new In both cooking and machine learning, feedback is essential for improving the outcome. Chefs might taste a dish and adjust the seasoning, or ask for feedback from diners to improve their recipes. Similarly, machine learning algorithms rely on feedback to improve their accuracy and performance. In the case of supervised learning, the algorithm is trained on labeled data and receives feedback in the form of correct and incorrect predictions. In unsupervised learning, the algorithm receives feedback from the clustering or dimensionality reduction techniques used to analyze the data.bbntimes.com, 4h ago

The second direction is the learning model and hardware to harness the internal dynamics of memristors to simplify the training process and boost learning abilities. Since biological brains do not precisely calculate loss functions, and gradients for learning and high-precision computing in the analog domain are difficult, the learning of future neuromorphic systems will not only rely on gradient-based algorithms, which have dominated the ANNs and have even been modified for SNNs. Many learning mechanisms in biological brains, such as homosynaptic and heterosynaptic plasticity, local and global inhibitions, spatial and temporal information integration, and hierarchical structures and communications, have not been fully explored to facilitate the learning of neuromorphic hardware. Learning models inspired by the memory and learning systems of biological brains are expected to be designed to integrate rich learning mechanisms into the training of neuromorphic systems based on memristors. Hardware at different levels should also be developed to facilitate these learning models in the hierarchical architecture of future neuromorphic systems.AIP Publishing, 8d ago

new ...-- In quality assurance, it is often necessary to reliably detect deviations from the norm. Industrial cameras have a key role in this, capturing images of products and analyzing them for defects. If the error cases are not known in advance or are too diverse, however, rule-based image processing reaches its limits. By contrast, this challenge can be reliably solved with the AI method Anomaly Detection. The new, free IDS NXT 3.0 software update from IDS Imaging Development Systems makes the method available to all users of the AI vision system with immediate effect. The intelligent IDS NXT cameras are now able to detect anomalies independently and thereby optimize quality assurance processes. For this purpose, users train a neural network that is then executed on the programmable cameras. To achieve this, IDS offers the AI Vision Studio IDS NXT lighthouse, which is characterized by easy-to-use workflows and seamless integration into the IDS NXT ecosystem. Customers can even use only "GOOD" images for training. This means that relatively little training data is required compared to the other AI methods Object Detection and Classification. This simplifies the development of an AI vision application and is well suited for evaluating the potential of AI-based image processing for projects in the company.Another highlight of the release is the code reading function in the block-based editor. This enables IDS NXT cameras to locate, identify and read out different types of code and the required parameters. Attention maps in IDS NXT lighthouse also provide more transparency in the training process. They illustrate which areas in the image have an impact on classification results. In this way, users can identify and eliminate training errors before a neural network is deployed in the cameras.IDS NXT is a comprehensive AI-based vision system consisting of intelligent cameras plus software environment that covers the entire process from the creation to the execution of AI vision applications. The software tools make AI-based vision usable for different target groups – even without prior knowledge of artificial intelligence or application programming. In addition, expert tools enable open-platform programming, making IDS NXT cameras highly customizable and suitable for a wide range of applications.More information:...PRLog, 19h ago

The vulnerability of artificial intelligence (AI) systems to such adversarial interventions raises questions around security and ethics, and many governments are now considering proposals for their regulation. I believe that mathematicians can contribute to this landscape. We can certainly get involved in the conflict escalation issue, where new defence strategies are needed to counter an increasingly sophisticated range of attacks. Perhaps more importantly, we also have the tools to address big picture questions, such as: What is the trade-off between robustness and accuracy? Can any AI system be fooled? Ethics in AI refers to the moral principles and values that govern the development and use of AI. The need for ethics in AI arises because of the potential for AI to cause harm or perpetuate biases. AI is only as ethical as the humans who design and deploy it. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that ethical considerations are embedded in the design and deployment of AI systems. The problem is, there is no real consensus on what is “ethical” in AI, or how to implement a system of ethics. As a general rule, ethicists agree on five basic principles related to ethical use of AI. These are (1) transparency; (2) justice and fairness; (3) non-maleficence; (4) responsibility and (5) privacy. In addition, you have to look at the structural limitations of the AI programs and the data from which they are trained, including inherent and unknown bias, cultural, religious and historical perspective, lack of transparency in gathering or publishing the underlying data from which the AI program “learns,” understanding the impact of AI on institutions (including institutions of power); issues of safety and control and even how to “value” (that is, to score) ethical principles.Security Boulevard, 6d ago

They are capable of information recall, language translation, writing programming code all whilst generating an explanation of the output along the way. This has prompted claims that these models possess human-level intelligence, and even consciousness, or sentience. In this talk, Dr. Matthew Shardlow will describe the inner working of the transformer model that underlies GPT and other similar models driving recent advances in Artificial Intelligence. The talk will then examine chatGPT from the perspective of integrated information theory, concluding with a discussion of the limitations of AI-based language models.bcs.org, 4d ago

..."We report the development of GPT-4, a large-scale, multimodal model which can accept image and text inputs and produce text outputs. While less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, GPT-4 exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks, including passing a simulated bar exam with a score around the top 10% of test takers. GPT-4 is a Transformer-based model pre-trained to predict the next token in a document. The post-training alignment process results in improved performance on measures of factuality and adherence to desired behavior. A core component of this project was developing infrastructure and optimization methods that behave predictably across a wide range of scales. This allowed us to accurately predict some aspects of GPT-4’s performance based on models trained with no more than 1/1,000th the compute of GPT-4."...interestingengineering.com, 4d ago
According to Li, machines follow a control pattern similar to the human nervous system. Humans provide missions and behavioral features to machines, which must then run a complex behavior cycle regulated by a reward and punishment function to improve their abilities of perception, cognition, behavior, interaction, learning and growth. Through iteration and interaction, the short-term memory, working memory and long-term memory of the machines change, embodying intelligence through automatic control. “In essence, control is the use of negative feedback to reduce entropy and ensure the stability of the embodied behavioral intelligence of a machine,” Li concluded.newswise.com, 4d ago

On issues of control and, more generally, on the evolving human-computer relationship, writings, such as those by statistician I. J. Good on the prospects of an “intelligence explosion” followed up by mathematician and science fiction author Vernor Vinge’s writings on the inevitable march towards an AI “singularity,” propose that major changes might flow from the unstoppable rise of powerful computational intelligences. Popular movies have portrayed computer-based intelligence to the public with attention-catching plots centering on the loss of control of intelligent machines. Well-known science fiction stories have included reflections (such as the “Laws of Robotics” described in Asimov’s Robot Series) on the need for and value of establishing behavioral rules for autonomous systems. Discussion, media, and anxieties about AI in the public and scientific realms highlight the value of investing more thought as a scientific community on preceptions, expectations, and concerns about long-term futures for AI.AAAI, 4d ago

Despite our tremendous progress in artificial intelligence (AI), current AI systems still cannot adequately understand humans and flexibly interact with humans in real-world settings. The goal of my research is to build AI systems that can understand and cooperatively interact with humans in the real world. My hypothesis is that to achieve this goal, we need human-level machine social intelligence and that we can take inspiration from the studies of social cognition to engineer such social intelligence. To transfer insights from social cognition to real-world systems, I develop a research program for cognitively inspired machine social intelligence, in which I first i) build computational models to formalize the ideas and theories from social cognition, ii) develop new computational tools and AI methods to implement those models, and finally iii) apply those models to real-world systems such as assistive robots. The Hub, 5d ago
