A lot of what has been done in that field, which is general the field of synthetic morphogenesis, has so far relied on insertion of genetic circuits, which in and of itself is a really exciting area, because then we get to test our hypotheses about how form develops in nature in very sort of organized way. For example, like a really good example of that is, Alan Turing had this hypothesis for how certain paths or patterns arise in nature called Turing patterns. He had a mathematical theory about this, but he's not a biologist, so he never really got to prove this. And a few years ago, scientists took Alan Turing's mathematical theorem and basically created a genetic circuit out of that. So genetic circuits are very similar to electrical circuits. Instead of transistors, you just have genes interacting with one another and creating complex Boolean logic. So they encapsulated Turing's theory into the strength of circuit and put it into living cells to bacterial cells. And bacterial cells did indeed create these patterns that are known as training patterns. So without the strength ik circuit approach, we would have no way of testing this. So that's a really versatile and really interesting way to approach. But that dictates the use of exogenous DNA, so that essentially Crescentic modified organisms. So one of the questions we asked is, could we bring the synthetic morphogenesis design of creating new structures with biological cells, without using any genes and into robots, again, is an example of that, we have only changed the environmental parameters and how we grow these I mean, that's five years, we've started from tracheal cells, because we want to make mo tiles spheroids. And, you know, tracheal, cells already know how to build cilia, you don't need an exogenous genes or circuits to teach them how to do it. And by just growing them in different conditions, we're able to steer the entire system towards our target architecture of interest. And that's how we accomplished this kind of synthetic morphology. So that lack of genetic circuitry is makes it is one of the big features that make it inherently safe. Because if we want to create an answer robot from a given patient, we would just take the cells from that patient and build the answer robots that way. And at the end, that answer about would have the exact same DNA as the patient. And when we inject it into the patient, it wouldn't be any different than the existing cells in that patient's body. So this is a big win for potentially preventing any type of inflammation in the body or immune response. So that's our sort of safety gear number one. And number two, is the fact that answer robots after some time on naturally degrade. So even if you just, you know, let them live forever, they don't. And the way they degrade is by becoming individual cells. So in the lab, and let's just by becoming individual cells, so the multicellular and robot will just degrade into individual cells, which can just be then sort of, depending on the tissue that it's inoculated can be expelled from the body through natural bass. Increasing municipal collection ( "Bins for All!") and community composting efforts and expanding options for home composting and for renters were all mentioned as options to increase access as was the development of a compost (service) directory. Regardless of how access to composting services was increased it should be affordable as “[you] shouldn't have to pay to do right thing.” Opportunities to utilize more appropriate technology abound including using AI for sorting to reduce contamination, developing rat-proof bins (for collection and home composting), using biodigesters, and perhaps creating a new type of facility to handle (plastic-based) ‘compostable’ (biodegradable) serve-ware. To support the development of infrastructure opportunities incentives such as "raising landfill tipping fees [or creating a] methane tax on private LF owners" and funding such as the "potential to pursue Federal funding to pilot creative programs" are critical. Increasing collaboration and coordination is also an opportunity to develop infrastructure with at least one participant wondering, “ Where is regional planning org? (e.g. CMAP)” and now is the time to increase collaboration because "passion exists among food producers in the region who need soil!!" Rather than looking to individual households for new sources of materials to make compost, restaurants, breweries, and landscapers and other large food waste generators could be better engaged and plugged in to composting perhaps driving or at least raising awareness of the issue for individual households. There may exist a scalar mismatch in the region for compost— demand by individual consumers may be too small to justify the amount of effort it takes to create the compost so there needs to be "more emphasis on getting more finished compost to market." Other opportunities to increase demand for the finished product and access to services include passing Right to Compost legislation “so that building managers and landlords don't stand in the way" of their residents using compost pick up services; instituting bans and creating incentives and/or disincentives such as increasing landfill tipping fees ; and incentivizing compost usage by farmers and public works. This is important because many biological structures, such as cells, capillaries, and wrinkles on cell surfaces, are also very small.Microscale helical microswimmers are promising tools for biomedical applications, such as drug delivery and targeted therapy. Aidan Thorn, business development manager of marine robotics at Sonardyne, provided an update on what it has meant to see multiple unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) launched from the E/V Nautilus. The Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI) hosted the Multivehicle Exploration expedition with the concept of operating three platforms together, one USV and two AUVs. The University of New Hampshire's USV DriX, the University of Rhode Island’s Deep Autonomous Profile (DAP), and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Mesobot were all the coordinated underwater tools on the 18-day mission. DriX, DAP, and Mesobot were able to explore the entire water column, beginning on the seafloor around the Geologists Seamounts south of the Main Hawaiian Islands. Deploying a single UUV from a ship can be time-consuming and expensive, and it limits the amount of data that can be collected. Even where multiUUVs can be accommodated, typically only one is deployed at a time due to the complexity. As unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) become more advanced, they can be used as "remote shepherds" to control UUVs. This means UUV operations can be conducted without a mothership, opening new possibilities for multiple autonomous tools. “The Sonardyne ROS driver was a key component used with Project 11 on DriX, which provided situational awareness, command, and control during the project,” Thorn explained. “Many different institutions gathered on board and witnessed both vehicles working together and communicating mapping and camera data via DriX's acoustic relay. In real time they could see the vehicles speak the same language.” DriX used a broadband link to communicate with the ship and a Sonardyne USBL solution to communicate and provide navigation data to the AUVs. Fugro's remote operations capabilities are another example of this technology. They have fit its USVs with Sonardyne USBL, allowing them to position UUVs for missions. Most recently, Fugro fitted its UUV with Sonardyne's Sprint-Nav Mini to support MBES surveys. This has opened up numerous opportunities. “The Sprint-Nav Mini is the smallest of its kind and can provide reliable surface and subsea vehicle guidance and navigation when you’re tight on space,” Thorn said. Collectively, the multivehicle explorations surveyed midwater ecosystems associated with seamounts and gained new important information on the spatial and temporal dynamics of these largely unstudied ecosystems. Overall, for the pharma industry, I see two important things for us. One is automation. At the site level, there may be less roles available – for the last 20 years, inflation has outpaced salaries for the manufacturing side of the industry. What’s happened then is we have gotten away with robotics, automation, and continuous manufacturing to meet operational standards, while throwing people where we need them in the moment. But we haven’t looked at how we can improve these processes efficiently. Octopuses can whip their soft arms with a characteristic “bend propagation” motion to capture prey with sensitive suckers. This relatively simple strategy provides models for robotic grasping, controllable with a small number of inputs, and a highly deformable arm with sensing capabilities. Here, we implemented an electronics-integrated soft robotic octopus arm (E-SOAM) capable of reaching, sensing, grasping, and interacting in a large domain. On the basis of the biological bend propagation of octopuses, E-SOAM uses a bending-elongation propagation model to move, reach, and grasp in a simple but efficient way. E-SOAM’s distal part plays the role of a gripper and can process bending, suction, and temperature sensory information under highly deformed working states by integrating a stretchable, liquid-metal–based electronic circuit that can withstand uniaxial stretching of 710% and biaxial stretching of 270% to autonomously perform tasks in a confined environment. By combining this sensorized distal part with a soft arm, the E-SOAM can perform a reaching-grasping-withdrawing motion across range up to 1.5 times its original arm length, similar to the biological counterpart. Through a wearable finger glove that produces suction sensations, a human can use just one finger to remotely and interactively control the robot’s in-plane and out-of- plane reaching and grasping both in air and underwater. I agree with this post - like Eliezer says, it's unlikely that the battle of AI vs humanity would come in the form of humanoid robots vs humans like in Terminator, more likely it would be far more boring and subtle. I also think that one of the key vectors of attack for an AI is the psychological fallibility of humans. An AI that is really good at pattern recognition (i.e. most AIs) would probably have little issue with finding out your vulnerabilities just from observing your behavior or even your social media posts. You could probably figure out whether someone is highly empathetic (vulnerable to emotional blackmail) or low-IQ (vulnerable to trickery) pretty easily by reading their writing. There are already examples of programmers who fell in love with AI and were ready to do its bidding.
