new ARK’s investment process initially examines from the top-down how the world is changing and where it is headed. ARK employs an open research strategy to gather information, both helping to define and refine its internal research process. Inputs include theme developers who are thought leaders in their fields, social media interactions, and crowd-sourced insights as people respond to ARK’s public research. Using this information in an iterative fashion, ARK’s research and investment team work to “size” and “re-size” the opportunities. As a result of extensive and iterative research steps, ARK anticipates and quantifies multi-year value-chain transformations and market opportunities. Through this process, specific companies percolate to the top as best positioned to benefit from the identified investment premise, at which point ARK begins its bottom-up process. ARK scores potential investments based on key metrics, inputting the values into a proprietary scoring system to quantify the companies in the context of the opportunity. Finally, as the CIO and Portfolio Manager, Catherine Wood has the final accountability for the selection of investments and approval for all investment decisions.Ark Invest, 10h ago
new If the concept of a food supplement in capsule form does not satisfy you, know that you have another alternative that can be incorporated more naturally into your daily life: algae oil. Algae oil is a source of omega-3 fatty acids (especially DHA and less EPA) which has many benefits. It is suitable for vegetarians and vegans who wish to avoid animal products. It is suitable for people allergic to fish or shellfish. The algae are grown in a controlled manner, reducing the impact on marine ecosystems. It does not require antibiotics, pesticides or other chemicals, minimizing water pollution.Archyde, 14h ago
new The gigaprojects then, along with the arts and heritage programmes, are part of a process that brings cultural change, while enforcing the political status quo. They are also happening because Prince Mohammed likes them. If The Line looks like a pharaonic ego trip, Dr Azzam also reports the prince’s interest in the AlUla masterplan, and in such subtler things as the palette of pigments made in the Madrasat Addeera out of multicoloured local rocks. Like many works dictated from above these projects have an erratic relationship to reality and consistency: while The Line verges on the unhinged, it’s also questionable whether five major works of land art plus several museums are best located in AlUla, whose small population and remote location will struggle to handle large visitor numbers. The profligate construction of the gigaprojects, and in some cases the dependency on planes and cars to get to places, will – despite Vision 2030’s claims of sustainability – have a huge and destructive environmental impact.the Guardian, 16h ago
new Plastics contain a mixture of chemical additives that can leach into the environment and potentially cause harmful effects on reproduction and the endocrine system. Two of these chemicals, N-butyl benzenesulfonamide (NBBS) and triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), are among the top 30 organic chemicals detected in surface and groundwater and are currently placed on international watchlist for evaluation. Although bans have been placed on legacy pollutants such as diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), their persistence remains a concern. This study aimed to examine the impact of plastic additives, including NBBS, TPHP, DBP, and DEHP, on the reproductive behaviour and male fertility of the marine amphipod Echinogammarus marinus. Twenty precopulatory pairs of E. marinus were exposed to varying concentrations of the four test chemicals to assess their pairing behaviour. A high-throughput methodology was developed and optimised to record the contact time and re-pair time within 15 min and additional point observations for 96 h. The study found that low levels of NBBS, TPHP, and DEHP prolonged the contact and re-pairing time of amphipods and the proportion of pairs reduced drastically with re-pairing success ranging from 75% to 100% in the control group and 0%–85% in the exposed groups at 96 h. Sperm count declined by 40% and 60% in the 50 μg/l and 500 μg/l DBP groups, respectively, whereas TPHP resulted in significantly lower sperms in 50 μg/l exposed group. Animals exposed to NBBS and DEHP showed high interindividual variability in all exposed groups. Overall, this study provides evidence that plastic additives can disrupt the reproductive mechanisms and sperm counts of amphipods at environmentally relevant concentrations. Our research also demonstrated the usefulness of the precopulatory pairing mechanism as a sensitive endpoint in ecotoxicity assessments to proactively mitigate population-level effects in the aquatic environment.interestingengineering.com, 19h ago

In parallel, strategies to strengthen circular economy systems have received growing attention in recent years. The environmental and economic benefits are manifold: they ensure sound environmental management of waste flows; recover materials that can be substituted for virgin ones, thus alleviating the pressure on resource extraction and lowering the overall environmental impact of value chains; and reduce supply risks and price volatility of raw materials. International circular economy networks offer further advantages, such as the development of economies of scale for waste treatment, waste management technologies, and an outlet for recycled materials (Egger and Keuschnigg 2023, Kojima 2020).CEPR, 10d ago
The demand channel of monetary policy passes through the traction that policy tightening has on spend-ing in the economy. This channel involves mostly core prices rather than energy prices since the latter are more exogenously determined while the former are more elastic to domestic demand. This distinction is particularly pronounced in the post-pandemic period, as energy prices were determined by global factors and amplified by the war in Ukraine, especially in the euro area. Since households in the right tail of the expenditure distribution consume relatively more of the core goods, they also reap more benefits from a stronger monetary policy response in terms of preserving their purchasing power compared with the more vulnerable consumers. To illustrate this channel, we consider a stylised general equilibrium model in which households with different income levels consume different shares of energy and core goods, and the price of energy is exogenously determined. We use Italian data to calibrate the model so that vulnera-ble households represent the first quintile of families in the expenditure distribution. Figure 3 shows the response of the gap between consumer prices for vulnerable and affluent households to a ten per cent in-crease in the price of energy, for different values of the Taylor coefficient on inflation and alternative cali-brations of the policy rate smoothing parameter. Regardless of the degree of monetary policy inertia, a stronger response of monetary policy to inflation causes an increase in the price gap.CEPR, 8d ago
Armed with these powerful new medications, policymakers, physicians, and society can further turn away from championing priorities that will combat the root causes of the obesity epidemic and lead to better health for all, such as restructuring the workweek to help individuals better manage stress and get sufficient sleep, making urban and suburban areas more walkable or rideable, eliminating food deserts, putting stricter regulations on the quality of our water and food, or limiting the quantities of chemicals such as BPAs (which have been implicated as a cause of obesity) in our natural environment.KevinMD.com, 17d ago
Communities and organizations are mobilizing against rare earth mining on the Ampasindava Peninsula in northwestern Madagascar. This area is home to northern Madagascar’s last remaining forests, recognized as a global biodiversity hotspot and home to IUCN-listed endangered and vulnerable species. The well-being of the populations on the peninsula depends largely on the maintenance of these ecosystems, which provide them with numerous products (food, energy, construction materials, pharmacopoeia and sources of income) and ecosystem services (water, protection against cyclones, microclimate, soil fertility). Since 2016, local communities have been opposing the mining project on the basis that it will infringe on many of their human rights. This includes their land rights and livelihoods, as most live mainly from fishing and agriculture—particularly the cultivation of high-value-added export crops such as vanilla, cocoa and coffee that would be put at risk. Since the beginning of the Tantalus Rare Earths Malagasy project –which was acquired by Reenova, then by HARENA Resources Pty Ltd in 2023– it has affected local communities that have denounced the irregular nature of mining permits, neglected test pit rehabilitation work, a lack of local participation and free, prior and informed consent, as well as disregard for the social, human rights and environmental impacts that would result from this project.Foreign Policy In Focus, 6d ago

Economies with high emissions for a given level of energy use tend to be more dependent on coal for their energy. In contrast, economies where renewables account for a large proportion of energy generation (such as Albania, which gets almost all of its energy from hydroelectric power, or Lithuania, where wind and solar power play a significant role) have relatively low emissions for the same level of energy use. On average, differences in the prevalence of various fossil fuels in countries’ fuel mixes can explain around 25% of total cross-country variation in heating-related emissions per capita, and over 40% for emissions caused by the operation of domestic appliances (such as refrigerators and air conditioning units). Higher income per capita and larger dwellings per capita significantly increase demand for heating, accounting for close to 20% of total variation in emissions. Likewise, colder and longer winters can also explain some of the cross-country variation in heating-related emissions (see also Cascarano and Natoli 2023 and Levinson 2013 on the effects of climate on energy demand and housing preferences).CEPR, 11d ago

new People see a rise in menu prices and, if they have no context for the causes, may think that restaurants are raking in profits. But over the past three years, the cost of food, labour and fuel have exploded – well beyond the menu price increases or shrinkflation (i.e. smaller portions) aimed at mitigating theses jumps. Consider the “French fry index,” sales data recently released from restaurant point-of-sale system SpotOn. Between January, 2021, and August, 2023, across the United States, the menu price or French fries has risen an average of 17.5 per cent. Diners are likely to notice that, and possibly resent it. Perhaps even feel that they are owed some free fries. But they are unlikely to be aware that the increased price to them doesn’t come close to making up for higher input costs, in this case fryer oil jumping 36 per cent and russet potatoes a whopping 166 per cent over the same period. Whatever the reason, the restaurateurs I’ve spoken to have seen a rise in diners skipping out on their bills. The Globe and Mail, 1d ago
new The International Energy Agency estimates that more than two-thirds of the methane released from fossil fuel operations can be eliminated. The requirements in the new EPA regulation will help achieve those reductions. They’re also expected to have profound effects on public health. Nearly 18 million people live within a mile of an oil and gas field in the U.S., breathing in a host of toxic chemicals that are released along with methane. Proximity to oil and gas sites has been linked to a host of health effects, including lower lung function, high-risk pregnancies, and preterm birth.Grist, 1d ago

new That’s partly because the role of so-called carbon sinks — the parts of the land and the oceans that absorb more carbon than they emit — might be negatively impacted as the planet warms, diminishing the capacity of natural ecosystems to remove CO2. Scientific research shows that major sinks, such as the oceans and the Amazon, are already capturing less CO2 than they used to and warming could degrade their ability further.calgaryherald, 1d ago
new Under the current international financial architecture, the exploitative dynamics that have plagued poor communities and the Global South during the colonial era persist to this day. Private creditors are taking advantage of low-income countries that rely heavily on external financing to address their development requirements. They argue against debt forgiveness, asserting that it would damage these countries’ reputation with investors and restrict their access to capital markets. However, the current financial system is predominantly configured to uphold the structural power of creditors, prioritizing their interests over those of borrowing nations in the Global South. Consequently, these nations are increasingly at risk of becoming debt colonies, trapped in a cycle of perpetual indebtedness.Modern Diplomacy, 2d ago

Going back to the key issue of plastic consumption and the key driver of government regulation, the climate benefits of these sustainable solutions make them very interesting for future applications, though these technologies need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis to determine their sustainability benefits and economic viability. Still, the market potential for sustainable polymers is massive and has significant momentum behind it. As single-use plastic bans and carbon zero pledges grow in tandem with plastic consumption, the pressure is ever-increasing for materials producers and consumers to transition to more sustainable practices. IDTechEx expects the plastic circular economy to continue gaining traction as sustainability increasingly becomes a corporate and consumer priority, though it still has numerous challenges to overcome to majorly impact the incumbent petrochemical market.Advanced Materials World, 20d ago
...“Because the majority of terrestrial biosphere models used to assess the global carbon sink are located at the lower end of this complexity range, accounting only partially for these mechanisms or ignoring them altogether, it is likely that we are currently underestimating climate change effects on vegetation as well as its resilience to changes in climate. We often think about climate models as being all about physics, but biology plays a huge role and it is something that we really need to account for. These kinds of predictions have implications for nature-based solutions to climate change such as reforestation and afforestation and how much carbon such initiatives can take up. Our findings suggest these approaches could have a larger impact in mitigating climate change and over a longer time period than we thought. However, simply planting trees will not solve all our problems. We absolutely need to cut down emissions from all sectors. Trees alone cannot offer humanity a get out of jail free card.”...Lab Manager, 14d ago
Climate change is not solely responsible for uncommon weather conditions, but it can contribute to the frequency and intensity of certain extreme weather events. Climate change refers to long-term changes in temperature, precipitation, and other atmospheric conditions on Earth. While day-to-day weather variations are influenced by a variety of factors, including natural variability, human activities that release greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide and methane) into the atmosphere can contribute to changes in the climate. The warming of the Earth's surface due to human-induced climate change can lead to shifts in weather patterns. This can result in more frequent and severe heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall, hurricanes, and other extreme events. The specific impact of climate change on weather conditions varies by region, but the overall trend is toward a higher likelihood of extreme weather events. It's important to note that while climate change can influence weather patterns, not every unusual weather event is directly attributable to climate change. Natural variability, local factors, and other influences also play a role in shaping day-to-day weather. Scientists use sophisticated models and statistical analyses to attribute trends in extreme events to climate change, but the complexity of Earth's climate system makes it challenging to attribute any single event solely to climate change. In summary, climate change contributes to changes in long-term weather patterns and increases the likelihood of certain extreme events, but it is not the sole factor influencing day-to-day weather conditions. #ClimateChange #GlobalWarming #ClimateAction #ExtremeWeather #ClimateCrisis #WeatherChanges #ClimateActionNow #ClimateEmergency #UncommonWeather #ClimateResilience #ClimateAwareness #WeatherPatterns #ClimateJustice #SustainableLiving #Adaptation #ClimateSolutions #RenewableEnergy #GreenFuture #ResilientPlanet #ActOnClimate...Energy Central, 6d ago

new A major focus would be on the role of “fossil fuels” and countries’ commitment to phasing out coal, oil, and gas. There had been an agreement to phase down coal use, but not a complete fossil fuel phase-out. The UAE, hosting COP28, is pivotal in this discussion, given its oil interests . Roughly half of the world’s oil and gas comes from developing countries that depend on revenues from fossil fuels and face big obstacles to shifting away from them. In certain emerging economies, real or perceived investor risks increase the cost of capital for a solar farm up to three times more than in rich countries.cnbctv18.com, 2d ago
new The sensor fusion market for automotive in Europe is anticipated to experience heightened demand, primarily driven by stringent safety regulations. The EU has set a targeted goal to reduce fatalities and injuries by 50% by the year 2030. As part of this strategic initiative, the EU has mandated the inclusion of major safety features, including lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and drowsiness and attention detection, in new vehicles. These regulations came into effect in July 2022, reflecting a comprehensive approach to enhance automotive safety. Several European countries, including Germany, France, and the UK, have already granted approval for the utilization of automated vehicles on specific roadways. Notably, Germany took a pioneering step in July 2021 by enacting the Autonomous Driving Act, positioning itself as the first country globally to permit sensor fusion-based level 4 automated vehicles to operate on public roads without the requirement for a human driver as a backup control. In 2015, the French government declared its intention to mandate the installation of automatic emergency braking (AEB) and lane departure warning (LDW) systems in all new heavy trucks, contributing to an increased demand for safety systems within the country. Furthermore, the support from OEMs and the burgeoning presence of numerous startups dedicated to the development of sensor fusion technology are expected to be pivotal factors propelling market growth in the European region.marketsandmarkets.com, 2d ago

Building on the success of 2022’s COP15 biodiversity summit in Montreal, there is also likely to be a bigger focus on nature and biodiversity, as understanding grows that that tackling climate change and protecting nature go hand-in-hand. Linked to this, COP28 will have a greater focus than previous summits on health, and on food systems – both in terms of the risks they face from climate change and their contribution to it (food systems account for around a third of man-made emissions and cause significant loss of biodiversity). Expect a focus on reducing meat and dairy consumption, as well as food waste.innovationforum.co.uk, 3d ago
Some other ideas for progressive economic policy that will address the climate and equity crisis include: creating another tax bracket for high income earners, increasing the corporate tax rate, and reversing more PC cuts. The government must have a climate ‘smart lens’ on all policies, in particular tax policy. It should also introduce taxes to incentivize a just transition in areas like agriculture to limit petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides to encourage a shift to regenerative farming (as well as more ‘sin taxes’ on greenhouse gas emitters like plastics producers and the transportation sector). Sin taxes on tobacco can be replicated on junk food, soft drinks, or gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles like RVs as well as recreational vehicles like quads, speed boats, and jet skis, with tax credits for bicycles, canoes and other non-emitting modes of travel.canadiandimension.com, 13d ago
Through multi-modal transport solutions, including overland and ocean freight, DHL is strategically minimising the environmental impact of F1 logistics. A big green milestone achieved this season is DHL purchasing 18 new trucks running on HVO100 drop-in fuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). These reduce carbon emissions by an average of 83 per cent when compared to conventional fuels such as diesel, without compromising on performance loss as these trucks can cover the same distances and carry the same loads. DHL has over the years introduced the transport of F1 freight with its new Boeing 777s, which is being used to transport deliverables to and from Abu Dhabi while boasting fuel-efficient technology that reduces carbon emissions by 17 per cent over legacy aircraft.Khaleej Times, 9d ago

new The 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) gave the world a surprise on its first day, Thursday. Delegates from more than 160 countries unanimously agreed to formally establish the Loss and Damage Fund, pledging more than $400 million to support the world's particularly vulnerable countries in their efforts to cope with the loss and damage caused by climate change. This groundbreaking progress has brought much-needed good news to the world, raising confidence and expectations for the outcomes of this conference. The issue of funding has been a focal point in recent UN climate conferences, with prolonged and intense debates surrounding the amount of aid and compensation developed countries should offer for their historical emissions, as well as the ways of raising and distributing the funds. However, the urgency of the severe climate change situation has led to significant achievements. Developed countries have committed to mobilizing $100 billion a year to support climate finance. The establishment of the Loss and Damage Fund was a decision made at COP27 in Egypt in 2022, but its implementation has not been easy. Nonetheless, this time, several developed countries have made pledges toward the fund. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), host country of COP28, committed $100 million, Germany, $100 million, the UK, 40 million pounds (about $50.6 million) and 20 million pounds for other arrangements, Japan, $10 million, and the US, known for its grandstanding on climate issues, only $17.5 million. When it comes to paying, some countries revealed their true face. The amount pledged by the US is meager in comparison with its status as the world's largest economy and the responsibility in addressing climate change it should bear given its highest historical cumulative carbon emissions, leading to criticism from attending delegates and experts who deemed it "disappointing," "shocking," and "embarrassing."However, amid this disappointment, there were heartening developments. When the US once again let the world down at the critical moment, other countries stepped up. On the second day of the climate conference, Friday, the UAE announced $30 billion for a new climate finance fund, aiming to mobilize $250 billion by the end of the decade. It also aims to improve the flow of money into projects to reduce emissions, especially in the Global South.Washington should really feel ashamed of this scene. The New York Times bluntly questioned in a September article: How Long Can America's Climate Hypocrisy Last? "It's nothing new for climate ambition and climate hypocrisy to flicker back and forth like the two faces of a lenticular hologram," said the article. Even the American media itself says so, showing how bad the US' performance is on climate issues.Another typical example is the deliberate effort by the US to woo Pacific island nations, establishing new embassies and claiming to help them maintain "maritime security." However, when it comes to the climate issues that these countries genuinely care about, Washington exhibits conspicuous stinginess and parsimony. The true focus of Washington in its diplomacy is becoming increasingly evident to people. At any rate, the US cannot be absent when addressing the issue of climate. Even if other countries are proactive, they cannot fill the irresponsible void left by the US. Conversely, if the US fails to set an example on climate issues, it completely loses its qualification to pursue global leadership. In any case, the US must shoulder its due obligations and responsibilities. The Democratic Party shows a more positive attitude toward climate issues than the Republican Party. The Biden administration should take advantage of its time in office to push for substantive progress on climate issues with greater determination and force. This current climate conference's crucial agenda is the "Global Stocktake," where each contracting party will review progress and gaps in implementing key provisions of the Paris Agreement. The focus will also be on "four paradigm shifts": fast-tracking energy transition and slashing emissions before 2030; transforming climate finance, by delivering on old promises and setting the framework for a new deal on finance; putting nature, people, lives and livelihoods at the heart of climate action; mobilizing for the most inclusive COP ever. These are ambitious goals indeed. In the realm of climate, every step forward is incredibly challenging. It is precisely because of this difficulty that each achievement is so valuable. Regardless, we observe that human society is moving forward step by step, even though the pace is still too slow and lags behind the rate of environmental degradation. How to ensure that this collective effort of all humanity involves less short-term selfish calculations and more long-term vision of shared future, and stronger climate actions, is crucial for the future and fate of humanity. No one can escape or evade this duty, especially for countries with significant responsibilities and obligations.globaltimes.cn, 2d ago

new It’s surprising, observes Peter, how many massive businesses don’t have “a grip” on their plastic use. However, while he appreciates activism, he doesn’t encourage demonizing the business world for its role in the crisis. “If we think that business is doomed, then we are doomed,” he says. “Business is part and parcel of our society today. new An important component of that program was a shift away from what Edinger called “suggestion box culture,” empowering staff to make process improvements on their own. The approach was successful in Denver, and while Edinger said it will not be identical for OIT, he wants to use employee expertise to hone government service delivery. After only a week in the job, he is still focused on learning as much as possible about his new agency. This involves asking questions about existing processes and goals so that his future work can help align the agency need with the goals of Gov. Jared Polis. Specifically, the governor’s top five statewide priorities include energy, health, crime prevention, land use and tax reform.“When I made the leap from a city like Denver, the capital city, to the actual capital, then you know that the challenges change a little bit,” he said, highlighting not just the difference in scale but also the unique needs of different parts of the state. For example, Denver is composed of 78 unique neighborhoods, but Edinger said the municipality makes up less than 1 percent of the state geographically.GovTech, 2d ago

Attention is growing, however, on the harm that nuclear weapons have already done, mostly focused on the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and on nuclear testing impacts. This seminar offers a nuclear justice lens derived from concepts of transitional justice (TJ). Traditionally applied in the context of human rights violations the analytical and normative framework can be used to study the nuclear past and present efforts to address it. We propose to understand nuclear harm as a form of “systemic wrongdoing”. Specifically, recent work by TJ scholars on colonial crimes and post-colonial injustice bears direct relevance for discussions on nuclear justice. We use the different “pillars” of TJ – criminal liability, redress, truth-telling, and reform – to analyze the progress made since the start of the nuclear age in addressing nuclear injustice and to identify gaps and potentials for political and legal action. The seminar builds on the 2021 Peace Research Institute Frankfurt report Beyond the Ban: A Global Agenda for Nuclear Justice.Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, 3d ago
The stocking density for broilers can vary significantly depending on bird size, nutrition, breed, feeder space, drinker space, house dimensions, bird welfare and economic return. Nowadays, modern broiler houses allow for higher densities as long as the environment is maintained correctly. The use of organic acids can further mitigate inflammation responses, restore gut health and growth performance.Poultry World, 3d ago

Despite commitments to scale up and speed up climate action, the fiscal cost of government support for fossil fuels almost doubled in 2022 to reach more than USD 1.4 trillion as governments across the OECD and partner countries introduced substantial initiatives to mitigate high energy costs on households and firms, caused in part by Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. This rising trend is a real threat to our collective net zero goals and highlights the challenges of staying on track with net zero commitments in the face of geopolitical and economic disruption. Going forward, it will be critical that support measures are reformed to better target those most in need. Support for fossil fuels should also be phased out as soon as possible. This will help free up much needed resources for the transition towards net zero emissions and accelerate innovation to improve energy efficiency.oecd-ilibrary.org, 3d ago
On a total installed cost basis, we'd be highly competitive with the other technologies. That's due to the intrinsic simplification of our technology and the use of low-cost, earth-abundant materials. We don't have any of the supply chain constraints of some technologies that use, for example, iridium. [Our dependence] is largely on things like steel, nickel, polymers -- materials that have large, scalable supply chains.spglobal.com, 3d ago
Newswise — In today's medical landscape, antibiotics are pivotal in combatting bacterial infections. These potent compounds, produced by bacteria and fungi, act as natural defenses against microbial attacks. A team of researchers delved into the intricate world of glycopeptide antibiotics – a vital resource in countering drug-resistant pathogens – to uncover their evolutionary origins. Dr. Demi Iftime and Dr. Martina Adamek headed this interdisciplinary project, guided by Professors Evi Stegmann and Nadine Ziemert from the “Controlling Microbes to Fight Infections” Cluster of Excellence at the University of Tübingen, with support from Professor Max Cryle and Dr. Mathias Hansen from Monash University in Australia.Using advanced bioinformatics, the team sought to decipher the chemical blueprint of ancient glycopeptide antibiotics. By understanding their evolutionary trajectory, the researchers were looking for insights that could steer the development of future antibiotics for medical applications. The team’s study has been published in the latest edition of Nature Communications.Tracing an Evolutionary Path“Antibiotics emerge from an ongoing evolutionary tug-of-war between different organisms, each striving to outmaneuver or curtail the spread of their adversaries,” explains Evi Stegmann. To explore this, the researchers utilized the glycopeptide antibiotics teicoplanin and vancomycin, along with related compounds sourced from specific bacterial strains. These compounds, built from amino acids and sugars, disrupt bacterial cell wall construction, ultimately leading to bacterial death. Notably, teicoplanin and vancomycin exhibit this potency against numerous human pathogens. In simplified terms, scientists often organize species into an evolutionary tree structure to illustrate their relationships. Similarly, the research team constructed a family tree of known glycopeptide antibiotics, linking their chemical structures via gene clusters that encode their blueprints. Employing bioinformatics algorithms, they deduced a putative ancestral form of these antibiotics – which they dubbed “paleomycin.” By reconstructing the genetic pathways they believed to produce paleomycin, the team successfully synthesized the compound, which displayed antibiotic properties in tests. “Recreating such an ancient molecule was exhilarating, akin to bringing dinosaurs or wooly mammoths back to life,” remarks Ziemert.Connecting Evolution to Practicality“One intriguing finding is that all glycopeptide antibiotics stem from a common precursor,” Stegmann says. “Moreover, the core structure of paleomycin mirrors the complexity seen in teicoplanin, while vancomycin exhibits a simpler core. We speculate that recent evolution streamlined the latter’s structure, yet its antibiotic function remained unchanged,” Ziemert adds. This family of antibiotics – though beneficial for bacteria producing them – demand substantial energy due to their complex chemical composition. Streamlining this complexity while retaining efficacy could confer an evolutionary advantage. The researchers meticulously traced the evolution of these antibiotics and their underlying genetic sequences, investigating pivotal steps required for creating functional molecules. In collaboration with Australian scientists, some of these steps were replicated in laboratory settings. “This journey through time revealed profound insights into the evolution of bacterial antibiotic pathways and nature's optimization strategies, leading to modern glycopeptide antibiotics,” says Ziemert. “This provides us with a solid foundation for advancing this crucial antibiotic group using biotechnology.”...newswise.com, 3d ago
The report offers a practical guide to help countries address political economy barriers when implementing climate policies with three prongs: (1) Climate Governance: governments can adapt their institutional framework, in ways that fit with the pre-existing political economy and moving from opportunistic and unstable to strategic and stable climate institutions. Establishing strategic climate governance institutions – such as climate change framework laws, long-term strategies, or just transition frameworks - can alter the political economy, set clear objectives, improve coordination across actors, and improve the ability to monitor progress and hold decisionmakers accountable. (2) Policy Sequencing: policies can be prioritized and sequenced based on dynamic efficiency, considering not only the economic costs and benefits, but also their feasibility and long-term impact on the political economy. The Climate Policy Feasibility Frontier tool can help identify policies that can overcome short-term political economy obstacles, and at the same time improve capacities and change the political economy to facilitate further climate action. (3) Policy Design and Engagement, considers the effective implementation of climate reforms by tactically navigating political economy constraints. This involves engaging citizens to create process legitimacy and reducing and managing distributional effects, not only across but also within income groups.worldbank.org, 3d ago
Organisations like the Carbon Trust and their Footprint label scheme help to provide consumers at all levels with information so that they can make informed specification and purchasing decisions, and it should come as no surprise that energy efficiency has become a significant focus for today’s markets, especially considering the UK’s Government’s drive towards net zero by 2050. The efficiency of electrical equipment can play a crucial role in reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. However, not all electronic products are created equally regarding energy consumption.pressat.co.uk, 3d ago
F-gases have been manufactured for refrigeration and other applications since the early 20th century. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were widely used as a refrigerant until countries agreed in the 1987 Montreal Protocol to phase out their use due to their degrading effect on the ozone. This phase-out is expected to avoid as much as 0.5°C of warming this century, although CFCs are still illegally being produced in some countries. The most common replacement for CFCs, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), do not degrade the ozone, but have a warming effect that is hundreds or thousands of times more potent than CO2. In 2016, countries agreed to amend the Montreal Protocol to begin phasing out HFC’s as well.New Scientist, 3d ago

In the modern world, we are increasingly dependent on technological infrastructure such as power grids, communication systems, and satellites. However, this dependency makes us increasingly vulnerable to the effects of large geomagnetic storms. "The longer the power supply could be cut off, the more society, especially those living in urban areas, will struggle to cope," Designated Assistant Professor Hayakawa, the lead author of the study, explains. Such storms could be big enough to knock out the power grid, communication systems, airplanes, and satellites in the worst case. "Could we maintain our life without such infrastructure?" Hayakawa comments: "Well, let us just say that it would be extremely challenging."...ScienceDaily, 3d ago
On 3 October 2023, the Government of Pakistan announced plans to repatriate 'illegal foreigners".' In view of the ongoing humanitarian and human rights concerns for Afghans, particularly for women and girls,UNHCR and 10M issued a joint statement urging Pakistan to maintain the protection space for Afghans in need of safety. This was followed by a joint statement by UNHCR. 10M. and UNICEF which appealed for the protection of children and families seeking safety in Pakistan. On 10 November. UNHCR declared an internal Level 2 emergency for Pakistan and Afghanistan for six months to scale up the humanitarian response in light of the rapidly evolving situation. Population trends during the reporting period indtated that most returns were voluntary although deportations through Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossing points were also recorded. People arriving at the borderare exhausted and require urgent assistance as well as psychosocial support. Arrivals back to Afghanistan are also adding to the worsening humanitarian crisis, as winter temperatures start to dip to -4T in some locations. Many Afghan retumees are vulnerable. including women and children who could lose their lives in a harsh winter if left without adequate shelter. 1.3 million undocumented Afghans are estimated to reside in Pakistan. Approximately 720.000 undocumented individuals and 50.000 assisted voluntary repatriations (Proof of Registration (FOR) cardholders) are expected to require support at border points from now through July 2024. The sudden surge in returns in recent weeks is putting pressure an already strained resources, including shelter and basic services. Additional support is urgently required. UNHCR and partners in Pakistan and Afghanistan are currently working together to ensure a harmonized and coordinated cross-border response to this new emergency. To support these efforts. an interagency Border Consortium Appeal was launched on 8 November. In addition. UNHCR and partners are also stepping up their presence in and around Torkham and Chaman border crossing points and accelerating efforts to ensure protection-sensitive mechanisms are in place via regular border monitoring visits and protection screenings to identify and assist people with heightened vUlner[abilities and needs.ReliefWeb, 3d ago
Under this framework, we find robust evidence of substantial economic impact. As shown in Figure 1, higher technology similarity between a borrower and its bank’s recent borrowers is negatively associated with loan spread. Moreover, this negative relation is statistically significant in a multivariate regression controlling for a wide range of borrower characteristics, loan characteristics, relationship lending, as well as an array of fixed effects such as borrower industry-year fixed effects, bank fixed effects, loan type and purpose fixed effects. Specifically, in our baseline model, a slight increase in our measure—just a one standard deviation rise—equates to about a four basis point reduction in loan spreads. In practical terms, it amounts to an annual loan cost-saving of approximately $170,000 for a mean (median) loan of $425 (166) million dollars in our sample. This isn't just a marginal reduction; it's a tangible economic benefit that enhances borrowers' bottom lines. Simultaneously, it allows banks to more effectively attract borrowers who align with their technological expertise, ultimately strengthening the overall financial ecosystem.CEPR, 3d ago

Since 2021, there has been a growing demand for a precautionary pause, moratorium, or ban on deep sea mining as states seek to ensure that in keeping with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the creation of this industry does not commence until there is enough scientific research to determine whether or not it can be done without damaging this very important resource. Several countries, especially those from the global south, are also keen to ensure that any benefits derived from the industry in this global common are for the use of all humankind and not just a select group of countries. To date, 24 countries, including the United Kingdom, a sponsor of deep sea mining licences, along with a significant number of small island developing states (SIDS), which are most likely to be impacted by deep sea mining, have joined this call for a moratorium of deep sea mining. They are joined over 700 scientists who have cautioned that deep sea mining should be approached with extreme caution, considering the inevitable and possibly irreversible loss of biodiversity that may occur.jamaica-gleaner.com, 29d ago

Surprisingly, a staggering 70% of businesses fail to achieve a 40% equipment efficiency rate due to inadequate collection and analysis of information from their industrial machines. Still, in 1 out of 3 cases, data collection is done manually, leading to misinterpretation of data that is not reliable for strategic enterprise development. Since OEE directly impacts profitability, manufacturing companies must adopt effective strategies to manage their production machines and maximise their profits. According to report by McKinsey, the potential economic value of the Internet of Things (IoT) in factory environments could range between $1.4 trillion and $3.3 trillion by 2030. The greatest potential for value creation in these environments lies in optimising manufacturing operations, which involves efficiently managing various assets and personnel on a day-to-day basis.TechRound, 14d ago

...“Once again, we are pleased to report solid results for our third fiscal quarter 2023 with Revenues, net of $11.1 million and Net Income attributable to common shareholders of $3.1 million, both sequential improvements from the prior quarter. Even in the face of high inflation, resilient economic activity in many parts of the world has resulted in good demand for transportation fuels. Favorable market fundamentals continue to be supported by low inventories of a number of refined petroleum products. More significantly, the impact of the war in the Ukraine has extended market dislocation, including arbitrage opportunities, as well as redirected trade flows from shorter-hauls to longer distances resulting in ton-mile expansion of seaborne cargoes, thereby reducing available vessel capacity. Consequently, the chartering outlook for product tankers remains healthy and asset values high, reflecting a sustainable and constructive environment for the sector. However, expanding geo-political events, such as the recent Israeli-Hamas conflict, have created far reaching and uncertain implications worldwide and increased market volatility within our sector. Sadly, weather and climate developments, such as the drought affecting transits through the Panama Canal, only add to this complexity.hellenicshippingnews.com, 13d ago

Over the past several years an additional influence on shipowners’ newbuilding order decisions affecting the fleet’s evolution has come to the forefront. There has been an intensifying focus on decarbonising the world merchant ship fleet, and the fuels and technology required to achieve this aim. Some owners have decided to use a specific alternative fuel in new ships, or at least to include the option of using it in the future. By contrast many other owners apparently have been deterred from or at least have hesitated in placing orders, because of extreme uncertainty about the fuels that will be acceptable over a typical vessel lifetime of up to twenty five years.hellenicshippingnews.com, 3d ago
Commercial maritime fouling has a substantial impact on the environment, as it requires more energy to overcome friction and maintain a desired speed. According to a report by the IMO, a thin layer of slime covering half of a hull surface can increase GHG emissions by 25 to 30 percent. When more severe fouling conditions are present, such as barnacles or tube worms, emissions can increase by up to 55 percent. Therefore, biofouling management is an essential factor for reducing the environmental impact and operational costs of commercial shipping. A notable aspect of ultrasonic antifouling is that it does not make use of toxic substances and requires no additional consumables; systems are plug-and-play and require no equipment maintenance. Hull Shield systems provide the means to lower fossil fuel emissions without introducing additional toxins and pollution into the water. As the costs of publishing increase, the costs are increasingly falling on individual researchers and institutions. We believe that if researchers are forced to make up for lost subscription revenue, a new kind of inequity will result. For example, author processing charges (APCs), which have evolved as an open access alternative revenue model to page charges and library subscriptions, have become increasingly expensive and created financial barriers for researchers from underserved populations, including early career researchers, those from historically excluded backgrounds, those at less research-intensive institutions and with limited resources and those living in the global south. We know that the scientific community does not want to disadvantage our colleagues in these institutions and countries by this approach.ASM.org, 21d ago
There are many factors that could influence the effectiveness of a warning label on a product. For example, as basic as it sounds, pictures make a difference. “We do know for tobacco in the UK that when images became mandatory alongside the text, labels got more effective,” Hughes explains. Douglas Kris: Sure, Jordan. Appreciate that because it's a great observation. We are different than a lot of the other E&Ps that a number of your viewers are going to see at this conference over the next couple of days, and the U.S. landscape as well. So Diversified really is a reliable energy producer that's focused on a stewardship model. We, rather than focus on drilling wells, we're a hundred percent focused on acquiring existing non-core producing assets from other operators where those assets might have now become non-core to them. We really invest in those assets once we acquire them to operationally improve them, as well as improve the environmental performance of those assets. We really focus as well on the risks involved in the E&P business, which differentiates us from other operators as well. We've eliminated a lot of the traditional risks, commodity price risk. We hedge about eighty-five percent of our production on a year-over-year basis, giving us certainty of cash flows.Hart Energy, 4d ago
Qualitative interviews revealed that MSMEs and KOLs have a fair understanding of sustainability but lack a holistic and contextual comprehension of the concept. This gap is influenced by several barriers, including cost implications for both businesses and consumers, fear and resistance to change, pressures from competition and profitability, and resource constraints. However, there are also enablers that can foster sustainability. These encompass regulatory policies and frameworks that create the right ecosystem, sustainable financing that provides a ‘push’ effect, and the necessity for collaboration among stakeholders to drive sustainability. Visionaries, typically medium-sized businesses, grapple with significant pressure from global partners to adopt sustainability standards. However, they are often hindered by a lack of technical knowledge.mid-east.info, 4d ago

The assessment of long term health impacts from air pollution, based on numerous epidemiological cohort studies, has become part of the regular disease burden updates of the GBD. In the past decades, since about 1990, disease burden assessments have increasingly acknowledged air pollution as a major global health risk factor. However, the diverse methods of such assessments translate into substantial heterogeneity between published results because a common standard has yet to be formulated.38 Differences between assessments are primarily associated with exposure data, relative risk functions, counterfactual concentration levels, and the health outcomes associated with air pollution (eg, all cause versus disease specific mortality).839 We used updated methods and data sources, but differences in published results about the health benefits of controlling air pollution remain challenging to communicate. Therefore, mortality burden results were recommended to be complemented with the number of deaths that could be prevented by reducing air pollution to promote the understanding of implications.39 Our results contribute in this respect, also because the fractional change in attributable mortality does not depend on the total number of deaths. Nevertheless, assumptions about emission reductions are also associated with uncertainty. Future projections involve socioeconomic, technological, demographic, and policy developments that are hard to foresee. The BMJ, 5d ago
Newswise — Natural disasters are occurring more frequently, causing damage to the power grid and leading to widespread and prolonged power outages. Leveraging mobile power sources has shown potential in lessening the impact of these disasters; however, their efficiency remains largely unassessed. An article published in the Journal of Economy and Technology proposed, for the first time, a theoretical framework for evaluating the utilization efficiency of mobile power sources. The study emphasizes that deploying mobile power sources not only affects the grid's structure but also impacts the survival of critical facilities.“Mobile power sources generate electricity through vehicle-mounted generators and connect to the power grid to provide reliable emergency power to critical facilities such as hospitals,” explained corresponding author of the study, Yunhe Hou, an associate professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Hong Kong. “Therefore, as an essential disaster prevention measure, investing in mobile emergency power sources is particularly important for improving the power grid's survivability and rapid recovery capability during disasters.”...newswise.com, 6d ago

As they are becoming increasingly prevalent in the food chain, scientists and health professionals have focused more attention on the potential health risks for humans.Geoengineering Watch, 9d ago
Meanwhile, the relatively lucrative, low-skilled jobs that communities in mining zones have historically used to justify their social and environmental impacts will disappear. Like the job of driving a huge-haul truck—an occupation that is dangerous, monotonous, and relatively well paid. Mining companies will promote increased automation as a boon to health and safety, because there will be fewer humans on mine sites to get hurt. But as technology replaces the menial jobs of the past, these companies will need to face the prospect of alternate forms of compensation in mining zones—perhaps making payments as community dividends, equity ownership, or even a “universal basic income”—in order to keep the peace with locals. The Walrus, 12d ago
State and local governments rely on municipal bonds to finance investments in infrastructure. They are often complex financial products, specifying a variety of special provisions, such as flexible maturities and unique redemption clauses. Such provisions in a bond may be tailored to the financial needs of investors and the issuing local government, but they may also make it difficult to evaluate and compare alternatives. Using detailed data on bond transactions, the project will quantify the effects of bond provisions on market liquidity, intermediary competition, and cost of local government funding. The insight from this analysis will have implications for policies on municipal bond market structure, the cost of local government funding, and infrastructure investment costs.NBER, 18d ago
The usage of AI helps improve energy efficiency by identifying energy conservation measures as well as areas that require to be improved upon. The downside impacts that have been felt, however, are largely related to raw material cost inflation and disruption amongst global supply chains. Indeed, there is little doubt that these supply chains are continuing to suffer ongoing impacts in the post-pandemic world, exacerbated by geopolitical factors such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine which has led in turn to further economic consequences, not least the rise in energy prices and consequent calculative inflationary effects. It is within this context that we have sought the views of our European data centre participants, 3,500 senior professionals, on a variety of supply chain topics.Intelligent Data Centres, 4d ago
...“Most ocean regions in the tropics have relatively low levels of phytoplankton biomass, but they typically increase as you get closer to islands, like Hawaiʻi,” said Dr. Jonathan Whitney, research ecologist with the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and co-lead of the project. “These phytoplankton hotspots near islands are especially critical for supporting island ecosystems, as they provide more food for small fish and ultimately top predators such as tunas, sharks, and whales.” Scientists are studying phytoplankton distributions and gathering information on key ocean conditions such as temperature, oxygen, and salinity. This information helps them understand the underlying drivers of ecosystem health and estimate how climate change will impact local ecosystems in the coming decades.NOAA, 4d ago
The ability to work from anywhere in the world is not just a perk for individuals; it’s becoming a strategic consideration for countries looking to attract global talent and stimulate their local economies. However, this also brings challenges. High minimum income requirements in some countries, like Iceland, might be counterproductive to reaping the potential economic benefit of embracing digital nomads. Additionally, the differences in internet infrastructure, as seen in Cyprus, is highly counterproductive to remote workers, who rely on fast internet to perform their jobs productively. There are likely many other factors, but the ones analyzed in Visa Guide’s report will definitely play a major role in determining the success of these programs.Allwork.Space, 4d ago
The first step is to assess and prioritize the material ESG issues for your company. Material means financially material in the short- and long-term for your company and for other stakeholders such as workers and society. In addition, materiality includes issues that your company significantly impacts and issues that have or could have an impact on your company. For example, an oil and gas company has a material impact on climate change, but climate change will also have a material impact on the company as governments legislate a low-carbon economy and citizens sue energy companies. This happened in the successful class action suit filed in the Netherlands, ruling in 2021 that Shell was “obliged” to reduce (Dutch) the carbon dioxide emissions of its activities by 45 percent at the end of 2030 over 2019 levels.Zephyrnet, 4d ago
...“At Chemours, we are dedicated to harnessing the power of our chemistry to create a more sustainable and circular future,” Joe Martinko, president of thermal and specialized solutions at Chemours, said in a statement. “We have committed to, and are advancing, significant emission reduction within our gates. Now, we’re expanding our focus to emission reduction throughout the product lifecycle. F-gases — unlike so-called ‘natural’ alternatives — can be recovered, reclaimed, and reused across multiple applications, maximizing resource efficiency, minimizing waste, and lowering emissions. This international F-gas Lifecycle Program will help advance circularity and sustainability around the world, ultimately supporting global climate targets and minimizing impact on our shared planet.”...Environment+Energy Leader, 4d ago

Previous models simulate flooding according to the principle of a uniform spread of water when storm surges hit the coast. In the current, process-based modelling, the researchers now also take into account the temporal course of storm surges as well as the attenuation of the surge with its currents and peak water levels when it hits areas of varying roughness, such as wetlands, forests or paved soils. "Compared to previous supra-regional or continental studies, our coastal flooding model is the first to use high-resolution terrain data from state and regional dikes with a resolution of one metre for the entire German Baltic Sea coast. This enabled us to assess the effectiveness of existing and raised dikes on the one hand and of managed realignment on the other. However, based on current defence lines, both will probably not be sufficient to withstand the ongoing sea level rise," says coastal geographer Kiesel.ScienceDaily, 4d ago
The competitive disadvantage stems from industries in areas with lax carbon regulations incurring lower environmental compliance costs, enabling them to produce goods and services more cost-effectively. In essence, while environmentally conscious policies benefit the planet, they present economic challenges for regions or industries committed to sustainability. This disparity may prompt a shift in economic activities as industries seek locations with less demanding environmental regulations, potentially impacting Indonesia’s economic vitality and job market adhering to strict carbon constraints. Furthermore, the condition may also trigger economic inefficiencies, as companies perpetuate a reliance on high-emission production methods.Modern Diplomacy, 5d ago
Experts have stressed that the increase in stomach cancer cases in India is the result of a combination of factors, including unhealthy lifestyle choices, elevated stress levels, genetic predisposition, and the consumption of junk food. Besides, distinct dietary practices, notably a preference for spicy and preserved foods, coupled with alcohol intake, significantly contribute to the relatively elevated rates of stomach cancer in the country, as underscored by healthcare professionals.indiatvnews.com, 5d ago
From media headlines, most people believe that markets foster crime. In fact, markets cut crime: ‘Historians combing the archives of medieval European towns estimate an annual homicide rate of about 50 per 100,000 residents. … and by the time of the great market takeover it was below 10 per 100,000. By around 1880, the annual homicide rate in London was less than 2 per 100,000 and headed lower. … Markets also broaden social webs, strengthen bonds, and foster moral behavior. So the market takeover transforms the moral system’ (Friedman & McNeill 2013, p.160-1). One important channel through which markets reduce crimes is by increasing per-capita incomes (the section on “Efficiency of Market Exchange” on p.6), making people having less need to commit crimes and face higher costs of doing so. In addition, see the old doux- commerce thesis on the civilizing effects (making people gentle, honest and peaceful) of market relations which increase morality and reduce crimes (e.g. Hirschman 1982, 2013). Berggren & Nilsson (2013) and Prasad (2012) also argue that economic freedom, trade openness and the removal of controls in particular, fosters tolerance and reduce violent crime. Zak (2011) argues that, not only is moral behavior necessary for the proper functioning of markets, but markets also strengthen moral values.Open Access Government, 5d ago
As a global diversified pharmaceuticals company, we work with a wide array of customers—from the largest to the smallest—to provide patients with high quality, affordable medicines. In terms of the biggest challenges broadly facing the industry today, there are chronic supply shortages, including essential medicines that serve as the backbone of the U.S. pharmaceutical industry. Continued pressure on generic margins by the healthcare industry has left many manufacturers with little choice but to discontinue unprofitable products and reduce R&D spend in the U.S. in favor of more complex products and investment elsewhere. These economic pressures have been a key contributing factor for chronic drug shortages in the market.Drug Store News, 5d ago
Rising CO2 emissions worldwide are responsible for increasing climate impacts, such as droughts, floods, cyclones, wildfires, and other extreme events (IPCC 2021). Traditionally, economic growth has improved living standards in many nations, but it has also led to higher CO2 emissions and the depletion of natural resources (Adom et al. 2012). As we are still largely dependent on fossil fuels for our energy needs, higher economic activity leads to higher energy use, consequently increasing emissions. In 2021, global CO2 emissions linked to energy consumption witnessed a notable increase of 6 per cent, reaching a record high of 36.3 billion tonnes. This rise can be attributed to the robust recovery of the world economy following the COVID-19 crisis, along with a heavy reliance on coal (IEA 2022).CEEW, 5d ago

When investing in low-melt batch inclusion bags, there are important factors to take into account. Firstly, consider the bag’s physical properties, including tensile strength and elongation, as these aspects can impact its performance. Second, evaluate the chemical resistance of the film, as some chemicals may lead to the degradation of the packaging material before the contents are introduced into the mixer. Third, cost is a significant consideration; generally, bags with lower melting points tend to be more expensive. It’s crucial to strike a balance between these factors to choose the right inclusion bags for your specific application.marketresearchblog.org, 5d ago
The awareness about the impact of generic and biosimilar medicines on the sustainability of the health system has been increased. However, the introduction of unsustainable cost containment measures such as clawbacks (in Portugal we have a pharmaceutical industry contribution that has been in force since 2015) and inefficient procurement mechanisms to reduce pharmaceutical expenditure has led to withdrawals of products and companies from the market.PharmaBoardroom, 5d ago

The ongoing war in Ukraine has become a contributor to climate change itself. Over the course of the first seven months of the war, military confrontation contributed to the release of an estimated 100 million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere. The as-yet unattributed attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022 caused the biggest-ever single source release of methane. As the war continues, such environmental degradation is likely to be compounded by short-term efforts by countries to shore up energy supplies. Many countries—whether scrambling to close gaps caused by divestment from Russian energy suppliers or using cheaper fuels as a result of global energy market fluctuations—are turning to coal and LNG, both of which have larger carbon footprints than piped gas. Inside Ukraine, around 90 percent of wind power and 50 percent of solar power have been taken off-line since the start of the war, leading to greater reliance on non-renewable sources. Other major consuming countries, notably those in Asia, have increased their use of Russian energy. India has repeatedly signaled its interest and intent in expanding its economic engagement with Russia, which remains the source of around 85 percent of Indian oil imports. China’s Russian energy imports have increased by more than half since the beginning of the war, underscoring energy’s continued impact on geopolitical alliances.foreignpolicy.com, 12d ago
Situating development historically is fraught with tensions and challenges yet essential to achieving social justice and to right the wrongs of the past. The lure of amnesia, temporal distancing and limited historical analysis has meant that mainstream development discourse has been largely silent about its colonial past while simultaneously privileging the future. This has effectively swept away the ample evidence that present day development is founded upon relations, perceptions, and attitudes of empire. Additionally, the future orientation of development, most profoundly exemplified through the imperative to achieve goals and targets, closes off options to address past injustices. This lecture considers these different development temporalities in light of the problems they create for thinking about decoloniality and justice. Indeed, I argue that conceiving of the past as irrelevant has devastating consequences for our concerns for justice. I will go on to show how decolonising development demands consideration of the past that goes beyond the symbolic to perform the critical, material work of redistribution. In this context, I offer ways to redress inequalities reproduced today as the past continues to push unfinished into the present and to unfold new radical, progressive insights. I will consider both the repatriation of appropriated material resources, and the power of stories to identify how those formerly colonised confront their entanglement in processes through which they have become defined and confined.University of York, 11d ago
Once one of the world's largest lakes, the Aral Sea used to supply the Soviet Union with tens of thousands of tons of fish every year. But in the 1960s, after the Soviet Union diverted away rivers for irrigation and agriculture, its water levels dwindled. In the span of two decades — the sea became saltier, killing off fish and destroying the fishing industry. Efforts from bordering regions have varied, with very different outcomes on each side of the sea. In 2005, the government of Kazakhstan, with help from the World Bank, built a dam that rejuvenated parts of the lake — but mostly on the Kazakhstan side. On the Uzbekistan side — in the northernmost Karakalpakstan region — the Aral Sea still remained largely barren...a basin with little water. Karakalpaks living around it have lost nearly all access to water, and along with it, agricultural farming, economic opportunities, and their way of living. Over the years, desertification has profoundly altered the climate and there has been an increase in pollutants and toxic dust. Studies show that people there suffer from elevated rates of tuberculosis and cancer as well as increasing maternal and infant mortality rates — which are higher in Karakalpakstan than in the rest of Uzbekistan. At a time when climate change-related events are becoming more frequent, Kipnis will travel to Karakalpakstan to tell a cautionary tale: the long-term human costs of a water crisis.NPR, 19d ago
Controlled environmental agriculture encompasses a range of techniques, including hydroponics, aquaponics and vertical farming, that enable the cultivation of crops in optimized environments. While CEA systems offer advantages such as reduced water usage, increased crop yields and protection against extreme weather conditions, they are power-intensive operations. The energy required for lighting, temperature control, ventilation and irrigation can significantly increase operational costs and environmental impact. Solving this problem can be a daunting journey that many companies struggle to start. That’s where EnTech Solutions can help with our Path to Smarter Energy™ (PTSE), which provides a step-by-step customized energy solution to meet your goals, no matter how small or how complex they may be.altenergymag.com, 27d ago
Despite the insistence from the majority of community solar providers, the IRS prohibited the use of self-attestation as an approved method to qualify low-income residents. Rather, the IRS now requires that low-income individuals provide evidence of their low-income status, such as tax returns or EBT cards. Asking for this sensitive information can be deeply uncomfortable and even dehumanizing, which seems contrary to the overall objective of making solar more inclusive. This requirement, frustratingly, further ignores the lessons learned in mature community solar markets which required the inclusion of low-income participants. For instance, New Jersey and Maryland had banned self-attestation in its initial community solar pilot programs, only to reverse course and emphatically support the use of self-attestation to qualify low-income subscribers in their respective final community solar program rules. It is a perverse outcome when we place more burden on those that have the greatest need.Solar Power World, 17d ago

The New York Declaration highlights the importance of addressing environmental issues, including water security. “We are invested in enhancing Central Asia’s water security and environmental quality, working to increase regional cooperation on water and ecological issues,” explains the joint document. Specific areas mentioned include the development of climate-adaptable agriculture, preserving endangered species habitats, improving water resource management, and introducing water-saving technologies to Central Asia. The US Agency for International Development (USAID) is mentioned as a vital player, as the Agency’s Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity program will be the catalyst for Washington to engage Central Asia to “address water, energy, food, and environmental needs that simultaneously combat climate change.”...E-International Relations, 5d ago
Snake species are known for preying on mice and other small rodents, helping keep pest population under control. According to an August 2019 study in the journal Molecules, scientists have been successful in using snake venom to create new medicines with wildly beneficial results – the control of high blood pressure, breaking up of blood clots, and reduction in the risk of heart attacks. It’s worth letting kids know that humans are snakes’ predators, and not the other way around. Even venomous snakes try to remain still, and avoid making their presence known, when human beings pass by in their vicinity. One way of teaching kids the value of snakes is by focusing on non-venomous species like garter snakes and corn snakes. You could encourage them to interact with them at the zoo, and point out the various patterns on their skin, so they appreciate that even snakes can be wonderful.gulfnews.com, 5d ago
What is important for some groups at the local level is to have access to jobs, and the mine does provide a number of these, both direct and ancillary through other services that supply the mine and its workers. In contrast, other stakeholders are more interested in reducing the potential for negative ecosystem impacts, including species loss, deforestation, toxic chemicals and airborne particulate matter. In that sense, the idea of the environment (or climate) being global is only way to appreciate, or look at, issues such as these. The truth is, however, that (as indicated earlier in the chapter) such issues are operationally a state level phenomenon that have their roots at the individual and group level.E-International Relations, 5d ago
The ocean is the largest store of carbon in the world. But it is absorbing too much carbon from the atmosphere, making the seas more acidic, with widely documented negative impacts on marine life. Overexploitation is exacerbating these problems, making oceans even more ecologically poor. A study found fishing boats that bottom-trawl the ocean floor release as much carbon dioxide as the aviation industry. The UK has lost 92% of its seagrass in the past two centuries due to a combination of factors, including sewage discharges, nutrients running off farmland and coastal developments. This matters because forests of seagrass are believed to suck up carbon four times faster than forests on land.the Guardian, 5d ago
One challenge for the analysis of the effect of Industry 4.0 on energy indicators is that digitalization-related offshoring and thus reductions in energy intensity may be attributed to digitalization itself. In order to partially capture such effects, Kunkel et al. included the indicator "CO2 imports" as a proxy for the energy intensity of imported goods. There were significant positive associations between CO2 imports and the extent of Industry 4.0, which suggest that an increasing degree of Industry 4.0 is associated with increasing CO2 imports. However, further research is needed to understand the underlying dynamics.techxplore.com, 5d ago
What is worse: we don’t even want to wish for the scenarios that are laid out within the latest IPCC report as the ones that keep temperatures at a safe level. In those scenarios, somewhere between 25 and 80% of current croplands would have to be diverted to grow crops on a planetary scale to be burned for energy, with the carbon dioxide captured and pumped into geological formations. Intervention on such a futuristic scale will lead to massive water shortages that outweigh the climate benefits, increase hunger, accelerate biodiversity loss and fundamentally threaten basic human rights. We are headed for a world of technological half-measures in the name of a climate emergency that will do too little to stop the further rise in greenhouse gas levels, while accelerating ecosystem destruction and inequalities between rich and poor.resilience, 5d ago
