientists from across the globe (including from University of North Texas, USA, Can Tao University, Vietnam, and Nagasaki University, Japan) aimed to understand the fate of the freshly gulped oxygen carried in the striped catfish's blood. The Company of Biologists, 3d ago
Marina Vujačić, a longtime human rights activist and executive director of the Association of Youth with Disabilities of Montenegro (UMHCG), believes that the role of women in Montenegro is still defined by tradition, mentality, and expectations, which also affect women with disabilities. “Women in Montenegro are still expected to be good wives and mothers, and if they don’t fulfil these roles, whatever else they achieve is not considered enough. On the other hand, women with disabilities are expected to do the opposite – not to fulfil these roles because they are perceived as less capable. Therefore, the attitude towards women with disabilities is doubly challenging, as they have to convince society that they are entitled to all basic rights and fight for them. These pressures are sometimes open and direct, and often subtle, and therefore dangerous because they lead women with disabilities to a position of disempowerment, violence, and guilt”, she stated, adding that society does not support even those who are empowered because it believes they don't need any support.UNDP, 3d ago
...“So suddenly, a rider of choice … this becomes a much more of a viable option,” said Hoffman.Moves to a citywide dynamic microtransit system will make transit a more viable mobility option for the 650 households with no car, and about a third of the households with only one car, suggesting about 30 percent of the population has “the potential need for transit,” said Hoffman. It’s the kind of change that aids in workforce development by realistically getting workers to their jobs, and opens up access to fresh foods and shopping opportunities.“Opening grocery markets, in whatever way possible, basically creates more customers,” said Heather Arnold, senior manager for Economic Development for Physical Stores at Amazon, speaking on the panel. “What if we had better ways to get customers to the store?”Often, said Arnold, the market forces needed to develop a grocery store in many neighborhoods do not exist, given the cost of the development and revenue requirements. So, if cities can find ways to make it easier to get residents to the stores they already have, “food deserts” could be mitigated.“You cannot make a risky move that fails. You just can’t,” said Arnold, remarking on the idea of building a new store, given the narrow profit margins for grocery stores. The new transit system in Winchester goes live this spring. Fares will be free at first, and then transition to about $1 per ride. What riders care about, said Hoffman, is “how quickly can I get to the grocery store? And how much will it cost?”...GovTech, 3d ago
In the modern world, we are increasingly dependent on technological infrastructure such as power grids, communication systems, and satellites. However, this dependency makes us increasingly vulnerable to the effects of large geomagnetic storms. "The longer the power supply could be cut off, the more society, especially those living in urban areas, will struggle to cope," Designated Assistant Professor Hayakawa, the lead author of the study, explains. Such storms could be big enough to knock out the power grid, communication systems, airplanes, and satellites in the worst case. "Could we maintain our life without such infrastructure?" Hayakawa comments: "Well, let us just say that it would be extremely challenging."...ScienceDaily, 3d ago

The demand channel of monetary policy passes through the traction that policy tightening has on spend-ing in the economy. This channel involves mostly core prices rather than energy prices since the latter are more exogenously determined while the former are more elastic to domestic demand. This distinction is particularly pronounced in the post-pandemic period, as energy prices were determined by global factors and amplified by the war in Ukraine, especially in the euro area. Since households in the right tail of the expenditure distribution consume relatively more of the core goods, they also reap more benefits from a stronger monetary policy response in terms of preserving their purchasing power compared with the more vulnerable consumers. To illustrate this channel, we consider a stylised general equilibrium model in which households with different income levels consume different shares of energy and core goods, and the price of energy is exogenously determined. We use Italian data to calibrate the model so that vulnera-ble households represent the first quintile of families in the expenditure distribution. Figure 3 shows the response of the gap between consumer prices for vulnerable and affluent households to a ten per cent in-crease in the price of energy, for different values of the Taylor coefficient on inflation and alternative cali-brations of the policy rate smoothing parameter. Regardless of the degree of monetary policy inertia, a stronger response of monetary policy to inflation causes an increase in the price gap.CEPR, 8d ago
The rapid development of the world’s renewable energy capacity will require the use of a great deal more land, which is not always easy to come by. While many governments worldwide are backing huge solar projects, getting landowners and local communities to support the development of these sites can prove difficult. In recent years, there has been a significant rise in the quantity of dual-purpose land use, as farmers welcome the use of energy-producing equipment alongside animal grazing or crop production. A growing number of farms are now home to solar panels, which help supply the land needed for energy production while providing farmers with an extra source of income.OilPrice.com, 9d ago
And so it has been. Americans have never viewed Social Security as one more social welfare program. To them, it is “their money.” Attempts to change the benefit formula are viewed with utmost suspicion. Two other program characteristics reinforce the public impression. First, Social Security benefits are related, albeit loosely, to the amounts workers pay in taxes. The formula is weighted in favor of low earners, but, with many exceptions, the more workers “contribute,” the higher the monthly benefit they receive in retirement. This design may not be ideal as a policy matter, as it directs public resources toward middle and upper-middle-class households that might be more usefully sent to those with the lowest earnings. Nevertheless, there is no question of its political value in sustaining public support for the program.Second, Social Security receipts and spending are tracked in two “trust funds” (for old age and survivors; and disability benefits) that were created to encourage elected leaders to enforce the program’s self-financing principle across generations (the disability fund was added to the account for old age protection in the 1950s; other legislative expansions also provided family support benefits to the payouts for eligible workers). The prominence of the trust fund accounting convention has further deepened the perception that the “workers’ money” has been set aside from the rest of the federal budget and is reserved for payouts to eligible beneficiaries.Law & Liberty, 28d ago

Those limits tightened even further in 1805 when the Reverend George Austen died, leaving his womenfolk—Jane, Cassandra, and their mother—living on their small personal incomes, supplemented by gifts from the remaining Austen men, at least one of whom was wealthy. Even so, Miss Austen was still expected to look as if there had been no change in her circumstances. Turning up to a supper party or a church service in conspicuously shabby or out-of-date clothing would have telegraphed her family’s declining resources, not to mention her own deficient “taste.” In an age of sensibility, she was expected to be au fait with the prevailing trends while avoiding any suggestion of what one contemporary source defined with a shudder as “particularity.” Davidson reports that nearly half of Jane Austen’s modest annual income went toward this delicate balancing act of being fashionable but not too fashionable. The New York Review of Books, 3d ago
Epistemology: Beyond psychological dynamics, some have identified epistemological deficiencies as a root cause for misinformation: issues with how users find and assess information especially online. Some have focused on online search or 'research' (Tripodi, 2018), behaviours, or looked more broadly at verification strategies (Schwarzenegger, 2019; Flintham et al., 2018). Expanding this focus on epistemology to the social level, others have ascribed the problems of misinformation to a broad national shift in the treatment of evidence and facts. Much of this work has drawn implicitly or explicitly on Foucauldian 'regimes of truth' (1980) or Jasanoff's 'civic epistemologies' (2004). The implication is that in recent years, the US has seen a broad shift both in the discourse around and mechanisms of how truth/falsehood is established in society. At the same time, this aligns with the long-recognised tactic by authoritarians to undermine the public's ability to sort truth from falsehoods (Arendt, 1951). Relatedly, many have ascribed the spread of misinformation, at least in part, to a broad reduction in trust in institutions. Public opinion surveys have tracked such a decline in trust across institutions for decades, and now, truth in most institutions is at historic lows (Pew, 2022). This work recognises that trust plays an essential role in public knowledge production: whether that is trusting the government to provide accurate information, trusting scientists to accurately describe their unique access to and understanding of the natural world, or trusting media to accurately and objectively describe the world.Internet Policy Review, 3d ago
...“It is worth reflecting that only half of the rate rises we have seen in the past year across the major economies have gone through the economy. It takes about two years for the full effect to come through, so inevitably there will be a continued impact from this long series of raised interest rates. The question is that if rates have currently peaked in the US, how long will they need to be held given that inflation is still running at 3.7 per cent still, above the Fed’s target of two per cent. This present summit of interest rates that have been reached begs the question, ‘how big is this mountain top?’, and how long will the Fed use these restrictive interest rates to dampen inflation?”...London Business School, 3d ago
Another important takeaway from the map is that almost all developing countries are increasing their per capita emissions of GHGs. As a group, developing countries (ex-China) now account for over 40% of global emissions. Without progress in these countries, there is little chance for the world to achieve its 1.5-degree target. Most developing countries, of course, are starting from a very low base, so an increase in emission levels is neither surprising nor unjust. But even these countries can contribute more to global efforts, especially if supported by the international community.Brookings, 3d ago
The holidays usually mean colder days, at least for those living in the northern part of the world, which also means rising costs in order to keep oneself warm and toasty. Fireplaces might sound and look romantic, but they’re not efficient, sustainable, or even safe. The same goes for gasoline-powered heaters, which also add an element of risk to people’s health. In this day and age, smart appliances play an important role in living a life of comfort without the downsides and expenses of traditional products, so it’s not really surprising that GoveeLife has launched a number of new smart space heaters for that very purpose. While Govee is probably best known for its smart lighting solutions, it established GoveeLife this year to focus on smart home appliances like heaters, humidifiers, smart kitchen appliances, and sensors, aiming to enhance convenience, optimize efficiency, and improve overall quality of life. In particular, the compact GoveeLife Smart Space Heater Lite piqued our interest, so we took it to the test to see if it’s really such a hot product or just hot air.Yanko Design - Modern Industrial Design News, 3d ago
Niels E. Hower, Member of the Executive Board at BENEO says: “In a world with a growing population, efficient food production is not just a necessity for food security and environmental protection; it’s also an economic imperative. We’re excited to be at the forefront of new plant-based developments. And due to the high consumer interest, we made the decision to expand our range of cost-effective plant-based solutions to also include beef alternatives which can easily be integrated into existing production processes. The alternatives market is largely focused on replacing chicken or processed applications like hamburgers and meatballs. So, the addition of Meatless® Beef Bites and Minced Meat products offers manufacturers an even broader spectrum of choice.”...Asia Food Journal, 4d ago

The first is the “Great Gatsby Curve” — a term popularized by Miles Corak — which shows the link between a country’s income inequality and the likelihood of its residents to experience upward mobility. Being born into wealth means you can easily tap into your family’s financial resources to grasp opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. Conversely, those from poorer backgrounds are restricted by their limited means. Consider the example of education as a pathway to earning more than one’s parents. If the financial burden of education weighs more heavily on the poor due to the need of forgoing years of income and having minimal savings, then the wealthy are in a better position to invest in their education. Ergo, charts representing the relationship between income inequality and income mobility across generations tend to show a strong correlation. Since American inequality is believed to be on the rise, mobility must be waning.AIER, 26d ago
COVID-19 drove many cities throughout the nation to dramatically increase the number of online services available to residents. Los Angeles is one such city.“The COVID-19 pandemic forever obstructed our world,” explained Ted Ross, CIO and general manager of the city of Los Angeles Information Technology Agency. “As a result, L.A. made it a point to be contactless and people-centered. Why should someone have to come in contact with another person to get something done? … Why can’t it be online?”“Contactless government is extremely impactful,” Ross added. To offer more online services, the city first inventoried all of its software to determine what makes each piece modern or legacy. IT employees then identified available platforms, best practices and lessons learned to develop recommendations to modernize all apps across every city department. All told, more than 130 apps have been modernized.“We wanted to take advantage of the horrible situation that COVID-19 was to be a better government and a better digital government,” Ross said. “It allowed us to recover to a new better, not just a new normal.”Ross also cites the city’s efforts to strengthen its IT workforce as one of its most critical IT achievements in the past year. Between March 2020 and December 2022, he said some 25 percent of L.A.’s IT workforce left their positions.“We know that IT employees are uniquely at risk of seeking other job opportunities,” Ross explained. “And we knew if we were going to implement the tech Angelinos expected, we needed to dramatically change how we recruit and retain IT employees.”Ross said the city committed to a 12-step IT workforce plan, which said that Los Angeles would need to focus on hiring and retaining more than the “stereotypical young person who can code.” To meet that goal, the city, working with a consultant, developed four categories of tech talent: emerging technology architects, modern system developers, heritage system experts and flexible technology leaders. The city outlined a recruitment plan, highlighting specific places to find new talent. It laid out what attracts new IT talent and what drives it away. City leaders also updated job classifications. To help retention, Los Angeles increased the ways tech employees could connect, communicate and “hang out” together, either in person or digitally.Ross said that since the launch of the plan, L.A.’s IT workforce has seen a 23 percent reduction in IT vacancies, an 81 percent reduction in IT staff departures, and various increases in project delivery and incident response productivity.Click here to read about all the winners in this population category.*The Center for Digital Government is part of e.Republic, Government Technology’s parent company.GovTech, 25d ago
Paper money, produced “ex nihilo” and injected into the economy through bank credit, is not only chronically inflationary, it also causes malinvestment, “boom-and-bust” cycles, and brings about a situation of over-indebtedness. Once governments and banks in particular start faltering under their debt load and, as a result, the economy is in danger of contracting, the printing up of additional money appears all too easily to be a policy of choosing the lesser evil to escape the problems that have been caused by credit-produced paper money in the first place. Looking at the world today — in which many economies have been using credit-produced paper monies for decades and where debt loads are overwhelmingly high, the current challenges are in a sense quite similar to those prevailing in the Weimar Republic more than 90 years ago. Now as then, a reform of the monetary order is badly needed; and the sooner the challenge of monetary reform is taken on, the smaller will be the costs of adjustment.Mises Institute, 19d ago
Meanwhile, the epidemic was gathering pace: in America, there was a new HIV diagnosis every minute, and four Aids deaths an hour. By 1991, 100,000 Americans had died of Aids, double the number killed in Vietnam. A further 42,000 US deaths were predicted for 1993, 50,000 for 1994. In 1993, the WHO reported 110,000 Aids cases in Europe, a massive underestimate (only 132 cases were claimed in the Russian Federation); over half of them were already dead. In the same year, the Concorde study into the effectiveness of AZT, which followed nearly two thousand patients from England, France and Ireland over a three-year period, reported its conclusions: the drug that had for years dominated research agendas and blotted horizons for Aids patients, swallowed up the vast majority of public funding and produced enormous profits for Burroughs Wellcome, made no long-term difference to survival. Concorde, in defiance of Act Up principles, had maintained a placebo cohort: these patients were more likely to have survived the three years of the study than the ones taking AZT. It was a devastating discovery. It showed that Act Up had been right to protest at the focus on AZT to the exclusion of other drugs, but it also suggested that their emphasis on fast-tracking drugs to market (to the possible advantage of pharmaceutical companies selling little more than fresh hope) and avoiding control groups at all costs was mistaken. It also made an end to the epidemic seem much further away. Act Up had in the meantime broken up: its activist and research wings parted ways, with the chastened T&D Committee turning itself into a think tank, the Treatment Action Group. In an epilogue to the paperback of his book, printed in 1995, Garfield ended on a miserable, angry note:...London Review of Books, 17d ago
Sudan is one of the most diverse countries. A country with more than 70 spoken languages and more than 500 ethnic tribes with diverse cultures and social interests. This diversity has plagued the country with never-ending conflicts. A careful analysis of the determinants of civil wars and fragile democracy in Sudan attempts to point to a more complex picture in the country. Deep political and economic development failures—not tribalism or ethnic hatred and ethnic diversity—cause the recent rise in the prevalence of civil wars that impacted Sudan and represent the root causes of Sudan's problems. The implication is that political and economic development can effectively reduce or eradicate political violence in Sudan.idea.int, 5d ago
However, the growth of the sports nutrition market faces a hindrance due to the perceived need for specialization. Some consumers may view sports nutrition products as applicable only to elite athletes or serious fitness enthusiasts, limiting the market's potential among the broader population. This perception creates a barrier to entry for individuals who may benefit from these products but do not consider themselves part of the targeted demographic. Addressing the restraint of perceived specialization requires targeted marketing and educational efforts to broaden the understanding of sports nutrition's applicability. Highlighting the diverse benefits, including general health and fitness support, could help dispel the notion that these products are exclusively for a niche audience. The industry can work to overcome this restraint and tap into a larger consumer base, by shifting perceptions and emphasizing the inclusivity of sports nutrition, thereby fostering sustained market growth.Allied Market Research, 9d ago

It appears policymakers have been numbed into complacency about large generation outages and near-catastrophic misses over the past decade that include events like Winter Storms Uri and Elliott. But this latest near-catastrophe must be put into context. As mentioned above, NERC and FERC have repeatedly warned that the electric grid has become too dependent on natural gas. I love natural gas. And the increased use of gas (at the expense of coal) in the power sector has helped the U.S. cut its carbon dioxide emissions more than any other country in the world. But unlike coal — and the enriched uranium that fuels a nuclear power plant— gas is a just-in-time fuel. That makes it vulnerable to disruptions in service. And if gas supplies run short, so will electricity supplies.Watts Up With That? • The world's most viewed site on global warming and climate change, 4d ago
Academic progress was evident, as 36% of students demonstrated advancement of over 13 months in their reading age. This aligns with the belief that narratives have the power to shape thoughts and emotions, fostering self-driven behavioural changes.Additionally, the study revealed that two-thirds of students experienced improved wellbeing, emphasising the therapeutic effects of storytelling. The positive impact extended to the staff as well, with 37% reporting increased calmness in the classroom. This underscores the shared emotional experience created through storytelling, benefiting both students and educators.Twinkl, a key education resources provider, has played a significant role in supporting bibliotherapeutic initiatives. By offering a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books - such as Twinkl Originals and Rhino Readers - via a mobile app and online, Twinkl contributes to creating a rich literary environment that enhances the effectiveness of bibliotherapy. Their commitment to providing resources that align with educators' evolving needs fortifies the success of initiatives like the Spring 2023 story time programme. Twinkl continues to develop their book offering to support reading for pleasure. The Reading Framework reinforces the emotional benefits of reading, enabling pupils to express ideas and feelings. Stories serve as a tool for navigating difficult conversations, allowing individuals, especially children, to see themselves in a broader context. Teachers play a crucial role in modelling healthy emotional responses through shared stories."Bibliotherapy is a safe, non-confrontational method of exploring and developing emotions, and can be used to develop an understanding of difficult topics with learners. Children build empathy through their interaction with literature, which in turn has the power to change thoughts and feelings," explained Katie Rose, Subject Leads Segment Manager at Twinkl.Beyond academics, the incorporation of storytelling into daily routines proves to be a potent tool for nurturing well-being, fostering empathy, and creating a positive educational environment. As schools recognize the impact of bibliotherapy, it's clear that the narrative of education is being rewritten, one story at a time.To learn more visit TwinklTwinkl...openPR.com, 4d ago
In 2005, Stronach made headlines around the world when he arbitrarily decided to deploy resources and companies he controlled via controversial dual-share structures to gift hundreds of displaced citizens of New Orleans with rent-free living for five years in new homes surrounded by manicured fields and state-of-the-art sports facilities. And by all accounts, these people benefited from his impulsive desire to show he could do better than U.S authorities when it comes to housing victims of a natural disaster, which is why Corporate Knights suggested he might make a good addition to its proposed Billionaire League of Justice. But the much-hyped long-term vision was to develop “Magnaville” into a self-sustaining community of city-slickers-turned-organic-farmers. And according to project insiders, Stronach quickly lost interest shortly after things got complicated by human behaviour and local politics, not to mention his unrealistic expectations that individuals used to life in the Big Easy would happily tend his fields to earn their keep. As a result, after five years of living in Magnaville, some Katrina victims had their lives disrupted again when the project was shut down.Ivey Business Journal, 4d ago

The reason for this is, first, the issue of safeguarding children; because children progress through life stages at a steady tempo and each stage of life entails changes in their metabolism, hormones, and response to treatment, clinicians rightfully approach trials involving minors with great caution. The same argument goes for pregnant women or women of a childbearing age, as any potential adverse effects can influence the growth of the developing fetus.Rare Disease Advisor, 4d ago
UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt should scrap the pension “triple lock” to pay for net-zero policies, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has said, reports the Daily Telegraph. As high interest rates erode public spending, the government should look for ways to free up money and reduce the UK’s debt pile by “scrapping costly policies” such as the state pension triple lock, the Paris-based organisation has suggested, the article continues. The triple lock means the state pension rises by the highest of inflation, average earnings, or 2.5%, meaning next year it is going up by 8.5%, from £10,600 to £11,502, matching wage growth, the paper notes. Campaigners and charities have said that it is vital to keep the triple lock, reports the Daily Mail. Additionally, an editorial in the Daily Mail decries the “pompous pronouncements” of the OECD and calls for it to “keep their noses out of our business”. A front-page article in the Daily Express says increasing state pensions in line with inflation will cost more than decarbonising power or covering the lost fuel duty revenue from the transition to electric vehicles. Nevertheless, the article says people have reacted with anger to the suggestion, telling the OECD to “keep out of this debate” and to “stick to issues they understand”. A comment piece in the Daily Telegraph from climate-sceptic columnist Matthew Lynn argues it is “time to scrap net-zero”, with the money instead used to give “our elderly the support they deserve”.Carbon Brief, 4d ago
Exploiting the UK’s wind resource, the best in Europe, is vital to achieving our net zero goals. This will require the construction of many more wind farms in promising locations, such as the North Sea, with e.g. predictable winds, shallow water, proximity to centres of population etc. However, as we install more and more wind farms into promising locations overcrowding becomes an issue since the wake of one wind farm becomes the inflow to neighbouring farms. It is thus vital to drive up the efficiency of future wind farms in order to combat these diminishing returns. This necessitates new optimisation methods for designing the layouts of the wind farms of the future. Optimising future wind-farm layouts requires the formulation of a merit function to optimise and a means of evaluating it for all proposed farm layouts. Wind turbines produce turbulent wakes and so turbines located within the central part of a wind farm are exposed to the turbulent wakes of upstream machines rather than the oncoming wind. The power that an individual wind turbine can extract depends on its inflow conditions and turbines situated within the wake of an upstream machines may produce as little as 55% of the power of a turbine in isolation. Further, exposure to an unsteady turbulent inflow can expose the components of wind turbines to fatigue damage. In this talk we will discuss the development of a merit function for wind-farm optimisation; it requires that the farm maximises the power production from a given land area but not at the expense of substantial outages due to maintenance, replacing fatigue-damaged turbine-components. This requires a closer examination of the mechanical response of wind turbines to turbulent inflows. Secondly, we need simple, fast-running (preferably analytical) models to propagate the turbulent wakes produced by the turbines within a wind farm in order to evaluate the merit function a sufficient number of times to obtain an optimal layout. This requires us to advance our understanding of the spreading of turbulent wakes out into a turbulent background, produced either by the wake of an upstream turbine or due to the turbulent nature of the atmospheric boundary layer, by the process of entrainment. We must also further our understanding of the dynamics of the wake, including the proclivity of wind-turbine wakes to “meander” as they progress downstream through consideration of the dominant coherent motions embedded within wind-turbine wakes, such as blade-tip vortices or the effect of the tower/nacelle.Imperial College London, 4d ago
Boerstra also has extensive experience creating optimal indoor environments in homes, schools, and offices. He recently joined the DAT on behalf of TU Delft. From his experience as a senior consultant at an engineering firm, he has strong opinions on the importance of good air quality and thermal comfort, for example. “We have already made great strides regarding health in buildings. But it’s a relatively slow process. It started around 1900. Back then, there were a lot of problems in housing construction, for example, due to moisture and mold growth and particulate exposure from open fires. Then, the Housing Act and building code were created to make homes healthier. Since then, fortunately, our buildings have become much healthier, but we cannot sit back. Because of the energy transition, people in current projects sometimes overshoot, for example, in terms of insulation, so that too little attention is paid to ensuring a sufficient supply of fresh air,” Boerstra says.IO, 4d ago
How individuals cope with adversity or find jobs, among other things, depends on the strength of their relationships within communities and across geographic areas. Research in many disciplines such as economics, sociology, computer science, and statistics therefore rely heavily on social network data. Collecting detailed network data on populations is very costly and, consequently, research often includes only a small part of populations in their analysis. This research project will develop innovative methods to inexpensively collect network data, use the method to create two large datasets on the socio-economic relationships among vulnerable populations. The researchers will match these network data with information on economic and labor market outcomes as well as physical and mental health status. In addition, the researchers will build statistical tools to facilitate the use of these data sets and make these datasets and the toolkit freely available to other researchers. The results of this research project will improve research on several topics such as social learning, risk sharing, and therefore improve policy making. The results will also increase the effectiveness of government and business policies.NBER, 4d ago
The ‘livestock dewormer’ in question is in fact Ivermectin, a very cheap and Nobel prize-winning antiviral drug. After a history of veterinary use, it was approved by the FDA for human use in 1996, has been on the World Health Organisation’s list of essential medicines since at least 2015 and was described in the Journal of Antibiotics in 2020 as an antiviral “wonder drug” that “is continuing to surprise and excite scientists, offering more and more promise to help improve global public health by treating a diverse range of diseases, with its unexpected potential as an antibacterial, antiviral and anti-cancer agent being particularly extraordinary… perhaps more than any other drug, ivermectin is a drug for the world’s poor. For most of this century, some 250 million people have been taking it annually to combat two of the world’s most devastating, disfiguring, debilitating and stigma-inducing diseases, Onchocerciasis [river blindness] and Lymphatic filariasis. Most of the recipients live in remote, rural, desperately under-resourced communities in developing countries and have virtually no access to even the most rudimentary of medical interventions. Moreover, all the treatments have been made available free of charge thanks to the unprecedented drug donation program”.HART, 4d ago

...”The Breakthrough Effect in ASEAN” offers concrete solutions to trigger socioeconomic tipping points that could unlock these opportunities in prioritized sectors most relevant to the region. Amazon is the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, and on a path to powering its global operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025. ASEAN economies can do much more to increase the availability and affordability of renewable energy—and massively scale opportunities for inbound corporate investments in this space in the process. The report identifies specific recommendations in this regard, including leveling the playing field for renewable power project developers, and enabling direct investments (via power purchase agreements) for corporate consumers. We hope ASEAN government leverage corporate consumer demand to boost the renewable energy sector, as this will also bring associated capital, green jobs, the proliferation of green technologies, and a tangible opportunity to meet national climate targets.SYSTEMIQ, 4d ago
PennWharton: “Earlier this year, the employment rate of prime working age women reached an all-time high, passing 75 percent for the first time in U.S. history. Defying widespread expectations that the COVID-19 pandemic would disproportionately harm the economic prospects of women, they have recovered faster than men and played a dominant role in the overall labor market recovery. In a forthcoming working paper, we review the evolution of prime age women’s employment over the last few decades and explain its recent rise. This brief summarizes and previews some of the findings from that ongoing work. We show that the current employment highs are a product of two long-term trends that predate the pandemic: 1) the rising share of women who are college graduates, and 2) a shrinking child penalty for college-educated mothers, who are increasingly likely to remain in the workforce after having a child. Despite the severe disruptions to labor markets, schooling, and childcare caused by the pandemic, these trends continued and even accelerated after 2020. In the full working paper, we link their resilience to the grand gender convergence in labor market outcomes, drawing on the work of Claudia Goldin, who was recently awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in economics. We present additional evidence from changes in the occupational mix of women’s employment, discuss the impact of parental leave, and study the dynamics of child penalties in detail.”...bespacific.com, 4d ago
Our findings reveal that in almost two-thirds of cases, the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) for utility-scale solar power projects was either the same or lower than those for gas-fired projects. The finding was based on responses from institutions that answered both this and last year’s surveys, and covers WACC for projects reaching final investment decision (FID) over three years: 2019, 2021 and 2022. Assuming other parameters remain the same, the result is that utility-scale gas-power projects are perceived as an equal or riskier investment than utility-scale solar PV projects. This can be the result of higher climate-related risks associated with gas power projects, more uncertain demand or fuel prices, as well as more policy support for renewables in general and solar PV in particular. When comparing responses of utility-scale batteries, for projects taking FID in 2022, we found that the WACC for batteries was higher or equal to that of solar PV projects. This trend emerged primarily from the hybrid nature of the projects in the survey, with solar and storage projects increasingly in demand. This year’s survey also shows that nine out 10 respondents expect increases in the cost of capital in emerging and developing economies in 2023.IEA, 4d ago

The ability to work from anywhere in the world is not just a perk for individuals; it’s becoming a strategic consideration for countries looking to attract global talent and stimulate their local economies. However, this also brings challenges. High minimum income requirements in some countries, like Iceland, might be counterproductive to reaping the potential economic benefit of embracing digital nomads. Additionally, the differences in internet infrastructure, as seen in Cyprus, is highly counterproductive to remote workers, who rely on fast internet to perform their jobs productively. There are likely many other factors, but the ones analyzed in Visa Guide’s report will definitely play a major role in determining the success of these programs.Allwork.Space, 4d ago
..."While Ireland's current measures do not explicitly include access to personal hygiene items, the research suggests that incorporating hygiene-related needs into deprivation indices would provide a more accurate depiction of individuals and households experiencing hygiene deprivation. In response to the findings, Hygiene Hub firmly advocates for universal access to hygiene products supported by increased awareness and recognition of the issue. Ideally, individuals facing financial constraints should easily be able to receive these items through established support services."...phys.org, 4d ago

Women experience chronically inferior returns in organizations. One common recommendation is to form instrumental network ties with high-status others in groups. We integrate research on social status, social perceptions, and gender issues in social networks to suggest that, despite the theoretical and empirical appeal of this approach, instrumental ties to high-status network contacts (versus ties to lower-status network contacts) in groups may incur hidden social status costs for women in intragroup status-conferral processes. Instrumental ties to high-status network contacts may be perceived as a sign of agency of the focal person, which violates feminine gender norms. Women with these high-status network contacts in groups may therefore be perceived as less communal, thus subsequently lowering their status in the eyes of other group members compared with women with lower-status network contacts. Studies 1–4, across cross-sectional, longitudinal, and experimental designs, support our model. Study 5 suggests that signaling a group-oriented goal may mitigate the interpersonal, social perceptual costs of instrumental ties to high-status network contacts for women. The effect of ties with high-status network contacts for men is relatively inconsistent. This research reveals a potential social-network dilemma for women: Instrumental ties to high-status network contacts in groups and organizations are necessary for success and should be encouraged, yet they may also create an extra social perceptual hurdle for women. Organizations need to investigate social and structural solutions that harness the benefits of high-status network contacts for women, while minimizing any potential social perceptual costs.nationalaffairs.com, 4d ago
Second, Vallstrom argues how biological evolution emphasizes "fitness," where species continue to evolve to adapt to (and fill niches) in their environment. This does not necessarily favor very fast reproduction, which can be maladaptive when numbers outstrip resources. Third, there are cultural evolution and other changes to consider, as exemplified by human fertility rates. "[T]he number of births peaked in 2012 and is projected to continue to get smaller," he writes, "hence the number of children peaked in 2017 and is projected to continue to get smaller, and (hence) human population is projected to decrease within a few generations."...phys.org, 4d ago
These trials focus on its effectiveness against respiratory tract inflammation from the influenza virus. This news marks a significant milestone for the Vietnamese medical sector, especially in setting a trend in global research and application of spore probiotics for respiratory well-being. Using a nasal spray with Bacillus probiotics in treating influenza patients has significantly reduced the total treatment time by up to 60 per cent (from five days for the control group to just two days for the spore probiotics spray group). Additionally, it increased treatment efficacy by 58 per cent, aiding in the complete recovery from symptoms such as runny nose, fever, sneezing, cough, rapid heartbeat, and rapid breathing. The decline in clinical symptoms corresponds with a drop in both viral and bacterial counts, notably decreasing by approximately 400 and 1,000 times on the second treatment day compared to the initial day of hospitalisation. The clinical trials confirm that the nasal spray containing Bacillus probiotics reduces treatment duration, lowering the chances of bacterial infection or severe respiratory tract complications. This not only helps cut treatment costs but also reduces antibiotic consumption for infections, fostering improved patient health. This positive signal is crucial for the medical community as it contributes to easing the burden on hospitals during disease outbreaks. Furthermore, the clinical trials indicate that the Bacillus probiotics, when formulated as a spray, offer superior effectiveness through interaction with the mucosal immune system of the nasal cavity. This means that the spore probiotics nasal spray not only supports the treatment of influenza-infected patients but also aids in treating respiratory tract inflammation caused by other viruses such as RSV, adenovirus, rhinovirus, coronavirus, etc. Regular use of Bacillus probiotics spray proves beneficial in enhancing the respiratory barrier, thereby boosting the effectiveness of virus-prevention vaccines. Probiotics, also known as a type of medicinal probiotics, serve as an effective solution in alleviating symptoms of respiratory diseases. In a previous study published in the Scientific Reports - Nature journal in July 2022, LiveSpo Navax supported the treatment of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in children. It significantly reduced the treatment time by more than one day and lowered the RSV concentration by over 600 times, surpassing the effectiveness of using physiological saline. This scientific research ranked among the top 100 downloaded microbiology articles in 2022 in the Nature Journal, demonstrating the widespread interest from scientists and readers worldwide and contributing significant values to the community. The two internationally validated clinical studies have confirmed that the LiveSpo Navax nasal spray, containing Bacillus probiotics, has demonstrated no side effects, guaranteeing complete safety for children. All patients using LiveSpo Navax in conjunction with standard treatment medications showed no signs of local bacterial infection or any digestive issues like vomiting, diarrhoea, or other abnormal symptoms. Therefore, in the future, this product will be fully suitable for inclusion in treatment plans for patients infected with respiratory viruses or bacteria. Dr. Nguyen Hoa Anh, Director of the Spore Probiotics Research Center shared: "We are proud to offer an effective support solution for patients with respiratory infections caused by viruses, bacteria, or acute inflammation. Moving forward, we will continue to research, develop, and bring the LiveSpo Navax product to consumers in Viet Nam and globally." With groundbreaking technology in spore probiotics - medicinal probiotics, LiveSpo Pharma aims to build a future free of antibiotics for everyone. Dang Quoc Hung, CEO of LiveSpo Pharma, stated: "At LiveSpo, we always strive to deliver the best products to our customers and the community. With the expertise of our scientific team, who have achieved notable research milestones in microbiology domestically and internationally, we are confident in developing and manufacturing effective and convenient spore probiotic products without side effects. This effort contributes to reducing antibiotic use and minimising antibiotic resistance in Viet Nam and the world. This is also LiveSpo's mission for development." As confirmed by the two successful publications in the prestigious Scientific Reports - Nature journal, LiveSpo has asserted its breakthrough in the products resulting from the company's extensive research and development efforts. LiveSpo takes pride in introducing Viet Nam's spore probiotics technology to the markets of developed countries which spearhead global medical advancements. This groundwork sets the stage for the future growth of Vietnamese enterprises, emphasising the expansion into global markets and the international promotion of Vietnamese brands and products. With a focus on product development, LiveSpo aims to create value for the community. The company's successful development of the Bacillus probiotics spray, which effectively aids respiratory disease treatment and minimises the risk of severe inflammation and prolonged antibiotic use, is helping pave the way toward a future less reliant on antibiotics. With its nature as a type of medical probiotic, LiveSpo products will help strengthen the natural immune barrier for the body when used over an extended period, thereby contributing to a community immune system if widely applied. This serves as a natural shield, protecting the community from diseases caused by viruses and bacteria. Hashtag: #Livespo...SME Business Daily Media, 4d ago

In a society that often dismisses ‘agberos’ as mere nuisances, it is essential to recognise that these individuals are products of their environment, shaped by the harsh realities of a country grappling with unemployment and economic instability. Their stories reflect the larger crisis of youth unemployment in Nigeria and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions that empower the country’s young population, rather than forcing them into the margins of society. These untold stories provide a poignant reminder of the untapped potential that could drive the nation’s progress and prosperity if given the opportunity. The Guardian Nigeria News - Nigeria and World News, 29d ago
Rapprochement is in the long-term interests of both countries. For Russia, its demographic crisis will be exacerbated by the war as more of its young men come home in coffins. With fewer young men comes fewer workers, leading to economic stagnation and recession, worsened by global sanctions. Rapprochement could mean the difference between further stagnation and sustainable demographic and economic growth. For the U.S., rapprochement with Russia can help ease demand on a country with limited military and diplomatic resources. It can allow the U.S. to finally accomplish its pivot towards Asia, a wishful goal since the early 2010s. And rapprochement may prevent a formal Sino-Russian alliance, which would both be a geopolitical disaster for the U.S. and push the world towards a third global catastrophe.American Security Project, 26d ago
Sound can also be an important tool to mobilize environmental action. But a weakening link with nature may hamper this – with the soundscapes, we risk losing not only a holistic understanding of our ecological surroundings but also our place in it. “We live embedded in systems designed to turn our attentions away from the voices of the living Earth, inward toward the human,” wrote David George Haskell. Changing soundscapes are then records of our changing relationship with our natural surroundings. “The sonic crisis extends from the global scale of continents and ocean basins, right down to the individual scale of singing birds and human city dwellers. At all these scales we have a crisis of inattention. “Not listening” is a form of sonic loss.” What we’re witnessing is an “extinction of experience” in Butler’s worlds, where not only the quantity of time spent in nature is reducing but also the quality of the natural soundscape itself.theswaddle.com, 8d ago
In recent years, the sustainability of livestock production has gained significant attention. The microbiome has become a valuable target for products that aim to improve animal production sustainability, to drive both sustainability and productivity at the same time. The study of the microbial populations that inhabit animals is central to animal microbiome research, which aims to establish their function in health, disease, and development. The animal microbiome is critical for gastrointestinal health, immunological function, and digesting. In poultry, the gastrointestinal tract contains 70% of immune cells, emphasizing the importance of the gut for general health. In addition to animal health, the gut microbiome also impacts productivity and microbiological safety. The market growth can be credited to the increased need to identify, treat, and reduce diseases in livestock and companion animals and the increasing pet population. The market is rising rapidly due to increased pet ownership and raising livestock population over the last year. Dietary supplements that promote immunological health have gained popularity in recent years. Increased pet spending, resulting in a demand for safe and nutritional items to help pets stay healthy, is expected to augment the need for the animal microbiome. Increased focus on animal health innovation has resulted in several bolstering industry growth prospects. The market growth is also accounted for technological advancements in the animal microbiome, such as the advent of microbiome DNA sequencing, including state-of-the-art bioinformatic analysis. Augmented demand for meat and meat products, increased concern towards antibiotic resistance to improve gut health, and the rising importance of protein-rich diets is further likely to support the market growth during the forecast period. Enquiry Before Buying: https://www.insightaceanalytic.com/enquiry-before-buying/1046According to Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 56% of dogs and 60% of cats were overweight or obese in 2018. Extra weight in pets may show to conditions such as high blood pressure, difficulty breathing, arthritis, joint health matters, as well as a weakened immune system. Key companies focus on product development such as early detection and predictive microbiome-based modes to provide more effective methods for managing chronic diseases in animals. For instance, In May 2021, Gnubiotics Sciences SA announced the allowance patent of microbiome markers for identifying, predicting, and treating pet obesity from the European Patent Office. The crucial point is that we have to try to shift to values and ways that enable all to live well on a very small fraction of the per capita resource and environmental impacts we in rich countries have now. We cannot achieve a sustainable way of life which all could share unless there is an enormous degrowth transition to far simpler lifestyles and systems. Over many years I have put forward such a vision, labelled The Simpler Way, and introduced visiting groups to it at Pigface Point. Following is an outline, and some thoughts on how it might be achieved.resilience, 28d ago

The scaling of organ growth relative to body growth during development is known as ontogenetic allometry. For most animal species, allometric growth of organs follows a power law (Huxley and Teissier, 1936), such that logarithmic transformation of the organ and body size measurements fits a linear relationship (Fig. 1F). When the organ grows at the same rate as the body, it exhibits isometric growth (Huxley and Teissier, 1936). When the organ grows at a faster or slower rate than the body, it has positive or negative allometric growth, respectively (Fig. 1F). Allometric organ growth in holometabolous insects such as Drosophila presents a special problem arising from the fact that many adult organs derive from the imaginal discs, which are non-functional in larvae. For this reason, there are fewer constraints on relative scaling, and allometric growth is freer to deviate from simple scaling laws. For example, in the silkworm, its wing disc grows linearly with its body while the larva feeds, but then continues its linear growth after larvae have ceased feeding (Williams, 1980). Thus, its allometric growth has two linear phases; the first is isometric and the second is positively allometric.elifesciences.org, 4d ago
The article by Denis Pereira Gray and colleagues extolling the virtues of continuity of care in General Practice is timely and crucial to the very survival of General Practice. Arguably the three attributes of General Practice which have contributed to its inherent value are continuity of care, ease of access and gate keeping. All three have suffered in recent years because of the workforce crisis, part-time working and the emergence of numerous alternative routes for patients into the broader health system. Once continuity of care disappears, as it has done in many Practices, the future of General Practice itself will be called into question. Long term conditions are increasingly managed by well trained nurses who could be employed by an Acute Trust; cohorts such as care of the elderly and palliative patients can be managed by MDTs with no need for a traditional GP at their centre and ’same day access’ is fast being devolved to Urgent Care Centres, 111 or private firms. The BMJ, 4d ago
One potential outcome of inflation and currency reforms could involve a widespread movement toward alternative forms of currency like cryptocurrencies due to their superior control over inflationary pressures. Governments, central banks, and the general population must stay informed and adaptive, ensuring that the global economy and financial systems can keep pace with these changes and potential long-term effects.Grit Daily News, 5d ago
Some regions are already paying the price for U.S. military pollution, which is nearly always the result of weapons testing, military “readiness,” or strategic positioning. Since 1971, the military has hosted “war games” off the coast of the Hawaiian islands — an attempt, as Prism has reported, to “strengthen international cooperation and American sovereignty.” On Guam, a territory of the U.S., the military owns 49,000 acres of land, or about a third of the island. In 2021, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to provide compensation to those who suffered harm from nuclear bomb testing fallout from 1944 through 1962 — the legislation never even got a vote in either body. Even now, the military operates with effective free rein on the island, clearing native limestone forests and dredging coral reefs, which pose grave environmental concerns in the near future and signal an alarming trend in military buildup that, in the long term, demonstrates there is no claim to Indigenous sovereignty the U.S. government won’t ignore.Truthout, 5d ago
From media headlines, most people believe that markets foster crime. In fact, markets cut crime: ‘Historians combing the archives of medieval European towns estimate an annual homicide rate of about 50 per 100,000 residents. … and by the time of the great market takeover it was below 10 per 100,000. By around 1880, the annual homicide rate in London was less than 2 per 100,000 and headed lower. … Markets also broaden social webs, strengthen bonds, and foster moral behavior. So the market takeover transforms the moral system’ (Friedman & McNeill 2013, p.160-1). One important channel through which markets reduce crimes is by increasing per-capita incomes (the section on “Efficiency of Market Exchange” on p.6), making people having less need to commit crimes and face higher costs of doing so. In addition, see the old doux- commerce thesis on the civilizing effects (making people gentle, honest and peaceful) of market relations which increase morality and reduce crimes (e.g. Hirschman 1982, 2013). Berggren & Nilsson (2013) and Prasad (2012) also argue that economic freedom, trade openness and the removal of controls in particular, fosters tolerance and reduce violent crime. Zak (2011) argues that, not only is moral behavior necessary for the proper functioning of markets, but markets also strengthen moral values.Open Access Government, 5d ago
To win the race to net-zero, the world must invest wisely and identify areas for cost reduction. For instance, less than half of green investments are currently made in developing economies mostly due to greater risks and stricter public budget constraints for energy transition projects. However, to reach net-zero, nearly three-quarters of green investments (70%) would need to be made in developing economies by 2030 as these nations look to new, sustainable infrastructures and technologies.GlobalFinTechSeries, 5d ago

You Can Purchase Complete Report @ https://www.coherentmarketinsights.com/insight/buy-now/2157✦ Ammonia Market Drivers: Increasing Demand For Ammonia In Agricultural SectorThe demand for ammonia is increasing at a rapid pace in the agricultural sector primarily used in the production of nitrogen fertilizers. Ammonia plays a vital role in boosting crop yields by providing essential nitrogen to plants. With the growing global population, there is rising pressure on farmers to produce higher crop yields to meet the increasing food demand. This is one of the key factors propelling the ammonia market growth. According to recent estimates, over 80% of the worldwide ammonia production is consumed in the agricultural industry for fertilizer manufacturing. The farms and crop lands across major agricultural hubs like North America, Asia Pacific and Europe are expanding at a fast rate to fulfill rising global food requirements. As a result, the consumption of nitrogen fertilizers containing ammonia is escalating noticeably.✦ Ammonia Market Drivers: Growing Use Of Ammonia In Industrial ApplicationsBesides agriculture, ammonia also finds myriad applications across different industries like textiles, rubber, plastics, paper, explosives etc. It acts as an important building block and intermediate for manufacturing numerous commodity and specialty chemicals. Ammonia is extensively used in the production of nitric acid, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate and other nitrogen products which then go into making dyes, explosives, pharmaceuticals and other industrial goods. Expanding industrial sector globally has boosted the demand for ammonia over the recent years. Moreover, many industries in emerging economies are augmenting their manufacturing capacities which is amplifying ammonia consumption. For example, China has emerged as a major ammonia consumer owing to rapid industrialization and urbanization activities. This growth in industrial applications is another pivotal driver propelling the global ammonia industry forward.✦ Ammonia Market Restrain: Stringent Environmental RegulationsOne of the major challenges impeding the ammonia market expansion is the increasingly stringent environmental regulations imposed by various government agencies regarding ammonia emissions. Ammonia is considered a toxic substance and improper handling during production and transportation can discharge harmful ammonia fumes in the air. Extended exposure to ammonia gas can cause severe health issues in humans as well as damage crops and natural ecosystems. Thus, several regulatory bodies worldwide are enforcing strict norms to curb ammonia leaks and minimize environmental pollution. This has increased compliance costs for ammonia manufacturers. Additionally, regulatory hurdles also affect the adoption of ammonia as fuel. Complying with evolving emissions standards can limit future ammonia market growth to some degree.✦ Ammonia Market Opportunity: Rising Adoption Of Ammonia As Marine FuelThe burgeoning opportunity for ammonia producers lies in leveraging ammonia as a carbon neutral marine fuel. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a target to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from ships by 40% (compared to 2008 levels) by 2030 and aims to cut emissions in half by 2050. This goal has triggered intense R&D towards developing and commercializing carbon neutral fuels to replace conventional bunker fuels used in ships. Ammonia, owing to its hydrogen carrying properties, is regarded as one of the most viable clean marine fuel options with zero carbon emissions. Many global ports and maritime authorities are investing heavily in building ammonia infrastructure and developing ammonia-fueled vessels. This opens up new avenues for ammonia companies to expand their footprint in the shipping and marine transportation industry.✦ Ammonia Market Trends: Growing Focus on Renewable Ammonia ProductionOne of the major trends gaining traction in the ammonia sector is use of renewable energy sources like solar, wind and hydro for green ammonia production. Growing climate change concerns are propelling investments towards lowering the carbon footprint of ammonia manufacturing. Major industry players are collaborating with research institutes and renewable energy companies to develop carbon-free ammonia synthesis technologies. For instance, Yara International - one of the leading ammonia producers - has ongoing projects to produce carbon-free ammonia using offshore wind power in Norway. Simiarly, other companies are exploring generating ammonia from renewable hydrogen. This shift towards eco-friendly ammonia production aligned with sustainability goals will be a defining trend shaping the future course of the ammonia industry.Key Questions:• Who are the key market players?...openPR.com, 12d ago
Along with pressures facing MFES to accommodate evolving legislation that tramples on city planning, an assessment of indoor recreation facility needs was conducted “to identify gaps in areas related to future growth or existing developed areas.” The recreation draft plan lays out several priority projects which include constructing a new community centre in Cooksville where the majority of population growth over the next 10 years is expected to occur and the “City can expect greater pressures for recreation facilities, programs and service.” The draft plan also prioritizes redeveloping the north section of the Small Arms Inspection Building in Ward 1 and focusing on the redevelopment of the aging Mississauga Valley Community Centre to respond to the population growth expected in the downtown area. The Pointer, 25d ago
At the same time, a large piece of yet-to-be-integrated thinking in Laudate Deum and other Catholic documents dealing with development is a comprehensive discussion of population. Catholic documents can be relied on—and should be credited for—speaking up in defense of marginalized peoples and ensuring that population discussions do not become lightly veiled opportunities to bash poor communities of color in the Global South. Catholic leaders make this point regularly. They also rightly point to excessive consumption in wealthy nations as a major cause of environmental destruction. But these arguments do not cover the entire range of population questions. Carrying capacity matters, too.resilience, 26d ago
