new Breaking down silos is only possible when leaders focus on cross-functional collaboration, particular in response to organisational change. Building a strong, collective approach to people development is a key way to make this a reality – ensuring employees are adequately prepared for any changes that come their way by working together with new colleagues and developing an understanding of each person’s unique skill set. Even amid organisational shifts, such as the adoption of generative AI, setting a firm foundation for effective collaboration will help a business move through any challenging periods with agility. The European Business Review, 17h ago
new In a complex environment where the development of pharmaceuticals involves a myriad of stakeholders, Eyram introduces a radical concept: "Ecosystem Intelligence." This idea stems from the recognition that the biotech ecosystem is a web of interconnected players—from researchers and startups to investors and pharmaceutical giants. However, the challenge has always been in effectively connecting these diverse stakeholders. They need not only to find each other but also to communicate in a way that resonates with the other party and to understand how one another's needs align. This is where Probatech steps in, with the ambition to make Ecosystem Intelligence a norm within the industry. Eyram emphasizes that "we live in the information age, and access to information and how you use it are increasingly important drivers of success in this industry."...Science Times, 16h ago
new Job redesign is another important step that should be taken to improve the knowledge-sharing process in organizations. Job design prevents employees from inadvertently hoarding knowledge and thus not sharing it. [19] [20] We use a model of “forced sharing of knowledge.” With this model, we ask participants to share two sets of knowledge that they have to meet the needs of the other employee’s clients. Whether spot-on or wrong, the employee decoding the suggestions can only say thank you. This develops into an interesting conversation when at the end of the discussion we ask what worked about this process. Fruitful advice was given to many employees from their colleagues and the majority felt engaged in the exercise. As we expected in a follow-up session with the leaders, some job advice can lead to the widespread sharing of knowledge in organizations and help people that did not feel they needed or even wanted help. Thus, this led to the redesign of jobs and developed into a cohesive flow of knowledge between them. Realizing the importance of knowledge in organizational success and motivating people to share knowledge offers a fresh appellation to innovation and creativity throughout the organization. The European Business Review, 1d ago
new But even as PublicSquare presents itself as a safe haven to customers, it’s not clear that businesses have to necessarily do much to join the platform. According to The Washington Post, to qualify, a company must be a small or medium-size business that “affirms” the platform’s five core values. (The company also “prioritizes” business with products made in America, but it’s unclear how.) Many of those values seem to impose few, if any, burdens on the ways companies conduct themselves. Instead, they are merely vague statements like, “We believe in the greatness of this Nation and will always fight to defend it.” The most pointed one, which hints at gender traditionalism and anti-abortion stances, goes: “We will always protect the family unit and celebrate the sanctity of every life.” But it’s unclear whether there’s any enforcement mechanism other than consumer backlash against companies on PublicSquare that embrace anything that can be spun as “woke.”...MSNBC.com, 1d ago
new According to Dr K. Hariprasad, president, hospitals division, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd, AI in health care is a multifaceted issue. There are many challenges and limitations in building clinical AI solutions that can have real impact on health care. “The requirements and preferences of end users, including physicians, patients and policymakers are not always met by AI solutions,”he says. “Low adoption rates and ineffective solutions may arise from this. There is frequently a lack of integration between AI solutions and the current workflows, standards, and health care systems. This may limit the impact of AI solutions and create implementation barriers.”...theweek.in, 1d ago

new TG/CR: With but a few exceptions, we have worked with each of the contributors over the years. Many of them are well known leaders in their respective fields.1 Others are early career scientists and explorers who we believe represent the next generation of leaders in their fields. One of the most exciting developments we have witnessed has been the changing face of exploration. Today’s explorers come from more diverse backgrounds, geographies, ethnicities and disciplines. They bring with them different perspectives and approaches that will undoubtedly lead to a richer understanding of our planet. One of the main pillars of the GDPR is Data Minimization. It highlights the prudent gathering and use of personal data. Organizations are advised to avoid collecting unnecessary data and to only collect the information that is absolutely necessary for the stated purpose. By encouraging a targeted approach, this idea reduces the possibility of managing too much data. This further reduces the potential security risks.Security Boulevard, 17d ago
In parallel, strategies to strengthen circular economy systems have received growing attention in recent years. The environmental and economic benefits are manifold: they ensure sound environmental management of waste flows; recover materials that can be substituted for virgin ones, thus alleviating the pressure on resource extraction and lowering the overall environmental impact of value chains; and reduce supply risks and price volatility of raw materials. International circular economy networks offer further advantages, such as the development of economies of scale for waste treatment, waste management technologies, and an outlet for recycled materials (Egger and Keuschnigg 2023, Kojima 2020).CEPR, 10d ago

Connect workers to training and workforce development programs. The prevalence of green jobs that do not require an associate’s or bachelor’s degree means that regional and state leaders can build a workforce training ecosystem. These kinds of programs remain few and far between, and there is a need to find ways to greatly scale their reach. Regions and states can work together to create “talent marketplaces” that allow employers in search of skilled workers to subsidize such programs and help build the talent pipelines they will draw from. The Louisiana Green Corps, for instance, provides training programs to job-seekers in the greater New Orleans area. The programs offer general career readiness preparation as well as skills training specific to green industries. They also connect workers to paid internships and on-the-job training with partner organizations. Those who participate in the programs can pursue careers in construction, stormwater management, energy efficiency, solar installation and weatherization.Target training efforts for workers. In a sad but not surprising irony, research shows that members of the populations disproportionately affected by climate change — including Black and Latino workers, people from low-income backgrounds and residents of rural communities — are also underrepresented in the green workforce. To ensure the workers who stand to benefit the most from these economic opportunities are not excluded, regions and states should place equity at the center of the training initiatives they invest in.Texas-based Interplay Learning, for example, is partnering with community colleges to create online virtual reality training that allows workers in rural communities to access low-cost, hands-on education in fields like solar energy. And through its partnership with New York City, the training provider BlocPower focuses on Black and brown workers from low-income communities and neighborhoods most affected by gun violence. With a waitlist of 600 people, the program is demonstrating just how quickly demand is growing for these kinds of trainings and the importance of expanding access.Augment training with complementary services. Ensuring that disadvantaged workers can complete programs and transition into new careers will also require investments in wraparound services and resources. A lack of reliable transportation or child care can create insurmountable barriers that will stymie any efforts to create an equitable green workforce. If workers are struggling to have their basic needs met during their training, they are far less likely to succeed.Fortunately, several providers are now offering this kind of support alongside their training programs. The Green Door Initiative in Detroit offers literacy support and budgeting, time management and personal finance training. Portland, Ore.’s PGE Project Zero covers participants’ Uber rides. The Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator helps its participants who are experiencing housing insecurity find lodging. The move to a green economy is well underway. Like any industrial shift, there stand to be people who benefit and those who don’t. Addressing the many factors that impact a worker’s ability to pursue and complete training for the jobs created by this burgeoning economy will require significant public investments. But by making these investments now, policymakers and business leaders can build a green workforce that leaves no worker behind.Taj Ahmad Eldridge is the director of climate innovation at JFFLabs, the innovation laboratory of Jobs for the Future, and the author of a new market scan that looks at the programs specifically designed to train new and incumbent workers for green jobs. JFF, a national nonprofit, works with corporations, entrepreneurs and institutions to spur transformation of workforce and education systems to create economic advancement opportunities.Governing, 25d ago
In conclusion, I amplify four anti–plastic pollution hashtag trends that have critically interrupted the rise of hegemonic plastic propaganda through networked cultures of care. First, there has been increased calls for regulation of #Greenwashing to start to hold corporations—from oil companies to the beverage industry—accountable for when they claim to be “green,” but actually are promoting and enacting practices that actually harm the planet. Second, #BreakFreeFromPlastic Coalition’s annual #BrandAudit has begun collecting waste on our coastlines globally to hold corporations accountable in the court of public opinion for the entire lifecycle of their products. Third, there has been a global movement to imagine a world #BeyondPlastics/ #ÈtèSansPlastique/#SinPlástico through which, I suggest, we might recall “every person is necessary, every plastic is not.” This trend not only suggests new ideas, but also recovers traditions and local solidarity economies through which we can once again live with less plastic. And, finally, there is #Tortuga—a shorthand for the many movements to resist marine life endangerment as a way of recovering the value of radical relationality. As our species’ hubris appears unsustainable, it is compelling to consider how some are (re)connecting with nonhuman kin.UC Press Blog, 28d ago

new EDUCATIONAL opportunities were focused on capturing the attention of youth via classroom education on specific topics such as climate change, composting, food waste, and gardening. It was also suggested to make food waste separation in educational institution’s the norm rather than the exception so that "…young people grow up with the practice." Some commentors mentioned the importance of educating school staff and obtaining buy in as a first step in youth education and there should be "funding to hire a dedicated sustainability position in schools!" The need for increased adult education was also recognized by attendees. Suggestions centered on creating a public marketing campaign, making sure materials were available in languages other than English , and focused on specific topics such as compost usage, benefits of compost, how to compost, who’s it for, soil health, and what services are currently available. The conversation around who’s it for prompted comments such as the need for "education state/city wide that dispels notion of composting is only for SOME people" Educational programs could be expanded to include field trips , demonstrations, and build-a-bin-workshops with increased community-based delivery in gardens, libraries, and schools with updated visual materials . Educational efforts could also be developed for the businesses side of composting such as case studies showing models that work and disseminating the idea that composting can create jobs in particular for youth and be an economic development opportunity for communities. new Oakland residents are angry. One by one, business owners, community organizers, church leaders, and teenagers have stood at town halls and City Council meetings this year with an alarming message: They no longer feel safe anywhere in their city — at any time.“It’s not just a small number of people in the evening or nighttime. This is all hours, day and night,” said Noha Aboelata, founder of the Roots Community Health Center in Oakland. “Someone’s over here pushing a stroller and someone’s getting shot right next to them.”One morning in early April, automatic gunfire erupted outside a Roots clinic. Patients and staff members dropped to the ground and took cover. After the shooting stopped, medical assistants and a doctor gave first aid to a man in his 20s who had been shot six times.Everyone is blaming someone or something else for the bloodshed.Business owners have had enough. In September, Target announced it would close nine stores in four states, including in Oakland because of organized retail theft; the famed Vietnamese restaurant Le Cheval shut its doors after 38 years, partly blaming car break-ins and other criminal activity for depressing its business; and more than 200 business owners staged an hours-long strike to protest the rise in crime. The leadership of the local NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization, made headlines this summer when it said Oakland was seeing a “heyday” for criminals, and pointed to the area’s “failed leadership” and “movement to defund the police.”“It feels like there’s a dark cloud over Oakland,” said Cynthia Adams, head of the local chapter, which has called on the city to hire 250 more police officers.Price, a progressive elected last year, already faces a recall effort, in part because she rejects blanket enhanced sentences for gangs and weapons charges, and has declined to charge youths as adults. The new mayor, Sheng Thao, was criticized for firing the police chief for misconduct and breaking a campaign promise to double funding at the city’s Department of Violence Prevention. In her first State of the City address last month, Thao described the surge in crime as “totally and completely unacceptable,” and acknowledged that Oaklanders are hurting and scared. She said the city has expanded police foot patrols and funded six new police academies, as well as boosted funding for violence prevention and affordable housing.“Not a day goes by where I don’t wish I could just wave a magic wand and silence the gunfire,” Thao said. Many in the community, including Valadez-Rios, advocate for broader investment in Oakland’s poorest neighborhoods over more law enforcement.City councils, states, and the federal government are putting their faith in violence prevention programs, in some cases bankrolling them from nontraditional sources, such as the state-federal Medicaid health insurance program for low-income people.Last month, California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom approved an 11 percent state tax on guns and ammunition, and $75 million of the revenue annually is expected to go to violence prevention programs.Although these programs are growing in popularity, it is unclear how successful they are. In some cases, proven programs that involve law enforcement, such as Ceasefire, were cut back or shelved after George Floyd was murdered, said Abt, the Maryland researcher.“The intense opposition to law enforcement means that the city was unwilling to use a portion of the tools that have been proven,” Abt said. “It’s good to work on preventing youth violence, but the vast majority of serious violence is perpetrated by adults.”Not a day goes by where I don’t wish I could just wave a magic wand and silence the gunfire.Governing, 2d ago

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and exacerbated existing health challenges across the globe, demonstrating the need for resilient health systems to address communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). NCDs represent the greatest challenge facing health systems globally, projected to account for 75 percent of all deaths by 2030. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the proportion is even higher, with research suggesting that the top four NCDs alone—cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes—will account for 81 percent of all deaths by 2030. While physical ailments are the most commonly recognized NCDs, mental health conditions are increasingly acknowledged as a significant portion of the global NCD burden. Mental illness, neurological disorders, substance abuse, and suicide (MNSS) levy an immense, often undercounted, cost to people’s health. Measured in years lived with a disability (YLDs), mental illness is responsible for nearly one-third of all disability globally, and yet the 194 World Health Organization (WHO) member states devote an average of just 2 percent of health budgets to mental health. In short, mental health is an inextricable and underfunded part of the NCD challenge, with far-reaching social, economic, and health implications. Strategically and sustainably addressing NCDs will therefore require concomitant efforts to improve access to, and the outcomes of, mental health care. Given Latin American countries’ aging populations and economic stagnation, as well as COVID-19’s acute negative impact on health systems, the region warrants closer examination and understanding of the scope of mental illness and the multifaceted benefits of strengthening mental health care.foreignpolicy.com, 12d ago
Utopians were also more easily able to maintain the use of Indigenous languages, and it is the vitality of the region’s native tongues – which is particularly striking, given that colonialism has severely threatened if not extirpated so many other Aboriginal languages across the country – that has caught the eye of some academics and government officials as a protective factor worthy of exploring. The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies cited the Utopia study’s results in a 2014 report that recommended the government ‘include allocation of funding to language activities as part of health and justice programmes’ (emphasis mine). The Institute further encouraged regional health departments themselves to either fund or directly implement language-revitalisation measures. The implication here is pointed, in suggesting that linguistic marginalisation serves not merely as a barrier to accessing care (as, for instance, when public health messaging is available only in a dominant language), but that it is a risk factor for disease in and of itself – one that could be resolved by promoting (re)connection with or continued use of a heritage language.Aeon, 27d ago
Advocate for government-sponsored cybersecurity resources for healthcare providers. An effective and resilient healthcare system is critical to our nation’s national security and for the wellbeing of our public health system. And while healthcare is the most targeted critical infrastructure industry for ransomware attacks according to the FBI, most organizations don’t have the resources they need to fund cybersecurity programs. Providers need more support from our government, and we should continue to advocate for this much needed assistance. This includes, among other things, educational resources, tools and grants to fund investments in cybersecurity. While new standards may be useful tools in building and evaluating programs, we must also ensure that the industry does not become overburdened with regulations that don’t drive value and which result in unnecessary additional costs. In the case that regulations are brought forth, we must ensure that they are reasonable and appropriate and include input from our members. As an AEHIS Board Member, I will advocate strongly for the interests of our AEHIS members, and strive for productive, value-added assistance from our government in order to address our challenges in resources and funding.Healthcare Security - AEHIS, 4d ago

new She added that “As a stakeholder in the HR industry, I believe the government plays a role in shaping the landscape for economic development and wealth creation. Government strengthening educational platforms by investing in a robust educational framework that aligns with the demands of the contemporary workforce. It includes fostering partnerships between educational institutions and industry players to ensure graduates are adequately prepared for the dynamic challenges of the workplace. Introducing comprehensive Employment insurance schemes through centralized platforms can be a transformative step. Such initiatives would provide a safety net for individuals in between jobs by offering financial support and access to skill development programs that enhance employability. Reviewing and modernizing existing labour laws is imperative to meet the current economic landscape’s demands. This involves ensuring that regulations are flexible, adaptive, and supportive of innovation. A balanced approach is crucial to safeguard workers’ rights while creating an environment conducive to business growth and job creation. There is the need to continuously foster a conducive environment for entrepreneurship. new From an HR point of view, it’s about being able to attract talent with a culture that is unrivaled in hospitality. The way I look at that is, it is almost split into two or three different parts. The first and most important part is the team member experience. We talk internally about how the customer experience will never be better than the team experience and that brings into play that good job/bad job element. We intentionally tap into that team experience, so that people genuinely want to be a part of our business. We don’t want to be an also-ran, we want to be the number one employer choice and we’re not far off that. So, the team member experience is our number one priority and that is where we’re working with our franchise partners and we’re very excited about the results so far. We have a relatively small head office, with around 60-70 people, where we also want to build on our unique culture, to create a very high-performing team in our head office, too. If team members are the first part, the second part of our plan is to continue to create incredible careers for people. I’m an example of someone who has grown through the organisation and there are many more within the Pizza Hut team that have achieved great things in their careers. We are working on career planning, upskilling, training people and giving opportunities. I mentioned Heartstyles earlier and that runs right the way through. Then it’s about really working with our franchise partners to help them build their capability. That comes through helping them with organisational design, with capability and supporting them with tools, processes and systems. Ultimately, we need all parts of that equation to be firing on all cylinders to deliver that brand growth. I must mention too about our commitment to showing up in the wider community, as well, as that is an increasingly important area of engagement. We have what we call The Recipe For Good (our ESG strategy) and we have invested a million pounds into something we call the New Founders Programme, which is about creating opportunities for underrepresented entrepreneurs, which is right at the heart of how our business thrives and grows – built through entrepreneurial franchisees, that have started up and built their own businesses and become successful; we want to pay that back through our New Founders Programme. Over the last 18 months, we’ve invested a million pounds into this and have supported over a thousand entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds. We’re in the process of injecting a similar amount of money again to progress what is turning out to be a real success. As with all these programmes, I really hope and genuinely believe that more people will start to see the benefits of working in this fun and vibrant world. It needs to be more than a means to earn money. This needs to be a sector which people are proud to work in and that will come through young people looking at potential careers, seeing the benefits, feeling the learning and growing in skills and confidence. I really do believe the best days of working in hospitality are ahead of us, but we need to do much better as an industry, collectively.theHRDIRECTOR, 2d ago
new ROBERT CHAPMAN-SMITH: Yeah. In some ways the, the mission of OpenAI for sort of doing it for the benefit of all humanity is, is kind of interesting to have in a technology space- computers broadly-where like open source protocols and ways of working has been such the norm. The board firing Sam Altman and ultimately rehiring him, it sort of kicked off seemingly an awareness of the importance, for some people, of open source AI development and particularly models in that arena, which is, you know, you're, you're mentioning the democratization of AI tools and some, for some folks that is the democratization of these tools. The fact that you can release these models on GitHub or use them on Hugging Face and everybody has access to them. I'm, I'm curious the acceleration of that space tied with the fact that there's gonna be many more competitors that are looking to capture customers off of the turmoil that existed within OpenAI; in some ways it feels like the race for being dominant players in this space might move much more quickly than it was before when it seemed like a OpenAI was just the dominant player and nobody was going to take away the customer base that they had been in the lead that they had had in the models that they had created. I'm curious about your thoughts there.Big Think, 2d ago

..."We invest in programs that put people to work, change lives and careers, that's really what we're about," NJC President Mike White said, sharing that NJC used the RISE grant to provide technology that gives real-world experience in the form of nursing simulators, to develop a renewable energy certificate and create a renewable energy mobile lab so that high school students can have access to the programming without having to leave their school, and to help reduce barriers to obtaining a higher education.During the tour of the nursing lab, Julie Brower, director of the nursing program, spoke about the three ways the RISE grant benefited her department. It allowed them to be able to hire a full-time nurse aid coordinator, which increased the quality of their program and allowed them to increase the number of CNA (certified nursing assistant) classes they offer each year. The grant also helped the nursing program reach out to diverse students by working with Jamie Giacomini, adult and community education director, to enroll English Language Learner (ELL) students and purchase Spanish textbooks for the CNA class. From that, they were able to hire two bilingual nurses who are teaching a CNA class. With the addition of the full-time position and the growth they've seen, the nursing department is also adding a medication aid program for CNAs as a new career advancement opportunity. Classes for that will start in January.GovTech, 3d ago

The practice of web scraping is certainly on the radar of global privacy regulators. In late August, 12 international data protection and privacy authorities released a joint statement around web scraping to instill greater accountability on social media companies that collect personal information and make it publicly available. Of course, many of the privacy concerns around web scraping originate with bad actors, or those who use web scraping to perpetrate cyberattacks, create fraudulent loan or credit card applications, gather political intelligence, and deliver bulk unsolicited marketing messages. Data protection regulators have seen an increased number of reports of these kinds of incidents and are cautioning all companies to be on heightened alert.iapp.org, 26d ago
However, prior to rolling out the latest technological advances such as AI, it is key that the groundwork is laid by ensuring all NHS trusts and social care providers have reached a minimum standard of digital maturity. While over 90% of NHS trusts now having an electronic patient record (EPR), only 50% all social care providers have adopted digital social care records. The UK must keep advancing the pace and reach of health and social care record digitisation, whilst also recognising that digital maturity goes beyond this. As reported by the Health Service Journal in July, just three Integrated Care Systems out of 42 scored higher than a 3 out of 5 on NHS England’s digital maturity score assessment.techuk.org, 12d ago

...“I am honoured to be the recipient of the 2023 Royal-Mach-Gaensslen Prize for Mental Health Research,” said Dr. Iyer. “I envision a future of mental health care in which all young people have access to the care that they need, where they are, and in the ways they prefer. Through my research, I am uncovering innovative ways to bridge equity gaps so young people from communities that have been traditionally underserved can have access to supports and services that work for them. By collaborating and co-designing research with young people, their families, clinicians and policy makers, we are actively breaking down barriers and creating youth-friendly, inclusive care environments. It is crucial that researchers, clinicians and health systems listen to and learn from youth and families with lived experience to ensure that research priorities and health system designs and policies reflect people’s care needs and realities.”...theroyal.ca, 28d ago
Any development project comes to life in a complex urban ecosystem. This adds to the difficulty of establishing a causal relationship between it and the lives of the people who live in and around it.The Healthy Neighborhoods Study was conceived as a way to gain deeper understanding of the effects of neighborhood change on health, says Andrew Seeder, a research scientist for the study. “Not just change in terms of the presence or absence of new social services, but feelings of belonging, sentiments of having ownership over the change that you’re seeing in the neighborhood.”The early phases of the study led to the development of a screening tool, HealthScore, that enables CLF and MHIC to form a more complete picture of the health, equity and resilience impacts of a project — and the likelihood that they will be achieved. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for HNEF funding, and for performance reviews five and 10 years after construction has been completed. The HealthScore tool was a big step forward in assessing the potential for a development to improve health in a neighborhood. But its metrics didn’t capture everything.“They are indicators of the distribution of certain material resources, but not indicators of what the presence or absence of those things mean for people in their lives,” says Vedette Gavin, director of research for CLF. There weren’t secondary data sets that could reflect changes in things such as self-determination, relationships or a sense of well-being.The research team took on the challenge of identifying the pathways through which a change in a neighborhood resulted in a change of health, and the metrics that could reflect this. This work is proceeding through a participatory action study (PAR), an approach in which researchers collaborate with stakeholders affected by a problem. The decadelong study is being conducted in partnership with residents and community organizations from nine communities in the Boston area where a surge of new development is anticipated. The research, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, draws on stories collected in interviews with residents as well as data sets to develop both evidence and action strategies. One of the important new measures that has come out of this work is “ownership of change.” A person’s sense that they don’t have control over their life can have an adverse effect on health. If neighborhood residents aren’t consulted during the development process, they can experience feelings of displacement or dispossession from a project, no matter how many benefits may be intended.Members of the study team talk about the importance of including resident voices in development projects.Governing, 5d ago
Despite the screening recommendations from the CDC and other public health authorities, the rate of testing has fallen short for many of the more common STIs. This is often due to the stigma surrounding STIs, which can make it difficult for some people to seek testing. However, knowing your STI status is crucial not only for your own health but also for the health of your partners and the community at large. Regular testing and education are key steps in reversing the trend of rising STI rates.MedCity News, 3d ago

The rapid advancement of AI brings both promise as well as peril. Concerns encompass AI’s lack of transparency, potential job losses, susceptibility to social manipulation, privacy issues, bias perpetuation, socioeconomic inequalities, ethical challenges and of course the threat of autonomous weapons. Moreover, unchecked AI could erode human qualities, disrupt financial markets and unleash uncontrollable self-aware AI. As we navigate this evolving landscape, responsible development, regulation and ethical considerations are essential to harness AI’s potential while mitigating its risks.Techiexpert.com, 3d ago
Virtual data protection solutions such as network security virtualization, virtualized servers and desktops, among others, can help you enhance the reliability and overall security of your organization’s IT environment. For instance, with virtualized networks, you can simplify traffic management. Virtual servers can reduce the threat of breaches through network segmentation, buying you additional time to react. A virtual desktop, which streamlines endpoint protection, is the main tool when securing virtual machines.Financesonline.com, 3d ago
In deciding the courses that we offer to high-school students and in determining the most effective ways for the students to struggle productively with the material, we cannot ignore the fact that high-performing schools are steered by the expectations of selective colleges. These universities want to see their engineering majors take AP Physics, for instance. So at BLS we offer both AP Physics courses, the one in mechanics and the one in electricity and magnetism. We encourage our students interested in engineering to select one or both of them in junior or senior year, sometimes at the sacrifice of an elective they might prefer. Large universities regularly subject their freshmen to impersonal lectures in large halls, with their entire grade depending on a couple of high-stakes exams, so we recognize that there’s a place for students needing to practice taking in large amounts of information verbally and visually. Students learn to break that information down into outlines that they can study from later. We also run a week of final exams at the end of each school year so that students become accustomed to preparing for cumulative timed exams. Admissions officers strain to find ways to sort through students with similar GPAs, poring over evidence of leadership in their extracurricular activities as one potentially distinctive characteristic. So while BLS students are already strapped for time due to the six major subjects they take each year, they pile on deep commitments to their clubs, bands, sports, and part-time jobs.Education Next, 3d ago

In order to keep up with customer demands, insurance companies must process and share sensitive customer data with a myriad of third parties all while ensuring their customers have the ability to access, change and submit their information instantaneously through websites and their mobile applications. This new landscape has placed APIs at the heart of insurance, poses new security challenges and shines a spotlight visible to malicious actors looking to exploit. In fact, according to survey respondents from Salt Security's State of API Security for Financial Services and Insurance, 92% had experienced at least one significant security issue with their production APIs over the past year, an alarming figure. Further, as a result of Covid, there has been a spike in the number of insurance providers globally that have adopted state of the art, API driven, AI-based automation technology to provide services, process customer claims, as well as support the underwriting process. In fact, according to McKinsey & Company, AI is poised to reshape the insurance industry by 2030. Insurance business leaders are now being forced to address the compounded emerging challenges in security, requiring them to augment, update, or replace existing security defenses swiftly and effectively.Digital Insurance, 3d ago

The disparities in Colorado reflect the unequal access to trauma hospitals and emergency care across the American West.Dr. Julie Dunn, one of the authors of the study on Colorado trauma outcomes, said she has spent her career trying to dissuade people of the notion that every hospital emergency department is equipped to handle complex trauma. Her hospital, UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, was designated as a Level I trauma center in July 2022.Dunn’s hospital receives patients from rural towns on the eastern plains of Colorado and from as far as several hours away in southwest Nebraska and Wyoming, where hospitals don’t have enough resources to treat severe bleeding. The condition those patients arrive in depends on whether the hospitals where they were stabilized had a surgeon on staff, Dunn said. Those small hospitals can usually resuscitate hemorrhaging patients, but they are not equipped to stop the bleeding altogether, said Dunn, who also leads a regional trauma committee for the American College of Surgeons that includes Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah and the Dakotas.Because of the dearth of high-level trauma centers in this part of the country, the most seriously injured patients must first go to a lower level trauma center or non-trauma hospital, or travel longer distances, delaying treatment, Dunn said. Many of these states have the highest proportions of people dying before they reach a hospital, the analysis with the University of Alabama at Birmingham found.Parts of the South, including Arkansas and Alabama, also have high proportions of prehospital trauma deaths. The News’ analysis is based on a 2018 study that linked state levels of prehospital trauma deaths to timely access to high-level trauma centers. Dr. Zain Hashmi, a UAB trauma surgeon and the study’s lead author, said he often sees patients from rural parts of Alabama who are near death because of how long it took to reach him.“It’s really, really sad to see those patients, because we could have made a difference, truly,” he said.He also recognizes that little data is available on the circumstances of injured victims who die before reaching a hospital. Those patients may never be evaluated by a medical professional, and local rules dictate whether they undergo an autopsy.“That’s a big black hole of information right now,” Hashmi said.On the East Coast — where states are smaller, population density is higher and trauma centers are more available — fewer patients die before reaching a hospital. Some cities have outsized trauma resources. Boston, a city of less than 700,000 people, has five adult Level I trauma centers — more than the states of Oregon, Washington and Nevada combined.Dr. Joseph Amos, trauma medical director for Methodist Health System in Dallas, studied the growth of trauma centers in certain parts of the country for a 2021 paper published in Trauma Surgery & Acute Care Open. In one area of Florida, his research team discovered for-profit hospital systems were choosing to become trauma centers — not out of need but because funding was available for facilities that treated uninsured trauma patients.Nationally, no one regulates the placement or expansion of high-level trauma centers in the U.S. In Texas, they increased by nearly 40 percent over the last decade, according to Amos’ study.Dr. Ernest Moore sees a similar pattern in his city, where what was then called Denver General Hospital used to be one of two trauma centers in the metro area. Now, the city has “so many I couldn’t count.” The duplication of services hampers research and education. When hospitals treat larger numbers of patients, trauma specialists gain expertise and patient care improves, Moore said.Meanwhile, other parts of the state remain starved of resources. The News’ analysis shows about 82 percent of trauma victims in Gunnison County, home to around 17,000 people in the heart of the mountains, died before reaching a hospital, compared with around 50 percent in Denver County, the state’s best-performing county.“We have way too many trauma centers along the front range of the mountains — we have too many in Fort Collins, too many in Denver, too many in Colorado Springs,” said Moore, who served as chief of trauma at Denver Health for nearly four decades.Governing, 3d ago
Over the past several years an additional influence on shipowners’ newbuilding order decisions affecting the fleet’s evolution has come to the forefront. There has been an intensifying focus on decarbonising the world merchant ship fleet, and the fuels and technology required to achieve this aim. Some owners have decided to use a specific alternative fuel in new ships, or at least to include the option of using it in the future. By contrast many other owners apparently have been deterred from or at least have hesitated in placing orders, because of extreme uncertainty about the fuels that will be acceptable over a typical vessel lifetime of up to twenty five years.hellenicshippingnews.com, 3d ago
Case in point: despite online learning likely being our greatest tool for dramatically scaling programs at a fraction of the cost, those cited in the article did not reference it once as a solution, and it’s not because some of the universities mentioned in the article haven’t yet dipped their toes into the world of tech-enabled learning. Today, both innovative online universities and established brick-and-mortar institutions are leveraging online learning to provide students with greater flexibility and personal ownership over their experience; recently it was reported that 70 percent of college students are enrolled in at least one online course. But offering online courses or even programs doesn’t necessarily mean an institution is fully capitalizing on technology’s potential to significantly expand access to education and address workforce needs. As with any innovation, its potential rests in how it’s deployed. Unfortunately, promising innovations like online learning are often deployed with the same artificial constraints that exist in traditional models of learning, for instance faculty teaching loads, synchronous virtual lectures, and fixed-pace schedules.Inside Higher Ed | Higher Education News, Events and Jobs, 3d ago
In response to these challenges, I tell my clients that they would benefit from adopting a flexible approach to RTO mandates. A one-size-fits-all policy may not only lead to legal repercussions but also overlook the diverse needs of a modern workforce. Companies need to make wise decisions and avoid biases in considering individual employee circumstances, including disability, age, and parental responsibilities, to navigate this new legal landscape successfully. Inflexible RTO mandates not only risk alienating key segments of the workforce, but also invite a host of legal challenges. By embracing flexibility and inclusivity in RTO strategies, employers can mitigate legal risks, foster employee engagement, and build a more inclusive and productive work environment.CEOWORLD magazine, 3d ago

November 30, 2023 – HR leaders and executive recruiters alike say that promoting diversity and belonging in the workplace is not just a buzzword. It’s a crucial aspect of modern businesses. Companies that foster diversity and belonging have been proven to have better financial performance, increased innovation, and a more engaged workforce. However, a recent report from The Christopher Group’s Pam Noble explains that with the recent supreme court ruling on affirmative action in colleges and universities the question arises, ‘Do all companies need a chief diversity officer (CDO)?’ and ‘what happens when they aren’t present?’...Hunt Scanlon Media, 3d ago
The work programme on just transition pathways (JTWP) was created to boost global understanding of just transition pathways. It aims to facilitate countries’ just transitions to a low-emissions and climate-resilient future through actions that also contribute to reducing inequalities, both within and between countries. The JTWP will facilitate knowledge-sharing and development of best climate action practices in line with a just transition and encourage conversations between countries and other stakeholders — such as policymakers, NGOs and local communities — to devise more effective ways of realizing just transitions in the socioeconomic and environmental spheres. At COP28, the first high-level ministerial round table will be held in order to prepare the work programme’s activities for the next five years.World Resources Institute, 3d ago

Epistemology: Beyond psychological dynamics, some have identified epistemological deficiencies as a root cause for misinformation: issues with how users find and assess information especially online. Some have focused on online search or 'research' (Tripodi, 2018), behaviours, or looked more broadly at verification strategies (Schwarzenegger, 2019; Flintham et al., 2018). Expanding this focus on epistemology to the social level, others have ascribed the problems of misinformation to a broad national shift in the treatment of evidence and facts. Much of this work has drawn implicitly or explicitly on Foucauldian 'regimes of truth' (1980) or Jasanoff's 'civic epistemologies' (2004). The implication is that in recent years, the US has seen a broad shift both in the discourse around and mechanisms of how truth/falsehood is established in society. At the same time, this aligns with the long-recognised tactic by authoritarians to undermine the public's ability to sort truth from falsehoods (Arendt, 1951). Relatedly, many have ascribed the spread of misinformation, at least in part, to a broad reduction in trust in institutions. Public opinion surveys have tracked such a decline in trust across institutions for decades, and now, truth in most institutions is at historic lows (Pew, 2022). This work recognises that trust plays an essential role in public knowledge production: whether that is trusting the government to provide accurate information, trusting scientists to accurately describe their unique access to and understanding of the natural world, or trusting media to accurately and objectively describe the world.Internet Policy Review, 3d ago

But even though Natividad’s preoccupation with data privacy makes him a bit of an anomaly among his classmates, he’s part of a growing group of college students arguing it shouldn’t be this way. Long written off as not caring about privacy because of their extensive sharing on social media, college students have become more organized and insistent about what they see as a right. At the University of Michigan, a student’s quest for greater transparency led to ViziBLUE, a website launched in 2020 that lets students see what personal information is collected and how it is used. When the COVID pandemic forced a huge portion of higher education to move online, students across the country protested the use of online exam-proctoring software that gathered information about their faces and homes. On many campuses, protesters have pressured university administrators to commit to banning the use of facial recognition technology before ever trying it.LAist, 4d ago

AI does, however, also carry certain possible hazards to the security and privacy of data. AI might be utilized, for instance, to create fresh, more advanced cyberattacks. Additionally, AI might be used to automate the large-scale collecting and analysis of personal data, which might cause privacy issues. Furthermore, massive quantities of personal data are frequently used to train AI systems. This data may be susceptible to theft or illegal access if it is not adequately secured. This might result in a significant data breach, which could have disastrous effects on the people whose data is exposed. AI is probably going to have a mixed effect on data security and privacy overall.MarTech Series, 27d ago
In various industries, privacy is paramount. For instance, in transportation & logistics, drivers in ride-sharing services call their riders without ever viewing the rider’s actual number. In the sphere of last-mile deliveries, it is imperative to maintain communication without jeopardising the safety and privacy of the involved parties. This emphasis on discretion extends to the ecommerce and online shopping and food delivery, where delivery personnel connect with customers, with neither party seeing the other’s true contact details. Similarly, in the banking sector, representatives reach out to customers, ensuring that their phone numbers remain shielded throughout the conversation. This acts as a robust defence against fraud, curtailing the potential exposure of personal phone numbers to malicious entities. This protective measure enhances customer trust, as they are more inclined to communicate when assured of the security of their personal details.CRN - India, 27d ago

...00:28:14l Larry Gostin:I would say that’s exactly it. I would say that combatants in a conflict none of us like what they do to each other but there is one thing that’s sacred and that both sides need to respect are the health and lives of patients, healthcare workers and the health infrastructure that exists. The hospital infrastructure but also the public health infrastructure and the public health infrastructure is in many ways as if not much more important because it requires governments to provide food, water, medicines, electricity, all the things, all the basic necessities of life and we need potable water. You need nutritious food. You need electricity to protect. And so, the idea of respect and protect is the human rights notion but here it applies to that sacred place which is the health system.Ms. Magazine, 11d ago
It’s definitely hard to argue with this depressing characterization of the state of public health today. There is now little or no effort in the US or elsewhere in infection control and prevention; it is the ultimate success of disease mongers like Jeffrey Tucker and the Brownstone Institute, along with all the other ideological forces and organizations promoting the same message and politics, that any public health interventions are an unacceptable assault on personal “freedom” that must be resisted at all costs. “We want them infected,” indeed.Science-Based Medicine, 22d ago
The landscape of dermatological treatments has undergone a remarkable transformation over recent years. Gone are the days when treatments were limited to topical creams and generic solutions. The modern approach to dermatology is characterized by a deeper understanding of skin pathophysiology and the development of targeted therapies. This progress is underpinned by significant advances in molecular biology and genetics, which have led to more effective and efficient treatments for a range of skin conditions. For instance, biological therapies, which use substances made from living organisms to treat disease, have revolutionized the management of conditions like psoriasis, offering hope to those who have long struggled with these chronic ailments. Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on early intervention and prevention, reflecting a shift towards a more proactive and holistic approach in dermatological care.Science Times, 17d ago

In a rapidly evolving business technology landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in management. The predictive capabilities of AI have equipped managers with data-driven foresight, enabling them to monitor and anticipate market trends, business risks, customer preferences, and employee behaviors, thereby facilitating more evidence-based decisions. However, as we explore the future of management, we recognize that the potential of AI extends beyond prediction. The emerging generative capabilities of AI represent a leap forward, fostering creativity and enabling innovative ideas, designs, and solutions. With its user-friendly interface, generative AI makes it easier for a broader swath of the population to get involved in AI-enabled problem solving. The synergies between the predictive and generative capabilities of AI are undeniable. Predictive insights fuel generative processes, while generative outputs enhance predictive accuracy. This powerful extension of AI, from prediction machines to generative problem-solvers, presents the potential for AI to transform a host of conventional management practices, heralding an era where artificial agents complement and potentially replace managers and knowledge workers in a variety of organizational settings. These developments have the potential to fundamentally alter the nature of the firm, the future of work, and management theories.AOM_CMS, 4d ago

The end result of this thinking is that Google and Facebook need to engage in what people refer to as “surveillance capitalism,” collecting a ton of data on everyone, building a huge profile about every user, and snooping on basically everything everyone does all day. This is why people have been getting more and more annoyed about the privacy trade-offs over the past few years (though, not so annoyed that they’ve stopped using these platforms in any significant way — though, that could happen). It also has resulted in advertisers assuming that they must put the bulk of their ad dollars into those two platforms on the assumption that the money is better spent there. Indeed, the most recent IAB report on this noted that while the internet ad market continues to rise, 90% of the growth went to Facebook and Google (together the two companies represent about 58% of the total market share for online ads, but 90% of the growth in 2017).Techdirt, 4d ago
This article proceeds as follows. First, we provide some background to normative arguments about retired officer speech. Scholars continue to debate whether retirement releases individuals from constraints on political activity.9 We review these debates as background and context for our analysis of the attitudes of retired officers toward partisan speech and activity. Second, we offer a conceptual framework that provides a template for assessing the degree to which a norm against political speech and activity by retired officers is robust, contested, or approaching “death.” This framework includes both observable behavioral indicators that this norm exists, as well as motivational elements related to officers’ attitudes about the appropriateness of that activism. We look first at what is known at present about the status of this norm, focusing on the period of the All-Volunteer Force. This section contends that, since the 1990s, there has been a steady movement away from a consolidated norm against retiree political activism — that is, whatever analysts might think about whether there should be a norm, in reality there is diminishing evidence that one exists.Texas National Security Review, 4d ago
Aside from employing a dedicated data science team, companies likely lack the information they need to make an informed choice about generative AI. The last thing they'd want is to buy whatever the shiniest new toy might be before it's properly vetted or broken in. It's also worth considering how a vendor is implementing its AI — it may be with full transparency and an eye towards growth, or it may be a quick, patchwork solution with no ability to meet the ever-changing needs of a company. Here's more on how companies can proceed and why going the proprietary route may be the choice with the fewest downsides:...diginomica, 4d ago

Take, for example, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a three-decade partnership between ICF and more than half of U.S. states and territories. Governments use data from this annual survey of more than 400,000 people to help make public health decisions to benefit their residents. Through this partnership, ICF has merged deep expertise in data collection and sampling protocols with a state-level understanding of population, region, and health priorities. The BRFSS is a great example of how agencies and providers can meaningfully collect complicated data in small subpopulations. Its flexibility increases the likelihood that data produced are relevant to the complex planning needs of each locality that participates.ICF, 17d ago

All too often, application health is an overlooked and underestimated component of the cyber resilience puzzle. Over the past decade, cybersecurity spending has skyrocketed, with many billions being invested each year in adding new security capabilities to prevent attacks. Despite these investments, breaches continue to occur in record numbers and with increasing sophistication. This is in part because, with the introduction of each new capability, we also introduced a new layer of complexity at the endpoint, and that in turn undermines the health of the applications deployed to protect our devices, data, and users.CFOtech Australia, 4d ago
Boerstra also has extensive experience creating optimal indoor environments in homes, schools, and offices. He recently joined the DAT on behalf of TU Delft. From his experience as a senior consultant at an engineering firm, he has strong opinions on the importance of good air quality and thermal comfort, for example. “We have already made great strides regarding health in buildings. But it’s a relatively slow process. It started around 1900. Back then, there were a lot of problems in housing construction, for example, due to moisture and mold growth and particulate exposure from open fires. Then, the Housing Act and building code were created to make homes healthier. Since then, fortunately, our buildings have become much healthier, but we cannot sit back. Because of the energy transition, people in current projects sometimes overshoot, for example, in terms of insulation, so that too little attention is paid to ensuring a sufficient supply of fresh air,” Boerstra says.IO, 4d ago
Who should be the communicator of information? I think increasingly we realizing that maybe actually relying on trusted community leaders could be a good way to diffuse accurate information into the population. So people might not listen to the government, but maybe they'll listen to their local rabbi or imam or a religious leader or maybe an influencer that can also go sideways when influencers are spreading conspiracy theories. But sometimes, what if Taylor Swift was announcing highly factual information to the world on a regular basis? What would the world look like with her platform? And so we're thinking of new ideas of who are good spokespeople for this issue? Is it the APA? Right? Maybe APA has a role to play. And so that's currently what we're thinking about testing also, who's the right communicator?...https://www.apa.org, 4d ago
...“From the treatment, it was found that many patients had tried to lose weight by various methods in the past, including behavior modification and exercise, but these may not have been enough to treat obesity. Therefore, patients who are eligible for surgical treatment You will be thoroughly prepared for surgery. It was found that patients were able to maintain a stable weight in the long term. In addition, it has been found that losing weight helps to improve the results of treating joint diseases. Reduce the rate of use of drugs to treat heart disease, lipids, and diabetes. It has been found that diabetes patients can be cured as high as 80% of all patients who undergo surgery. Especially in patients who have had diabetes for less than 10 years, there is a high cure rate of almost 100%. In addition, it also reduces symptoms of bone and joint disease. ...”The Breakthrough Effect in ASEAN” offers concrete solutions to trigger socioeconomic tipping points that could unlock these opportunities in prioritized sectors most relevant to the region. Amazon is the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, and on a path to powering its global operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025. ASEAN economies can do much more to increase the availability and affordability of renewable energy—and massively scale opportunities for inbound corporate investments in this space in the process. The report identifies specific recommendations in this regard, including leveling the playing field for renewable power project developers, and enabling direct investments (via power purchase agreements) for corporate consumers. We hope ASEAN government leverage corporate consumer demand to boost the renewable energy sector, as this will also bring associated capital, green jobs, the proliferation of green technologies, and a tangible opportunity to meet national climate targets.SYSTEMIQ, 4d ago
AI can fuel the ideas of more education entrepreneurs. Steve Jobs said that the personal computer was like a “bicycle for the mind,” but in the hands of education entrepreneurs, AI is more like an airplane, allowing them to do more and higher-quality work than was previously possible. Studies show that good management matters, including in schools—and AI tools are poised to make high-quality management advice more accessible to the masses. In a recent study, researchers at Harvard Business School showed that access to GPT-4 helped consultants at Boston Consulting Group produce higher-quality work and also leveled the playing field between lower and higher performers. If education entrepreneurs can leverage AI tools in a similar way, many more people with a passion to educate children will be able to generate strategic plans, pressure-test their curricular and pedagogical ideas, and build other key infrastructure needed to move from an idea to a more fully-formed organizational concept. The Thomas B. One of the key drivers for better integration is to improve population health and health care. Proactively supporting carers through an integrated, population health-management approach could enable them to stay well and provide essential care for longer, reducing rates of carer breakdown and costly late-stage interventions. This approach also has the potential to release savings that can be reinvested in health services. Another driver for integration is to tackle inequalities in outcomes, experiences and access. There is clear evidence that caring responsibilities are linked to inequalities and are more concentrated in areas of England and Wales with higher deprivation. The Health Foundation, 26d ago
On October 23, 2023, the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) published a new draft guidance, titled Communications From Firms to Health Care Providers Regarding Scientific Information on Unapproved Uses of Approved/Cleared Medical Products, Questions and Answers (the “2023 Draft Guidance”). The 2023 Draft Guidance is a revision to, and builds upon, FDA’s 2014 draft guidance on the same issue, Distributing Scientific and Medical Publications on Unapproved New Uses — Recommended Practices, which itself was a revision to FDA’s 2009 guidance, Good Reprint Practices for the Distribution of Medical Journal Articles and Medical or Scientific Reference Publications on Unapproved New Uses of Approved Drugs and Approved or Cleared Medical Devices. Drug and device manufacturers (“firms”) will note that in the 2023 Draft Guidance, FDA introduces multiple new concepts. Addition of terms such as “SIUU Communications” and “Firm-Generated Presentations” appear to broaden the possibilities for firms’ communications with healthcare providers (“HCPs”) while inclusion of concepts such as “scientifically sound” and “clinically relevant” can be read as imposing certain limitations on what can be included in SIUU Communications. FDA’s inclusion of these new concepts provides both guidance and guardrails for firms to ensure SIUU Communications with HCPs stay in line with FDA regulatory requirements. With the 2023 Draft Guidance, FDA continues to be thoughtful and intentional with its views on communications between firms and HCPs, and demonstrates to industry that the agency will continue to evolve its thinking with the advent of new technologies, advancements in science, medicine, and the delivery of care, and in light of the ever-changing modes and methods of communication.natlawreview.com, 23d ago
Successful, effective integrated care requires certain conditions in which to be developed and implemented, or at least the best that can be managed. Systems recognise this only too well. Leaders in our State of ICS report told us that they feel partnership, collaboration and the identification of shared priorities is positive, but that ongoing local and national pressures play a significant role in preventing them from bringing partners together and having the time and space to focus on transformation plans and their delivery. These pressures include but aren’t limited to centrally led targets, the impact of ongoing industrial action, ICB running cost allowance reductions, financial deficits, health and social care workforce issues, winter planning, and COVID-19.NHS Confederation, 27d ago
Dr. Jaffar Al-Tawfiq, Professor, Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare, Dhahran, KSA, said: “”The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally shaken the pillars of global health, exposing vulnerabilities and creating an urgent need for adaptive responses. This virus has reminded us of the interconnectedness of our global society and the need for international cooperation to combat such threats. In terms of prevention and treatment, we are witnessing an era of remarkable scientific advancement, with new vaccines, therapeutics, and infection control strategies being developed at an unprecedented pace. It’s not just about treating the disease but preventing it, and the advances in vaccine technology offer hope. However, we must continue to adapt, innovate, and most importantly, share our knowledge to ensure the health and wellbeing of all”.mid-east.info, 29d ago
And consumer-driven techniques can even be used to educate consumers on better health behaviors. For example, the treatment of obesity – which impacts around 42% of the US adult population – is largely dependent on costly drugs. Healthcare providers need to find ways to encourage patients to move towards healthier life choices rather than relying on drugs, and indeed, many providers are already sending out educational letters, flyers and emails to educate patients on the steps they could take to reduce their weight and improve their health. The problem is that, without personalization, these campaigns often fail to cut through or achieve their intended impact. Tailoring communications to specific patient cohorts is the essential first step towards genuine behavior change.Healthcare Business Today, 16d ago
There is no “wrong door" to access mental health resources. It is important that access and treatment for mental and behavioral health care is available at any point of entry across the care continuum, including prevention and wellness, screening and early detection, intervention, and post-discharge and access to ongoing care. This comes with the responsibility to make sure effective infrastructure is in place to ensure that those with mental and behavioral health needs will be identified, assessed, and have access to treatment, either directly or through appropriate referrals, no matter where they enter across the realm of services.MedicalEconomics, 20d ago

But during periods of unified government, presidents are more likely to issue important directives as executive orders and proclamations, which are going to be exactly the kind of directives that will get more scrutiny and public attention. The second finding that we show is that when you take stock of the diversity of tools through which presidents create unilateral policies, our findings differ a bit from the existing literature. And so a second ago I just characterized a bunch of mixed findings in previous scholarship around this question. Most of that scholarship has focus exclusively on executive orders, again because they’re the highest profile instance of presidential unilateralism. But they haven’t taken stock of the wide range of ways that I just noted a moment ago that presidents can create unilateral policy. So when we do that, we find that congressional opposition is not quite the constraint on presidential unilateralism that we thought it might be.Niskanen Center - Improving Policy, Advancing Moderation, 4d ago

Enhancing Computer Security for Nuclear Safety and Security: “It is well known that in nuclear and radiological facilities physical security systems and measures are necessary to protect equipment, systems and devices — typically intended to maintain nuclear safety — from a deliberate act of sabotage that could potentially lead to a release with radiological consequences. Typically, in older designs and applications, safety systems needed to be protected with only physical protection measures. However, the ubiquitous and ever-increasing technology trends of today are significantly increasing the role of the digital systems in the efficiency of operations at nuclear and radiological facilities, especially associated with those responsible for important facility functions, such as instrumentation and control systems, including those used both for safety and security. The security of these systems requires stringent vigilance to identify vulnerabilities and deter unauthorized access to digital control systems that may result in compromised safety or security functions. In this regard, computer security is becoming increasingly important for the interplay between safety and security, and is being addressed as part of other key areas[…].”...Stimson Center, 4d ago

I hope that we continue to utilise technology and innovation to improve access to public transport for all people. It is important to ensure that technological advances don’t lead to inequities – different needs, abilities and circumstances require different solutions. For some, that means the ability to plan, book and pay for their trip using a cell phone or smartwatch, but, for others, that means being able to speak to a trip planner and pay with cash. I hope that automation is implemented in a way that improves mobility for all without increasing congestion. And I hope that public transport continues to help us to reduce our carbon footprint on this planet. This industry has evolved so rapidly in the last 10 years and is meeting the needs of so many more people than ever before – I hope that that evolution continues well into the future.Intelligent Transport, 5d ago
He explains that using such data with algos doesn’t make sense. “The use of a historic database of algo executions to guess which algo to use now is like driving from A to B using last week’s traffic conditions when roadworks may have moved, and the weather may have changed. This challenge is what led New Change to build its Data Processing as a Service (DPaaS) offering. NCFX, under an ordinary platform agreement, can take feeds from banks and process them to produce live analytics for its clients. Clients can create their live midrate, see how a trade or algo execution with a bank affects the prices at every other institution, and triangulate their midrate with the independent midrate from NCFX and their own micro-price.” Lambert adds that while these feeds are built on live data, clients can store their data feeds with New Change FX and run historical analyses on them.e-Forex, 5d ago

A variety of factors lead to HAPIs. A good source for a more in-depth exploration are the 2019 International Clinical Practice Guidelines, developed in collaboration with the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP).9 According to clinicians, both physiological (intrinsic) and non-physiological (extrinsic) risk factors influence a patient’s risk of acquiring a PI. These include diabetes mellitus, peripheral vascular disease, cerebral vascular accident, sepsis, and hypotension.10 While there are some pressure injuries that are unavoidable11, a troubling trend is the increase in HAPIs. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality AHRQ shows that the national rate of pressure injuries rose by 6% from 2014 to 2017, rising from 21.7 injuries per1,000 discharges in 2014 to 23 per 1,000 discharges in 2017.12...Net Health, 5d ago
As befits an FX conference, there always needs to be panel on the dollar outlook! This was moderated by Isabel Albarran (Close Brothers), with panellists Stephen Jen (Eurizon), Caroline Houdril (Schroders), Stefan Hofrichter (Allianz), Kiran Kowshik (Lombard Odier), Samuel Zief (JPM Private Bank) and Gonzalo Canet (ATFX). A debate in markets is how how a soft landing would impact the USD. Houdril noted that whilst a soft landing would be likely negative for the dollar, if the US was doing better than elsewhere, it could support the USD. Albarran felt that the USD would be broader be stronger. In periods where there had been broader based depreciation, there had generally been several factors at play, the USD had been a lower yielder, there had been EM interventions and an impact from terms of trade moves. Currently, obviously, the USD is a higher yielder. For Jen, he noted that there have been two drivers for the USD, notably the Fed and inflation, a now a focus on China, which was new. Before, China had been a high beta play. Whilst there were structural negatives on the dollar, the twin deficits, we don’t tend to play attention to them till there was a cyclical turn. He suggested the USD was 10% overvalued.Kowshik discussed the topic from the perspective of his clients, who were generally EUR and CHF based. If equities fall, EUR tended to weaken. For CHF the situation was trickier, it was low yielding, and has steadily appreciated, and has had its currency account surplus recycled. There was also the factor that FX was a monetary policy tool in Switzerland. The topic of the dollar as a reserve currency also came up, although the consensus was that it was difficult to replace. One important point was that the liquidity in financial sector is what counts for a reserve currency, given that the proportion of financial transactions is 50x the real trade.e-Forex, 5d ago
Rising CO2 emissions worldwide are responsible for increasing climate impacts, such as droughts, floods, cyclones, wildfires, and other extreme events (IPCC 2021). Traditionally, economic growth has improved living standards in many nations, but it has also led to higher CO2 emissions and the depletion of natural resources (Adom et al. 2012). As we are still largely dependent on fossil fuels for our energy needs, higher economic activity leads to higher energy use, consequently increasing emissions. In 2021, global CO2 emissions linked to energy consumption witnessed a notable increase of 6 per cent, reaching a record high of 36.3 billion tonnes. This rise can be attributed to the robust recovery of the world economy following the COVID-19 crisis, along with a heavy reliance on coal (IEA 2022).CEEW, 5d ago
As social media reaches diverse populations, reporting of population characteristics and disaggregating results by socio-demographic groups should be prioritised. With most studies conducted in high income countries, research into low and middle income countries is needed.34 SWiM findings suggested that social media use may present beneficial effects on adolescent engagement in physical activity, although meta-analysis (based on four cross-sectional studies) did not substantiate this conclusion. Further research into this outcome would allow health policy makers to potentially harness the benefits social media use could present on adolescent health. Moreover, many of the risk behaviours investigated can be experimental during adolescence, and the extent to which these behaviours affect health may vary. Longitudinal research tracking adolescents into adulthood would help to study this gap. Well conducted randomised trials studying risk behaviours over and above unhealthy dietary behaviour would yield more robust evidence than currently available and have been shown to be feasible. Addressing the limitations of existing randomised controlled trials and use of real time monitoring data of social media use would allow for more definitive causal conclusions on the effects of social media activity on adolescent health risk behaviours. The BMJ, 5d ago
AI has been a trending topic in technology for years, but nothing has fueled interest like the recent explosive emergence of generative AI. With many nascent tech trends, cybersecurity is a top area of opportunity as well as concern, and this is no less true with AI. The US National Security Agency (NSA) recently created an entity to oversee development and integration of AI capabilities in US national security systems. AI was a central focus of this year’s RSA Conference. It was also the theme of the opening keynote at Black Hat, where the AI Cyber Challenge, a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiative launched by the Biden-Harris administration, was announced. That same week, DEF CON hosted the largest public "red teaming" (penetration testing) exercise against AI models to date. While these initiatives may sound like efforts to compromise generative AI, they are just the opposite. Technology has long benefited from the efforts of informed security researchers to identify and resolve vulnerabilities and exposures. These efforts represent ways to focus the security community on generative AI to help match its pace of innovation, improve risk mitigation, and foster awareness of concerns that require resolution.spglobal.com, 5d ago

...“Data driven decisions are a cornerstone of most successful businesses, and they begin with a foundation of data quality. The critical pathway for operations to leverage analytics is to first ensure that data integrity and data quality are a core component of their business culture particularly at front line sales where these issues are most common. Many businesses including ours are utilising data quality measures as a gateway prior to eligibility for short term incentives in addition to using business intelligence reporting tools to assist the same staff to improve performance. Over and above this, enhancing internal systems with third party data validations can significantly improve data integrity.Dynamic Business, 5d ago

The assessment of long term health impacts from air pollution, based on numerous epidemiological cohort studies, has become part of the regular disease burden updates of the GBD. In the past decades, since about 1990, disease burden assessments have increasingly acknowledged air pollution as a major global health risk factor. However, the diverse methods of such assessments translate into substantial heterogeneity between published results because a common standard has yet to be formulated.38 Differences between assessments are primarily associated with exposure data, relative risk functions, counterfactual concentration levels, and the health outcomes associated with air pollution (eg, all cause versus disease specific mortality).839 We used updated methods and data sources, but differences in published results about the health benefits of controlling air pollution remain challenging to communicate. Therefore, mortality burden results were recommended to be complemented with the number of deaths that could be prevented by reducing air pollution to promote the understanding of implications.39 Our results contribute in this respect, also because the fractional change in attributable mortality does not depend on the total number of deaths. Nevertheless, assumptions about emission reductions are also associated with uncertainty. Future projections involve socioeconomic, technological, demographic, and policy developments that are hard to foresee. The BMJ, 5d ago

And indeed, a lot is resting on this potential role of technology, including to help improve productivity, which was the topic of this month’s REAL Lecture with Professor Dame Diane Coyle. But, as our projections of future illness have shown, greater productivity by itself is not going to be enough to address the cost and workforce pressures facing our health and care system today and in the future. With one in five of us projected to be living with major illness by 2040, even the most dramatic efficiency improvements will only have a limited impact on reducing these pressures. The Health Foundation, 6d ago

As applications grow more complex, attackers will increasingly seek to exploit vulnerabilities in business logic to bypass traditional security measures and gain unauthorized access. BLAs can be a highly effective way for attackers to steal sensitive data—including personal details, financial information, and healthcare data—and with the cost of breaches continuing to rise, organizations need to ensure they are adequately protected. While solutions like a WAF are still an essential element of application security, they are not equipped to defend against BLAs. Businesses need to act now and invest in security solutions that can identify and stop sophisticated automation that targets APIs and application business logic.CPO Magazine, 26d ago
API usage exploded in 2023. The resulting API sprawl has led to increased data exposure risks, and most organizations lack governance strategies for their APIs. Yet APIs now power the vast majority of applications and services businesses and consumers rely on daily. This rapid escalation of APIs has also created a much larger attack surface for attackers — and attackers are fully aware of the immense value of the data being transported by APIs. Because they typically transport personally identifiable data (PII) and other critical financial data, APIs represent a highly lucrative target. Cyber criminals can use the information for nefarious purposes, such as ransom or resale on the black market.securitymagazine.com, 13d ago

What is worse: we don’t even want to wish for the scenarios that are laid out within the latest IPCC report as the ones that keep temperatures at a safe level. In those scenarios, somewhere between 25 and 80% of current croplands would have to be diverted to grow crops on a planetary scale to be burned for energy, with the carbon dioxide captured and pumped into geological formations. Intervention on such a futuristic scale will lead to massive water shortages that outweigh the climate benefits, increase hunger, accelerate biodiversity loss and fundamentally threaten basic human rights. We are headed for a world of technological half-measures in the name of a climate emergency that will do too little to stop the further rise in greenhouse gas levels, while accelerating ecosystem destruction and inequalities between rich and poor.resilience, 5d ago

The sex difference in dormancy phenology observed in endotherms and ectotherms may be a widespread consequence of the trade-off between the benefits of being active for reproduction and the benefits of dormancy for survival (viz., the life-history hypothesis). Other non-exclusive hypotheses have also been proposed (Morbey and Ydenberg 2001) and further studies are needed to test them. Energy constraints explain a part of dormancy phenology in both endotherms and ectotherms (Wilsterman et al. 2021), but a large body of evidence from our study shows some independence of energy balance at the specific times of emergence and immergence into hibernation. Thus, we expect that dormancy phenology will exhibit multiple evolutionary causes, especially when many species are studied and compared. The occurance of dormancy at high altitude and latitude where few or no energy resources are available over part of the year appears to be a support for the energy limitation hypothesis (Ruf et al. 2012), although this hypothesis could yet be of limited importance in explaining the phenology of the transition from dormancy to activity and vice-versa. Dormancy in energetically benign periods, but unfavorable for reproduction, may be more widespread than previously thought. Such research highlights the opportunities of studying dormancy across a broad spectrum of species (Wilsterman et al. 2021).elifesciences.org, 5d ago

This insight underscored the importance of adapting flexible strategies to accommodate the evolving needs of the workforce.WGIC - Geospatial in Everything Geospatial for Everyone, 5d ago
Communities and organizations are mobilizing against rare earth mining on the Ampasindava Peninsula in northwestern Madagascar. This area is home to northern Madagascar’s last remaining forests, recognized as a global biodiversity hotspot and home to IUCN-listed endangered and vulnerable species. The well-being of the populations on the peninsula depends largely on the maintenance of these ecosystems, which provide them with numerous products (food, energy, construction materials, pharmacopoeia and sources of income) and ecosystem services (water, protection against cyclones, microclimate, soil fertility). Since 2016, local communities have been opposing the mining project on the basis that it will infringe on many of their human rights. This includes their land rights and livelihoods, as most live mainly from fishing and agriculture—particularly the cultivation of high-value-added export crops such as vanilla, cocoa and coffee that would be put at risk. Since the beginning of the Tantalus Rare Earths Malagasy project –which was acquired by Reenova, then by HARENA Resources Pty Ltd in 2023– it has affected local communities that have denounced the irregular nature of mining permits, neglected test pit rehabilitation work, a lack of local participation and free, prior and informed consent, as well as disregard for the social, human rights and environmental impacts that would result from this project.Foreign Policy In Focus, 6d ago

At the same time, they must also keep pace with local clinical developments, key public health trends, and scientific advances in medicine. The problem is that they can’t possibly process and analyze the sources of this information quickly or efficiently enough to unlock its true value for the people under their care. There are currently two distinct types of remote monitoring services that are reimbursable under the MPFS. Remote physiological monitoring (RPM) uses medical devices to obtain data, such as blood pressure and weight, and transmits it to healthcare providers for review and assessment. Remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) uses non-physiological data to monitor a patient’s health or response to treatment, such as medication adherence, musculoskeletal activity or respiratory activity. Both services use a series of codes that account for initial setup and patient education on the remote monitoring device, transmission of data, and interpretation and analysis of the data by the patient’s healthcare provider.natlawreview.com, 16d ago

By ensuring accessible and quality childcare, a significant burden can be lifted from women, enabling them to pursue careers without the constant juggle of professional and domestic responsibilities. Promoting entrepreneurship among women was another focal point. Initiatives aimed at bolstering women’s entrepreneurship can be aimed at a vast reservoir of untapped potential, driving both economic growth and social justice.
