new Smart contracts, dApps , and the rise of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Polkadot, Cardano, and more have spawned a new breed of use cases and services that run on public and private blockchains. This new era of technology has taken the world by surprise, offering businesses, regulators, and ordinary users a chance to explore uncharted territories. A blockchain is a digital database distributed across a network of special computers called nodes. These nodes have a copy of the database and can seamlessly communicate. Anyone can join the network as a node operator and view the ledger's contents. In essence, a blockchain is a digital ledger that records and stores data, which can be seen and accessed by everyone in the network in real-time. This distributed model assures the trustworthiness of the data because it's impossible for one party to alter the data without the knowledge of other node operators, typically incentivized to keep the veracity of transactions. new It cites a UK government report which believes the opposite is true. Claiming that driverless cars could increase congestion by 85% by 2060. Presently, it’s thought that drivers lose more than 80 hours a year owing to congestion and traffic-related issue. The RAC says this dramatically shoots up to 156 hours for people living in London, according to travel supplier Inrix. The report suggests that a wider adoption of driverless cars would increase traffic because they will increase the mobility of the elderly and of those who don’t have a driving license. As the cars take more control, people will gain the ability to work or relax while travelling in autonomous vehicles, making them, drivers and passengers, more “amenable to sitting in traffic”.tu-auto.com, 1d ago
new CFM engineers were able to slash the LEAP engine’s fuel consumption by 15% compared with the engine’s predecessor, the CFM56, by using breakthrough materials and technologies, including 3D printing. One of the engine’s smaller parts, the metal fuel-nozzle tip the size of a walnut that sprays fuel into the combustor, is so complex that the only way to make it involves 3D-printing it directly from a computer file. So how can a part this small have an effect so significant on fuel consumption? Weight optimization is not only about the weight of the part itself. By designing a component exactly in the shape and size required to fit into the tightest spaces it is possible to reduce the entire weight of the system around a 3D printed part, be it a manifold, a heat exchanger or an incredibly intricate subassembly, such as the fuel nozzle, and many more similar parts to come.VoxelMatters - The heart of additive manufacturing, 1d ago

Wearables supported by VR/AR technology are becoming increasingly common because they allow clients to explore rendered designs before they are built. This technology enables more informed decisions based on visuals that reduce expensive redesigns after construction has begun. Reworking designs after construction has already started can account for up to 2-20 percent of a project’s total contract amount. VR/AR technology also allows management or stakeholders to monitor the work site remotely and reduces the need to travel for on-site visits which is more cost-effective while also reducing their carbon footprint.Civil + Structural Engineer magazine, 19d ago
Under promise and overdeliver. From a holistic standpoint, both private and public entities need to work together to create and adhere to a regulatory framework that works to keep drivers safe. Furthermore, OEMs and auto manufacturers have to place the driver front and centre and craft vehicles that are safe and secure from the conception through the production phase. Autonomous driving is supposed to remove human error from the equation – but if the underlying technology continues to be limited and couple that with prevailing ethical and legal challenges – we still have a ways to go to realizing a new era of mobility.Just Auto, 5d ago

The future of AI is exciting, and technology is expected to play an increasingly important role in our lives. AI is likely to continue to evolve and become more sophisticated, leading to new applications and advancements in fields such as medicine, transportation, and robotics. However, the potential risks associated with AI must also be addressed, such as the displacement of jobs and the need to ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly.blockchain-council.org, 14d ago
When it comes to warehouse operations and the potential of streamlining the process, automation and robotic technology are prime contenders. Automation allows companies to improve efficiency and reduce their labour costs by relying on sophisticated robotics that take on the task of lifting, sorting, palletizing, packaging, and even loading and unloading product from warehouses. These processes can be much faster than a manual effort, saving time and money. In addition to allowing for a quicker and more consistent manufacturing process, automation also enhances safety in warehouses by shifting the tasks of physically moving and carrying heavy products out of human hands. Robotic technology takes this magnitude of repetitive tasks off the shoulders of workers, helping them avoid occupational injuries along with boosting morale. This can lead to a higher overall level of productivity for all employees in the facility.Beyond physical safety, automation also eliminates day-to-day mundane tasks from the productive time of your warehouse staff. Assigning automation to these repetitive jobs creates more opportunities to focus on higher-level objectives such as achieving maximum throughput as well as responding quickly to customer orders or seasonal spikes in demand. On the flipside, there is an initial investment required when introducing automation – both financially and practically – to ensure smooth execution within the warehouse. Additionally, since automation with robots rely heavily on programming or artificial intelligence algorithms that require continual updates or minor tweaks they may not always make decisions exactly how you would like them to if manually fed information. It is therefore important to choose the right system that works best for your organization’s needs when considering investing in automated systems for palletizing.Automation and robotic technology provide organizations with many benefits when streamlining their warehouse operations but careful consideration must be taken into account when making investments into these technologies. In the next section we will look at both advantages and disadvantages of using palletizers within warehouses so that businesses can make informed decisions when attempting to improve their processes through automation.Box Robotics, 20d ago
Since the end of last year, two topics have hogged maximum limelight. One is of course ChatGPT and Generative AI technologies in general; the other is disruption these technologies are going to create in jobs, education, fields of creativity etc. With ChatGPT, we’ve already seen significant improvement in efficiencies and capabilities, making the dividends amply clear. But the thing with technology is, it always has a dual impact- there are winners and there are some losers as well. As a society, what we need to make sure is that we should be able to support and enable these people to adjust and adapt to this new world, while benefiting from the overall value created. We’ll have to be careful to balance the common greater good against individual wins and losses. A good way to think about AI, would be to look at it as augmenting human capability. Because no matter how powerful AI gets, humans plus AI will be even more powerful than either humans alone or AI on its own. It’s quite possible that we’ll see the rise of new jobs where people will work with AI as the partner. Think of someone who wants to make an animated movie and has just the perfect idea. But he can’t sketch, animate or programme. Now, with ChatGPT he can prototype quickly, so there’s no question that lots of jobs will become augmented and therefore there exists a lot of potential for new jobs that didn’t exist before. The future of AI is undoubtedly bright, and it will continue to transform various industries and aspects of our lives. We can expect AI to become more sophisticated and able to perform a wider range of tasks, as it becomes more capable of learning and adapting to new environments. However, AI has its natural limits. For example, while AI can be used to diagnose medical conditions, it cannot replace the empathy and judgment of a human doctor. Similarly, while AI can analyze large data sets and make predictions, it may be limited by biases inherent in the data it’s trained on. Ultimately, the future of AI is likely to involve a balance between automation and human work.insideBIGDATA, 5d ago

new SJ: ” I have not heard this statement before. Each AM process offers its challenges and benefits. In Laser Sintering, you are building a part via a process similar to welding. You have to deal with Splatter effects, tension in the part during the build (which is later removed during an annealing process), structural supports and the build plate that all have to be removed post-build. And your surface finish is less than desirable for most applications. But you can use these processes to fabricate some very intricate parts. With any furnace-demanding process, like binder jet or metal filament-based 3D printing, you can get some very interesting parts printed. However, much like in the MIM industry, the engineer designing the part needs to understand the process the part needs to go through. Meaning that they have to understand the part will experience pretty uniform X+Y shrinkage and a greater Z shrinkage (directionally from the printer). So how the part is printed and how the part is later staged in the furnace for processing needs to be taken into account. MIM had demonstrated the repeatability of the process and has really dominated in its applicable markets for years. The AM industry needs to perform enough experimentation and data analysis to reach this same level on consistency. The processing side is certainly challenging, but only without the right support and team in-house to get the work done. If you don’t have the capital or manpower to get the work done in-house, this is where our sister company, DSH Technology really shines. We help part makers from the ground up. Build the foundation of knowledge needed so that one day they can take over the process, bring it in house and excel in their respective industries they are trying to enter.”...VoxelMatters - The heart of additive manufacturing, 1d ago
new The dental segment is the first and largest adopter of AM technologies for mass production, which makes it one of the key AM verticals 2020 by default. However, until today it has been evolving as a stand-alone industry, using AM for its convenience but without participating directly in the AM industry’s growth. With HP and Smile Direct presenting the first million+ part application for AM in the dental segment and leading to a multi-billion dollar IPO, the relationship between AM and the dental industry could become an even tighter one, making it a key segment for 3dpbm to track in our AM Focus. Along with traditional leaders in this vertical AM segment such as EnvisionTEC, DWS and 3D Systems, EOS and Renishaw, new entries in this segment such as especially Formlabs, Carbon, HP, GE and a large number of smaller photopolymerization hardware manufacturers are playing increasingly relevant roles.VoxelMatters - The heart of additive manufacturing, 1d ago

..., the research team created a so-called quantum score for all SMEs. This also shows that hardware suppliers are currently still closer to quantum computing than potential users.Dr. Zeuch shared, “One should distinguish between companies that are regarded as users and suppliers. Some suppliers are, as I said, already in business. For others, it is possible to get in rather quickly. And, of course, the situation is very different when it comes to the application of quantum computers. Reliable predictions for gaining clear computing advantages are not yet available. This is one reason why potential users are still quite reluctant. Nevertheless, as we have been able to observe in discussions, there is also a great deal of interest here to some extent in getting to grips with the topic. The prospect that quantum computers can deliver exponential computational advantages for certain problems was often perceived as a strong argument. It is no coincidence that technology companies such as Google, IBM or Amazon are pouring vast sums of money into this field.Interested companies are welcome to contact Dr Zeuchat. He currently works at the Institute for Quantum Computer Analysis (PGI-12), where he plays a transfer role between the Forschungszentrum Jülich and industry, associations, government institutions and our guests. Forschungszentrum Jülich also pursues various approaches to strengthen contact with industry, including SMEs, in the field of quantum computing. One example of this is the state-wide network “EIN Quantum NRW”, to which more than a dozen research institutions in NRW joined last year in order to network together with companies from industry. Another example is the planned Center for Quantum Systems and Engineering, or CQSE for short, in which Forschungszentrum Jülich together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen intend to advance quantum technologies in the Rhineland.CoinGenius, 7d ago

new As noted, copyright owners have the right to decide whether to display or perform their works publicly. But if they choose to display their work in public, others can use their works in certain ways without their permission. For example, photographers can take pictures of sculptures or graffiti in public places even when those works are protected by copyright. Copyright prevents photographers from selling those images, but it does not require them to get permission from the copyright owner to take photos. Likewise, individuals do not need to get permission from a copyright owner to study a painting they see in a gallery or a song they hear on the radio. People are free to observe these works and use what they learn from them to create future content without the explicit permission of the copyright owners. There is no intrinsic rationale for why users of generative AI systems would need to obtain permission to train on copyrighted content they have legal access to. Musicians might practice a copyrighted song they heard on Spotify hundreds of times to learn to play an instrument or use their well-honed auditory memory to recall elements of pieces they have heard before. Learning from legally accessed works does not violate a copyright owner’s exclusive reproduction and distribution rights. Unless human creators will be required to obtain permission before they can study another person’s work, this requirement should not be applied to AI.Center for Data Innovation, 1d ago

It’s possible to rephrase this quote in the context of AI, saying that AI is a bicycle for our creativity — our ability to create something new. Creativity is based on life experiences and ideas that creators have. AI cannot replace humans because it uses the work that humans create as an input to produce new designs. But AI can boost creativity greatly because it becomes a sort of ‘second brain’ that works with a creator and provides new inputs.Smashing Magazine, 19d ago

Yet for all of their stated commitment to “building AI systems and products that are trustworthy and safe,” Microsoft and OpenAI either didn’t or couldn’t ensure a Bing chatbot could live up to those principles, but they released it anyway. Google and Meta, by contrast, were very conservative about releasing their products — until Microsoft and OpenAI gave them a push.Warehouse Automation, 14d ago
Bias may arise in AI systems even absent prejudicial or discriminatory intent by their human creators. As urged by emerging US government guidance, companies using such tools should carefully consider the potential for prejudicial or discriminatory impact, be forthright about how they are using chatbots and other generative AI tools, conduct regular testing to judge disparities, and impose a process for humans to review the outputs to ensure compliance with anti-discrimination laws and to safeguard against reputational harm.Tech Policy Press, 21d ago
Support structures are required in many 3D printing processes to achieve printability. They are a scaffolding system that ensures the part can build layer-by-layer without experiencing major defects. They also serve as a medium to adhere the part to the build plate during printing. Design of support structure systems is key to achieving a quality part. Some of the most labor-intensive work around 3D-printed parts involves removing support structure material.protolabs.com, 7d ago
We expect that agile (or bionic) models will remain the most effective and scalable in the long term, but with centralized IT and R&D departments staffed with experts who can train and customize LLMs. This centralization should ensure that employees who work with similar types of data have access to the same data sets. When data is siloed within individual departments—an all-too-common occurrence—companies will struggle to realize generative AI’s true potential. But under the right conditions, generative AI has the power to eliminate the compromise between agility and scale.Warehouse Automation, 9d ago

...that graphs of neural network models like those described above can be applied to political systems. The full-scale use of these technologies to guide lobbying strategy is theoretical, but plausible.Put together, these three components could create an automatic system for generating profitable microlegislation. The policy proposal system would create millions, even billions, of possible amendments. The impact assessor would identify the few that promise to be most profitable to the client. And the lobbying strategy tool would produce a blueprint for getting them passed. What remains is for human lobbyists to walk the floors of the Capitol or state house, and perhaps supply some cash to grease the wheels. These final two aspects of lobbying—access and financing—cannot be supplied by the AI tools we envision. This suggests that lobbying will continue to primarily benefit those who are already influential and wealthy, and AI assistance will amplify their existing advantages. The transformative benefit that AI offers to lobbyists and their clients is scale. Aside from the applications above, what else will secret sharing DAOs bring? Particularly, is there anything to worry about? As it turns out, just like with blockchains themselves, there are a few concerns. The first, and most obvious, issue is that secret sharing DAOs will substantially increase the scope of applications that can be carried out in a completely private fashion. Many advocates of blockchain technology often base a large part of their argument on the key point that while blockchain-based currencies offer an unprecedented amount of anonymity in the sense of not linking addresses to individual identities, they are at the same time the most public form of currency in the world because every transaction is located on a shared ledger. Here, however, the first part remains, but the second part disappears completely. What we have left is essentially total anonymity.cryptolindex.com, 3d ago

Previous studies have demonstrated that this is not always the case. In several situations, AI does not always produce the right response, and these systems must be trained again to correct biases or any other issues. However, another associated phenomenon that poses a danger to the effectiveness of human-AI decision-making teams is AI overreliance, which establishes that people are influenced by AI and often accept incorrect decisions without verifying whether the AI is correct. This can be quite harmful when conducting critical and essential tasks like identifying bank fraud and delivering medical diagnoses. Researchers have also shown that explainable AI, which is when an AI model explains at each step why it took a certain decision instead of just providing predictions, does not reduce this problem of AI overreliance. Some researchers have even claimed that cognitive biases or uncalibrated trust are the root cause of overreliance, attributing overreliance to the inevitable nature of human cognition.MarkTechPost, 4d ago
...“I got into 3D printing about 10 or so years ago – Rob begins – when we made Coraline, which is the first film that came out of LAIKA. There were two gentlemen who came to the studio to help facilitate that project. They had done a little bit of stop motion with Henry Selick on Life Aquatic and had the bold idea of printing a bunch of faces for the characters using a technique called replacement animation. Typically, those things would be hand-sculpted or sculpted and molded and cast. I was brought in to help them build a workflow and toolsets around that process. Ever since then, we’ve continued to progress in using additive tools, mostly focused on PolyJet printing. But we have many different printers in our facility now. We also use a lot of other computer-aided manufacturing tools to make this age-old process of stop motion animation.”...VoxelMatters - From the Heart of Additive Manufacturing, 21d ago
Generative AI can have unintended consequences that are difficult to predict. When things go wrong with generative AI, it can be difficult to determine who is responsible and who should be held accountable. This can make it hard to address ethical problems and prevent them from happening again in the future. Different people and cultures have different values, and it can be challenging to develop AI systems that are aligned with a wide range of ethical perspectives. This can lead to conflicts and trade-offs that are difficult to navigate. The pace of innovation in AI is rapid and it can be hard for ethical considerations to keep up, thus resulting in new ethical challenges arising faster than they can be addressed.Analytics India Magazine, 21d ago

There is actually less disagreement here than first appears. The main points of those who downplay the risks are that (1) we likely have decades left before AI matches or exceeds human abilities, and (2) attempting to immediately regulate research in AI would be a great mistake. Yet neither of these points is actually contested by those who counsel caution: they agree that the time frame to AGI is decades, not years, and typically suggest research on alignment, not regulation. So the substantive disagreement is not really over whether AGI is possible or whether it plausibly could be a threat to humanity. It is over whether a potential existential threat that looks to be decades away should be of concern to us now. It seems to me that it should.lesswrong.com, 7d ago

...: So even banking is done direct through the mobile device. That’s what we’re really looking at. So Phos has replicated EMV level security in the cloud that enables any device that falls within the specifications that the card schemes want to be able to accept contactless payments. And from a consumer perspective, that means there should be an explosion of payment acceptance points, right? So wherever I want to pay, I should be able to tap and go. And the contactless experience, when it’s been introduced all over the world, pretty much can’t think of anywhere where it’s being rejected. It’s been adopted very rapidly. Consumers like it. They like the experience of a very straightforward tap. And I’m done from a sort of acquirer perspective and industry perspective. The level of fraud on these transactions is relatively low compared to e-commerce or something like that. And it means with less risk, there’s less cost in the transaction. So actually it’s one of the cheapest type of transactions that you can do. So there’s really benefits across the board. It’s a win win win scenario. And by removing the requirement to have that payment specific technology, we’re reducing costs for retail, we’re reducing costs for acquirers, we’re reducing the use of plastics in the world. There’s this global silicon shortage. We’re reducing the requirements for those EMV level chips to be in those devices while enabling this huge explosion of acceptance points without the sort of friction associated to those other elements.Soar Payments LLC, 4d ago

The second half of 2022 seems to have been the period of great reckoning in this area. The successive collapse of various blockchain-based projects, from cryptocurrency systems like LUNA, to exchanges like FTX, to the hacking on DAOs, and the quiet disappearance of projects which enjoyed great attention and support, point to a systemic failure of blockchain technology to fulfil its promise. The technology is inadequate or not yet ready for most of its proposed use cases. The safeguards thought to be underwriting the system – the transparency of code, the transparency of the ledger, and the network built on distrust – are often insufficient to ensure the trustworthiness of these systems. It also became obvious that technology is part of a larger ecosystem, in which (design) values, organizational, procedural, and legal elements also play a role in how a blockchain-based system works.IVIR, 4d ago
