new Austin told us that “mixing and matching manufacturing methods is extremely important, I think, to startups in general, but especially to PSYONIC. There’s no way we could have competed with other prosthetics companies at our size if we had to abide by purely traditional manufacturing. Things like CNC machining, and injection molding, the initial costs, especially for trying to prototype things with multiple iterations, would’ve just been far too astronomical for us to do. But with the advent of 3D printing and various kinds of 3D printing, we’ve been able to prototype rapidly, change our iterations and produce things at low scale and low cost. 3D printing, especially the Formlabs 3D printers, has come in absolutely critical for that development process for a startup our size.”...JEC, 10h ago

The sensor’s advanced software capabilities allow it to be a useful tool to ensure patients do not find themselves isolated in emergency situations, such as in the case of a fall, as the sensor can automatically detect an event and alert key personnel.allaboutcircuits.com, 10h ago
new Instead of 2D CLIP embeddings, the relevancy maps resulting from text queries are obtained using 3D CLIP embeddings. This has the advantage that 3D CLIP embeddings are substantially more resistant to obstruction and changes in viewpoint than 2D CLIP embeddings. Moreover, 3D CLIP embeddings are more localized and fit better to the 3D scene structure, giving them a much cleaner appearance. In order to evaluate their approach, the team conducted several experiments on a collection of hand-captured in-the-wild scenarios and found that LERF can localize fine-grained queries relating to highly specific parts of geometry and even abstract queries relating to multiple objects. This innovative method generates 3D view-consistent relevancy maps for a variety of queries and settings. The researchers concluded that the LERF’s zero-shot capabilities had enormous potential in several areas, including robotics, decoding vision-language models, and interacting with 3D environments.MarkTechPost, 21h ago

...)-- Researchers at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz) are developing a virtual breeding garden to test the use of automation and virtual reality (VR) as part of the research project PORTAL (28DK111B20) founded by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The project is intended to optimize and reduce the cost of crop variety plot trials, which are used by seed manufacturers to assess and develop sustainable types that are disease resist and deliver the best yield.Christoph Tieben, Team Leader Robot-Control at DFKI comments, “The use of VR technologies opens several new possibilities, such as the immersive inspection of the plots, regardless of the trial location and cultivation period. Furthermore, the rating of plants in a virtual breeding garden opens the potential for interactive machine learning since the information can be saved and labeled for the creation of data sets. Automation or recommendation systems can be developed on this basis.”DFKI has created a mobile sensing platform that consists of a battery-operated robot based on the Saga Robotics Thorvald Platform, named Valdemar, and a base-station container where Valdemar is protected from storms and vandalism while it uploads data and recharges the battery. Valdemar can travel over 4km in a recording campaign, covering an area of approximately 6,000m2, to capture around 2 Terabytes of data about plants at various stages of development using multiple sensors and cameras. This data is compressed and processed within the base-station container and then uploaded to the cloud-based data center over 5G for further processing to create a three-dimensional map of the breeding garden within a VR environment. In the development phase of Valdemar, the team at DFKI selected IDS-305-XT Industrial Ethernet Switches to connect sensors and cameras for data collection. The compact size of the IDS-305 fit perfectly into the constrained space, while its industrial design enabled reliable operation in this environment that is subjected to vibration, shock, and -40°C to 75°C temperatures. The IDS-305-XT plays a critical role in the backbone network by enabling real-time clock synchronization of individual control components and ProfiNet support for the integration of a fail-safe PLC.The second issue was the data upload to the base-station container followed by transmission to the cloud-based data center.Tieben explains, “Because Valdemar is battery operated, and the base-station container is solar and wind-powered, the equipment installed needed to consume as little power as possible. For this job, we tested cellular routers from Perle, Cradlepoint, and Sierra Wireless. Perle’s power consumption was half of the competitive products. That, along with the fact that Perle did not have the SIM card recognition issues that we experience with the others, made our decision to choose the IRG Routers easy.”Perle IRG Routers are designed to operate on limited power sources by consuming less than 1 Watt in idle mode and 52mW in standby mode. This makes them ideal for battery, solar, and wind-powered applications. They also meet all the environmental requirements with a small form factor, rugged die-cast aluminum IP54 enclosure, shock, and vibration resistance certified to MIL-STD-810G, and -40°C to 70°C operating temperatures. An IRG5541+ LTE Router is installed on Valdemar and an IRG7440 5G Router is located inside the base-station to maintain a continuous VPN LTE connection between the robot and the container. When Valdemar returns to base-station container, the data is automatically transferred using a local WLAN 6E network. The base-station processing equipment compresses and reduces the data before it is uploaded to the cloud-based data center overnight using the Perle IRG7440 5G Router.About Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz: https://www.dfki.de/Description automatically generated The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) has operated as a non-profit, Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) since 1988. When it comes to warehouse operations and the potential of streamlining the process, automation and robotic technology are prime contenders. Automation allows companies to improve efficiency and reduce their labour costs by relying on sophisticated robotics that take on the task of lifting, sorting, palletizing, packaging, and even loading and unloading product from warehouses. These processes can be much faster than a manual effort, saving time and money. In addition to allowing for a quicker and more consistent manufacturing process, automation also enhances safety in warehouses by shifting the tasks of physically moving and carrying heavy products out of human hands. Robotic technology takes this magnitude of repetitive tasks off the shoulders of workers, helping them avoid occupational injuries along with boosting morale. This can lead to a higher overall level of productivity for all employees in the facility.Beyond physical safety, automation also eliminates day-to-day mundane tasks from the productive time of your warehouse staff. Assigning automation to these repetitive jobs creates more opportunities to focus on higher-level objectives such as achieving maximum throughput as well as responding quickly to customer orders or seasonal spikes in demand. On the flipside, there is an initial investment required when introducing automation – both financially and practically – to ensure smooth execution within the warehouse. Additionally, since automation with robots rely heavily on programming or artificial intelligence algorithms that require continual updates or minor tweaks they may not always make decisions exactly how you would like them to if manually fed information. It is therefore important to choose the right system that works best for your organization’s needs when considering investing in automated systems for palletizing.Automation and robotic technology provide organizations with many benefits when streamlining their warehouse operations but careful consideration must be taken into account when making investments into these technologies. In the next section we will look at both advantages and disadvantages of using palletizers within warehouses so that businesses can make informed decisions when attempting to improve their processes through automation.Box Robotics, 20d ago

Since the end of last year, two topics have hogged maximum limelight. One is of course ChatGPT and Generative AI technologies in general; the other is disruption these technologies are going to create in jobs, education, fields of creativity etc. With ChatGPT, we’ve already seen significant improvement in efficiencies and capabilities, making the dividends amply clear. But the thing with technology is, it always has a dual impact- there are winners and there are some losers as well. As a society, what we need to make sure is that we should be able to support and enable these people to adjust and adapt to this new world, while benefiting from the overall value created. We’ll have to be careful to balance the common greater good against individual wins and losses. A good way to think about AI, would be to look at it as augmenting human capability. Because no matter how powerful AI gets, humans plus AI will be even more powerful than either humans alone or AI on its own. It’s quite possible that we’ll see the rise of new jobs where people will work with AI as the partner. Think of someone who wants to make an animated movie and has just the perfect idea. But he can’t sketch, animate or programme. Now, with ChatGPT he can prototype quickly, so there’s no question that lots of jobs will become augmented and therefore there exists a lot of potential for new jobs that didn’t exist before. The future of AI is undoubtedly bright, and it will continue to transform various industries and aspects of our lives. We can expect AI to become more sophisticated and able to perform a wider range of tasks, as it becomes more capable of learning and adapting to new environments. However, AI has its natural limits. For example, while AI can be used to diagnose medical conditions, it cannot replace the empathy and judgment of a human doctor. Similarly, while AI can analyze large data sets and make predictions, it may be limited by biases inherent in the data it’s trained on. Ultimately, the future of AI is likely to involve a balance between automation and human work.insideBIGDATA, 5d ago
...“Using robotization we can push the limits of what can be manufactured using 3D technology, both in terms of size and shape”, commented Emil Johansson, co-founder at ADAXIS. “The challenge is that programming robots for 3D is significantly more advanced and complex than for normal welding jobs. Our goal is to speed up the manufacturing process and make it more intuitive, even when it comes to really complex projects so that everyone can benefit from this technology.VoxelMatters - From the Heart of Additive Manufacturing, 22d ago

new ...-- In quality assurance, it is often necessary to reliably detect deviations from the norm. Industrial cameras have a key role in this, capturing images of products and analyzing them for defects. If the error cases are not known in advance or are too diverse, however, rule-based image processing reaches its limits. By contrast, this challenge can be reliably solved with the AI method Anomaly Detection. The new, free IDS NXT 3.0 software update from IDS Imaging Development Systems makes the method available to all users of the AI vision system with immediate effect. The intelligent IDS NXT cameras are now able to detect anomalies independently and thereby optimize quality assurance processes. For this purpose, users train a neural network that is then executed on the programmable cameras. To achieve this, IDS offers the AI Vision Studio IDS NXT lighthouse, which is characterized by easy-to-use workflows and seamless integration into the IDS NXT ecosystem. Customers can even use only "GOOD" images for training. This means that relatively little training data is required compared to the other AI methods Object Detection and Classification. This simplifies the development of an AI vision application and is well suited for evaluating the potential of AI-based image processing for projects in the company.Another highlight of the release is the code reading function in the block-based editor. This enables IDS NXT cameras to locate, identify and read out different types of code and the required parameters. Attention maps in IDS NXT lighthouse also provide more transparency in the training process. They illustrate which areas in the image have an impact on classification results. In this way, users can identify and eliminate training errors before a neural network is deployed in the cameras.IDS NXT is a comprehensive AI-based vision system consisting of intelligent cameras plus software environment that covers the entire process from the creation to the execution of AI vision applications. The software tools make AI-based vision usable for different target groups – even without prior knowledge of artificial intelligence or application programming. In addition, expert tools enable open-platform programming, making IDS NXT cameras highly customizable and suitable for a wide range of applications.More information:...PRLog, 1d ago
new The past few years have been marked by a literal exponential increase in the number of publications with the words “machine learning,” “artificial intelligence,” and “deep learning” in their titles. These tools now pervade materials science workflows and have been integrated with experimental/computational automation to form autonomous research agents, capable of planning, executing, and analyzing entire scientific campaigns. Lurking beneath the surface truly amazing accomplishments are serious questions around trust, bias, reproducibility, and equity which will ultimately determine the overall adoption of AI and autonomy by the broader community. Here, I will speak to recent work done by our group to systematically (1) remove human bias from experimental data analysis, (2) identify and actively remediate bias in large datasets , and (3) foster and promote a community of equity and reproducibility within the materials AI sub-domain. Specific case studies will center around standard electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis, building stability model predictions for complex alloys from large theoretical datasets, and maximizing the amount of information extracted from imaging techniques.Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, 1d ago
new This seems clearly false in the case of deep learning, where progress on instilling any particular behavioral tendencies in models roughly follows the amount of available data that demonstrate said behavioral tendency. It's thus vastly easier to align models to goals where we have many examples of people executing said goals. As it so happens, we have roughly zero examples of people performing the "duplicate this strawberry" task, but many more examples of e.g., humans acting in accordance with human values, ML / alignment research papers, chatbots acting as helpful, honest and harmless assistants, people providing oversight to AI models, etc. See also:...alignmentforum.org, 1d ago

new Another technological innovation which I saw for the first time at Pergamon was the ‘word processor’. As everyone knows, for the last forty years this has been a software program that runs on general purpose computers, but back then a word processor was actually a specialist machine, best thought of as a sort of hybrid between typewriter, printer and computer, albeit with limited functionality. Robert Maxwell acquired several of these at great expense not long after I started at Pergamon, and was incredibly proud of them. On one occasion, never forgotten by all those who witnessed it, he was gleefully showing them to East Europe officials who had come to visit the office. Eager to demonstrate that these enormous contraptions could be folded up and easily stored, he attempted to do exactly this by folding up the entire table that one of the machines was bolted onto. A man of considerable size and strength, he actually succeeded in this: lifting and folding, and naturally breaking, the table and machine.Publishing Perspectives, 1d ago
new The market for industrial dust collectors has expanded because of increasing rates of industrialization and urbanization around the world. Furthermore, in November 2022, according to the World Bank, India will need to invest around $840 billion in urban infrastructure over the next 15 years in order to adequately meet the needs of its rapidly growing urban population, which is expected to reach $600 million by 2036, or 40% of the country's population. In addition, according to this World Bank projection, 40% of India's population, or 600 million people, would live in urban areas by 2036. As a result, the government will have to make significant expenditures on building the different amenities required to support urban inhabitants’ livelihoods. As a result, demand for industrial dust collectors increases as more commercial and residential construction increases. For instance, Vietnam is constructing approximately 400 industrial parks around the country. The demand for dust collectors in these facilities is anticipated to rise significantly because these parks will service a variety of businesses, from the production of building materials to the processing of food. Moreover, the need for industrial dust collectors has grown as a result of strict environmental and governmental requirements. For instance, in June 2022, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under the Clean Air Act (CAA), the EPA sets restrictions on specific air contaminants, including the maximum amounts that can be present in the air at any place in the U.S. The Clean Air Act also gives the EPA the power to control air pollution emissions from several sectors of the U.S. economy, including steel mills, utilities, and chemical plants. Owners of manufacturing facilities must adhere to rules because of these kinds of international government prohibitions. As a result, they set up commercial dust collectors at their factories and other construction sites. However, high capital and operational costs of industrial dust collectors are anticipated to restrain the industrial dust collector market growth. Moreover, constant innovations in dust collector products from different key players is an industrial dust collector market opportunity for the growth of the key players. For instance, in June 2021, Atlas Copco AB, a leading manufacturer of industrial tools and equipment launched a new product called the DCP 30 pneumatic dust collector, which is the first pneumatic dust control system available on the market that can be used to collect dust at the source while drilling with three handheld rock drills simultaneously and reducing the exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust, improving the operators' health and assuring a safe working environment.Allied Market Research, 1d ago

new Subsequently, bloggers/influencers and marketers around the world began conversations about similar platforms or alternatives like ChatSonic, Writier, and Rytr that can make content creation so much easier by replacing humans. And this happened while many were still recovering from the absolute delight of what platforms like Grammarly were offering. In recent years, AI breakthroughs have become a regular phenomenon. The demand for content has never been higher, and Generative AI technology has been successfully meeting this requirement. It is, therefore, obvious that content generation tools that create high-quality, making it easier to meet that demand and reduce dependency on humans, are here to stay. All of this brings us to the one big question – If everyone attains the super-power of creating high-quality content quickly and efficiently using intelligent bots, how do brands establish originality and stand out?...DATAQUEST, 1d ago
new Yes Ghansham. I think in the last couple of years, as you’ve identified, there’s just a lot of noise. There was excess usage during COVID. Then frankly, I think excess underutilization. So we invested in machines. We invested in machines, placing them at new customers, frankly kept a number of fleet at existing customers. We are very focused on making sure that we’re optimizing the amount of equipment at existing customers right now, but we want to be careful where, you don’t want to go reduce that number of machines drastically. If you think some of the issues the customers are facing are due to temporary weakness or temporary softness, you want to make sure that you, you’re providing the right service level to these customers.Insider Monkey, 2d ago

By combining various inertial sensors, such as an accelerometer, gyroscope, and sometimes a magnetometer, an IMU can read six dimensions (yaw, roll, and pitch rate, as well as lateral, longitudinal, and vertical accelerations) around the three axes while driving. IMUs are employed in a variety of automotive applications, including the most recent advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) functions for autonomous driving. It aids in filling in the GPS gap when the car approaches the blind spot and when LiDAR performance fails in a snowstorm. With the support of micro-fabrication and micro-machining processes, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology enabled the shrinking of mechanical and electro-mechanical elements in the field of sensors and semiconductors. As a result, MEMS has become a crucial component of various automation components in Level 1, 2, and 3 autonomous vehicles, considerably increasing the demand for inertial systems in the automotive industry. The market growth is being driven by the increased need for safety in automobiles. Every year, nearly 1.35 million people are killed in traffic accidents across the globe, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, between 20 and 50 million additional people are injured non-fatally, with many of them becoming disabled as a result of their injury. MEMS accelerometers serve a critical role in increasing car safety features.New players are boosting their market presence and expanding their business footprint throughout emerging nations, owing to advancements in sensor technology across inertial systems. In October 2019, Honeywell launched the HGuide i300, which is a high-performance MEMS-based inertial measurement unit (IMU) designed to meet the needs of applications in a variety of markets, including agriculture, AUVs, industrial equipment, robotics, survey/mapping, stabilized platforms, transportation, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). The HGuide i300 can be readily integrated into a variety of topologies owing to industry-standard communication interfaces and a wide input voltage range. The HGuide i300's tiny size, lightweight, and low power make it suitable for a wide range of applications. To Request a Sample of our Report on Vehicle Inertial Sensor Market:...openPR.com, 21d ago
Newswise — Researchers at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) have created software and hardware for a 4D printer with applications in the biomedical field. In addition to 3D printing, this machine allows for controlling extra functions: programming the material’s response so that shape-changing occurs under external magnetic field, or changes in its electric properties develops under mechanical deformation. This opens the door to the design of soft robots or smart sensors and substrates that transmit signals to different cellular systems, among other applications. This research line focuses on the development of soft multifunctional structures, which consist of materials with mechanical properties that mimic biological tissues such as the brain or skin. In addition, they are capable of changing their shape or properties when actuated via external stimuli, such as magnetic fields or electric currents.Until now, this team of researchers had made several advances in the design and manufacturing of these structures, but they were very limited in terms of shape-design and programming of intelligent responses. The work presented in their latest study, published in the journal Advanced Materials Technologies, has allowed them to open up new possibilities by developing a novel4D printing methodology. “This technology allows us to not only control the way we print three-dimensional structures, but also to give them the ability to change their properties or geometry in response to the action of external magnetic fields, or the ability to modify their electric properties when they deform”, explains one of the researchers, Daniel García González, head of the ERC 4D-BIOMAP (GA 947723) project and associate professor in UC3M’s Department of Continuum Mechanics and Structure Theory. This type of printing is complex since the material to be extruded transitions from liquid to solid during the printing process. It is therefore necessary to understand the material dynamics to adapt the manufacturing process and obtain a material which is sufficiently liquid when it flows through the printer nozzle but, at the same time, solid enough to maintain a specific shape. To this end, they have developed an interdisciplinary methodology that combines theoretical and experimental techniques allowing them to build the printing device from scratch, both the physical part of the device (the hardware) and the computer programmes that allow it to be controlled (the software).newswise.com, 14d ago
Ask any technologist when a true quantum computer will be ready for prime time and you’ll get an answer ranging anywhere from five to 10 years, even longer. But the future of quantum computing may very likely be found in hybrid systems—systems available today—that allow developers and engineers to integrate classical silicon and quantum workflows. For example, D-Wave Systems, a Canadian company, has steadily improved its quantum-classical architecture, known as quantum annealing, over the last decade to address real optimization and modeling problems for clients around the world.D-Wave’s hybrid offering is being used by Mastercard to optimize their customers’ loyalty programs, by global professional services company Deloitte to reduce the time to produce schedules for airport security personnel from a month to minutes, at the Port of Los Angeles to improve crane operations and truck turn times, in Japan to optimize the delivery of TV advertising, and by Pattison Food Group to optimize the schedules for their ecommerce drivers.“What we’ve found is that classical computing and quantum computing have complementary strengths when it comes to producing solutions for business applications,” D-Wave Systems Vice President of Product Management Murray Thom said in an interview.“You can always put them together in a way where they can do a better job of solving larger problems,” he maintained.Microsoft, too, is in the hybrid game. It’s integrating quantum services into its Azure cloud and providing users with software that will enable them to write code that will run on those services.“We’re architecting our machine so that the best performance can be obtained across both the classical and quantum parts,” Krysta Svore, an engineer and vice president of Advanced Quantum Development at Microsoft, said in an interview.“It also requires architecting a hybrid system—not only are the algorithms a mixture of quantum and classical code, but keeping the machine fault tolerant also requires advanced classical computing,” she explained. “This means that we need to have a supercomputer at the helm, with the quantum computer as the engine.”Meanwhile, IBM is working on a path to quantum-centric supercomputing, which includes interaction with classical computers through a hybrid cloud.Intel is contributing to the hybrid scene, too. Its Horse Ridge chip allows the interface to be simplified between the control and measurement layer and the control processor layer of the hybrid system. Horse Ridge acts as a cryogenic control chip, allowing the classical electronics in the control processor layer to function in the extremely low temperatures needed for the control and measurement layer to function.“Quantum-classical hybrid systems are here to stay,” Daniel Justice, a software developer in the AI division of the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, said in an interview.“A purely quantum system is not desirable because quantum computers are not better than classical computers for every task,” he continued. “It is much more efficient to use classical computers for simple tasks and quantum computers only when necessary.”He noted that another advantage of hybrid systems is that they can be more fault tolerant. “The classical computer can be used to detect and correct errors that may occur in the quantum computer,” he explained. “This can help to increase the reliability and robustness of the system.”“Overall, hybrid computing is a practical and necessary approach to quantum computing, and it will continue to be used as we move towards large-scale, fully capable quantum computers,” he added.Svore agreed that the future of quantum computing is hybrid computing. “While an incredible technology, quantum computers rely on classical supercomputers to interpret and relay quantum data into a readable format,” she said.“A standalone quantum system cannot operate without classical compute preparing what has to be computed, analyzing the results and deciding what further computation needs to be performed,” she continued.“Quantum computing is hybrid by nature,” she added. “It is today with the current generation of quantum computers made of noisy qubits, and it will be in the future with fault-tolerant quantum computers made of millions of reliable and fast qubits.”While some analysts persist in using the term hybrid to suggest that the classical-quantum interface will be only a temporary phase or “bridge” to full-scale quantum computing, companies are increasingly realizing that hybrid systems will be an integral part of the quantum future, as well as the present, Arthur Herman, senior fellow and director of the Quantum Alliance Initiative,...CoinGenius, 20d ago
Making a movie requires hacks upon hacks, and that goes double in the era when the technology and techniques we now take for granted were being developed even as they were being put to film. The range of topics covered here is extreme: from full-scale props to models; from robotic motion control rigs to stop motion animation; from early computer graphics to the convoluted optical compositing that was necessary before digital workflows were possible. The tools themselves may be outdated, but understanding the history and the processes allows for a deeper insight into how we accomplish these kinds of effects today. And, really, it’s just so… cool.Hackaday, 10d ago
...in June 2022 that embedded RRAM market will grow from $18m in 2021 to $957m in 2027 at a 94% CAGR. Intrinsic sees many opportunities to integrate its technology with applications and devices that operate autonomously or remotely, ranging from driverless vehicles, robots in manufacturing, farming and warehouses to consumer applications around the home. As its technology offers higher performance at lower cost and energy consumption, it will make it practical to store and process data locally, with the added benefit of enhancing privacy. Data will no longer need to be stored or processed in the cloud, which is also good for those applications operating remotely where connectivity blind spots may be an issue.Semiconductor Digest, 8d ago
...– [Philippe] Well, so, if you think about it, right? So, if you think about it, there are many technology at play in the age of autonomy, right? So, IoT is gonna collect data in real-time, and then, also, send insight about what to do to those objects, or to the space. Age two cloud is gonna enable the cost effective and sustainable and loop-latency processing. You’re gonna have digital twins, A.I. simulations, blockchain, all those technologies are gonna be at play. And so, if you think about specifically IoT, right? IoT is playing a major, it’s a major layer of that new infrastructure. And, on a macro basis, more device are becoming connected and those device are becoming smarter. They are also becoming cheaper and more sustainable with technologies, emerging technologies, like Ambient IoT. I don’t know if you’ve covered that in your podcast. But, I think it’s an interesting trend to look at, and that is emerging now. then, you know if you’re thinking about where we are, right? So, as we discussed, right? We need to connect, we need to create intelligence space, we need to connect the device and make them smarter. We need to connect with the cloud, and then we need to, with the platforms into those in intelligence spaces. And, if you think about it, right, the use case have emerged now to create intelligent and connected space, such as factories, stores, hospitals, and you know, this vision is not far away, right? Like, for instance, Kroger, today, partners with Nvidia to optimize the efficiency of the store through the use of digital twins that are updated in real time with customer data moving in the store. Amazon in same thing, is now, you know automating their entire warehouse, and creating a same-day delivery approach while keep, while being at zero carbon emissions. So, all of us are com- are intelligent spaces, intelligent stores, so those are happening, right? So, so we need sensors, we need IoT, and IoT is being implemented there. Where there is less of, of a growth at this point, and we are not seeing the use case yet, but they are gonna come for sure as virtualization technology on device are taking hold, and TinyML is also taking hold, is on the intelligent objects, right? So, so it’s happening, but it’s not happening as fast as the intelligent spaces.IoT For All, 7d ago

new ...) and other menstruation-tracking information to predict ovulation and give you a nudge when would be the best time to do the business if you are trying to conceive. Admittedly, this is something I cannot test, and a quick heads up, it takes a month of data tracking for this feature to properly work. But from speaking to my friends and colleagues who are either trying to conceive or have the Apple Watch Series 8 themselves, this has been a game changer. For anyone worried about security, all of this data is end-to-end encrypted. And finally, a feature you hopefully never have to use, which is Crash Detection. Using a combination of the 3-axis gyroscope, g-force accelerometer, microphone, barometer, GPS, and a sensor-fusion algorithm trained with over a million hours of crash data, your Apple Watch can detect if you’ve been in an accident and call emergency-service providers.Of course, I’m not willing to test this, and there have been some teething issues early on, such as the watch calling emergency services after someone’s been on a roller coaster. But it’s one of those nice-to-have features that could save a life at some point.Of course, speaking of its fitness and health credentials, the on-board technology and build quality match what is needed to make these work: WR50 water resistance, IP6X dust resistance, accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, optical heart rate sensor, barometer, temperature sensors and an always-on altimeter. But of course, the features here are not about the hardware — it’s what the software achieves. Thanks to the tight integration with the app store on your phone, this thing does a lot of stuff!Beyond the core features that watchOS 9 implements, such as reminders to take your medication, the updated calendar app and the slew of features you’ve become accustomed to, such as notifications, making calls and listening to music/podcasts from your watch, the combination of first-party and third-party app integrations really flesh out the experience. For example, when I go into London for one of my many work meetings, I use Apple Pay to get onto the underground, have the latest episode of Not Another D&D Podcast downloaded to my watch to listen as I commute, open up Google Maps to find my way to the meeting point, and in the moments that I forgot to turn off a plug at home, just open up my Apple Home app to switch it off immediately. It’s a really slick experience, which is exactly what you’d expect from a watch UI that Applehad the benefit of eight years to work on and improve.Let’s talk about what has always been a bit of a weakness of the Apple Watch. In the Series 8, Apple promises up to 18 hours from the 308 mAh cell inside here. This is largely accurate, but the issue is there are plenty of variables that may cause it to dwindle faster. This is far behind the up to 14 days of the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro, but very much in line with what you’d expect from an Apple Watch, which is barely enough for a day and a half with some attention paid to it. I remember the many times at music festivals where you are away from a charger for an entire weekend and fear this wouldn’t survive past the first day of bands!Luckily, there is now a low-power mode, which does a few things such as reduce the screen brightness slightly and reduce the amount of times the various sensors on the watch take readings to increase the battery life. Apple claims 36 hours, and I safely hit that at a total of 36 hours and 42 minutes.I’ll end as I began, the Apple Watch Series 8 is a great smartwatch. Sure, the upgrades are incredibly mild, and while the battery life has been improved slightly, it’s still not as long as I’d like. But after years of iterative updates, this formula is one of the strongest in the wearables market. So, rather than break it down, let’s ask the key question: do you need one? Because while this is objectively a great piece of kit, whether this is a must-buy is rather difficult to answer — especially with the increasingly impressive Apple Watch SE 2 and the Apple Watch Ultra in the mix. Let me break it down:I would look at the new SE. Think carefully about whether you actually need an always-on display, if you benefit from the ECG and blood oxygen readings, if temperature sensing and more accurate cycle tracking is important to you, and whether you’re going to miss that additional millimeter of screen real estate and the edge-to-edge display. If these are important to you, then you will love the Series 8. The fast-charging boosts this up to full in a jiffy and the third-generation optical heart sensor does pick up your pulse quicker. Plus, you get a greater variety of material finishes. If you need something super rugged for your insane workout routine, or you’re a professional athlete, then you fall into the niche where I would recommend the Apple Watch Ultra. That Titanium finish, extended battery life, dual GPS and military-standard testing for durability means it will more than capably handle your demanding needs.Put simply: the Apple Watch Series 8 is damn good. But with tiny updates and the impressive upgrades made to the second generation SE, make sure you figure out what you actually need before clicking buy. You may be just as happy and save yourself some serious money in the process.Jason brings a decade of tech and gaming journalism experience to his role as a writer at Laptop Mag. new ..., the bot itself was created with the help of human trainers who ranked and rated the way early versions of the chatbot responded to queries. This information was then fed back into the system, which tuned its answers to match trainers’ preferences (a standard method of AI training known as reinforcement learning). The bot’s web interface notes that OpenAI’s goal in putting the system online is to “get external feedback in order to improve our systems and make them safer.” The company also says that while ChatGPT has certain guardrails in place, “the system may occasionally generate incorrect or misleading information and produce offensive or biased content.” (And indeed it does!) Other caveats include the fact that the bot has “limited knowledge” of the world after 2021 (presumably because its training data is much more sparse after that year) and that it will try to avoid answering questions about specific people. Enough preamble, though: what can this thing actually do? Well, plenty of people have been testing it out with coding questions and claiming its answers are perfect:ChatGPT can also apparently write some pretty uneven TV scripts, even combining actors from different sitcoms. (Finally: that “I forced a bot to watch 1,000 hours of show X”...Inferse.com, 2d ago

new The project aims to verify the fuel-saving effect of autonomous navigation systems on actual ships, making it a significant collaboration between domestic shipbuilders, autonomous navigation companies, shipping companies, and classification societies. Although the concept of the optimal route already exists, there have been difficulties in realizing it due to the need for manual adjustments to speed and route depending on weather conditions. Therefore, energy-saving verification has been conducted only through simulations led by shipbuilders or equipment manufacturers. This project, however, will verify the automatic execution of optimal route and speed plans based on autonomous navigation systems and actual ship operating data, making the results more reliable. This verification is expected to be a significant development in the field of eco-friendly and autonomous navigation.hellenicshippingnews.com, 2d ago
new However, I believe that decentralization of the means of production can make lack of coherent security irrelevant for folks willing to create the means of providing their own security. Along with a network of decentralized makers ability to provide mutually redundant security from gangs of armed thugs are the potential to produce many, if not all, of the blessings of civilization, from food, shelter, and power production, to electronics, communications, and medical services. As decentralized production technologies like aquaponics, 3D printing, solar (and other) power, inkjet printing (which is able to print electronics on PET, including solar, LEDs, and logic circuitry, drugs by assembling molecular subunits, and even living cells), AI (not AGI, or anything more than is available presently, which purged of it's crippling politicization, would be very useful in automating household production, financial assets, even medical diagnostics, and much more) continue to develop, the ability of communities to themselves produce all the blessings of civilization is becoming inescapable.LeoFinance, 2d ago

We’ve seen that these capabilities are sought after by many leading healthcare companies and that there is no shortage of opportunities for expanding the business and delivering significant long-term growth. Going into 2023, it is clear that to effectively execute against our potential, it is necessary to apply focus to the most important of the current opportunities and those with the greatest long-term potential. What this means in our DME Services unit is easy. Focus on executing and ramping the relationship under the GE agreement. new Well, for sure, AI has been a mainstay alongside of automation in every part of our platform, and it’s an area that we continue to invest in. I think one of the places where we were early was in building a foundational data model to support our customers in moving from simply responding faster to issues as they arise, to actually proactively preventing those issues from becoming major customer impacts. And that has been through leveraging AI in incident response, in AIOps, in parts of our automation product, and increasingly in customer service. Generative AI, right now we see it used for a lot of content creation. It’s dependent on a large model, the Internet being one of those. But one of the challenges for Generative AI in our space is our customers expect a very high level of fidelity in the signals that they get false positives or false negatives are not good things when you’re dealing with business critical or mission critical infrastructure.Insider Monkey, 2d ago
new This strange story is popularly discussed as a historical fluke of sorts, a wacky one-off in military research and development. As Skinner himself described it, one of the main obstacles to Project Pigeon even at the time was the perception of a pigeon guided missile as a “crackpot idea.” But in this section I will argue that it is, in fact, a telling example of the weaponization of animals in a modern technological setting where optical media was increasingly deployed on the battlefield, a transformation with increasing strategic and ethical implications for the way war is fought today. I demonstrate that Project Pigeon was historically placed at the intersection of a crucial shift in warfare away from the model of an elaborate chess game played out by generals and their armies and toward an ecological framework in which a wide array of nonhuman agents play crucial roles. As Jussi Parikka recently described a similar shift in artificial intelligence, this was a movement toward “agents that expressed complex behavior, not through preprogramming and centralization, but through autonomy, emergence, and distributed functioning.” The missile developed and marketed by Project Pigeon was premised on a conversion of the pigeon from an individual consciousness to a living machine, emptied of intentionality in order to leave behind only a controllable, yet dynamic and complex, behavior that could be designed and trusted to operate without the oversight of a human commander. Here is a reimagining of what a combatant can be, no longer dependent on a decision-making human actor but rather on a complex array of interactions among an organism, device, and environment. As we will see, the vision of a pigeon-guided bomb presaged the nonhuman sight of the smart bomb, drone, and military robot, where artificial intelligence and computer algorithms replace the operations of its animal counterpart.Engadget, 2d ago

new Graph transformers have shown promise in various graph learning and representation tasks. However, scaling them to larger graphs while maintaining competitive accuracy with message-passing networks remains challenging. To address this issue, a new framework called EXPHORMER has been introduced by a group of researchers from the University of British Columbia, Google Research and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. This framework utilizes a sparse attention mechanism based on virtual global nodes and expander graphs, which possess desirable mathematical characteristics such as spectral expansion, sparsity, and pseudorandomness. As a result, EXPHORMER enables the building of powerful and scalable graph transformers with complexity linear to the size of the graph while also providing theoretical properties of the resulting models. Incorporating EXPHORMER into GraphGPS yields models with competitive empirical results on various graph datasets, including three state-of-the-art datasets. Moreover, EXPHORMER can handle larger graphs than previous graph transformer architectures.MarkTechPost, 2d ago
...to extend its automated recommendation capabilities to reduce mean-time-to-remediation.ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is based on a large language model that Logz.io uses to enrich crowdsourced data. That approach enables ChatGPT to surface links to related information and best practices for resolving IT issues.Logz.io CTO Asaf Yigal said the company has integrated ChatGPT with its existing AI engine, dubbed Cognitive Insights, that applies machine learning algorithms to identify anomalies indicative of potentially critical IT issues. The company expects to be able to add other generative AI capabilities as additional advances are made, he added. The Logz.io Open 360 platform is based on open source OpenSearch, Prometheus and Jaeger software that the company has infused with machine learning algorithms. The integration with ChatGPT is enabled via an application programming interface (API) that OpenAI has provided. The overall goal is to employ AI to surface the most relevant issues a DevOps team needs to focus on without having to search huge volume of logs, tracing and metrics data, said Yigal. Generative AI platforms solve a fundamental cognitive load problem created today as DevOps teams collect more data, noted Yial. The more data a DevOps team collects, the harder it becomes to determine what’s going on in an IT environment, said Yigal. He added that generative AI platforms make it possible to analyze massive amounts of data at a scale that isn’t otherwise achievable.AI tools should make it possible to manage IT at a level of scale that eliminates many of the low-level data engineering and analytics tasks that previously required manual effort from a DevOps engineering team. It’s not clear how many other DevOps tools and platforms will be invoking generative AI capabilities in the months ahead, but DevOps teams should assume that large language models will soon be augmenting DevOps teams in ways that previously would have been thought unlikely. For example, discovering vulnerabilities in software running in production environments is about to become trivial as artificial intelligence (AI) platforms such as ChatGPT evolve. A generative AI platform can identify code vulnerabilities in much the same way as a traditional scanning tool. An AI platform, however, could theoretically monitor code repositories and scan them for vulnerabilities as updates and commits are being made in real-time. DevOps teams should be able to use generative AI platforms to discover and remediate these issues before code is deployed in a production environment. It’s just as probable bad actors will use the same platform to achieve the same goal, so from that perspective, many DevOps teams will now find themselves in an AI arms race to improve...Inferse.com, 3d ago

It is widely anticipated that inference models based on Deep Neural Networks (DNN) will be actively deployed in many edge platforms. This has promoted research in automated learning of tiny neural architectures through search. Although NAS was proposed in 2016, the NAS research is focused on fast search of DNN architectures that surpass the performance of human-designed ones. Apart from the above primary target of enhancing the NAS process itself, many people use NAS for generating and customizing DNN models, given a target hardware. In recent times this has become very important for embedded Deep Neural Networks that need to meet platform specific constraints and various objectives, such as low latency, low memory footprint and low power consumption. Neural Architecture Search (NAS) can provide both efficient and accurate, customized models for the target architecture. However, the existing frameworks either provide a). mechanisms for fast accurate model generation or b) slow but both accurate and efficient model generation, but not both. Towards This, the current tutorial explains the basic NAS process and the mathematical model behind the search, which makes it easy for the TinyML engineers to tweak existing NAS frameworks in an informed manner.tinyml.org, 3d ago

Energy harvesting (EH) is also known as power harvesting or energy scavenging. It is the process by which ambient energy is captured and, if necessary, stored to provide electricity for small autonomous devices, such as satellites, laptops and nodes in sensor networks. Usually the power is stored as electricity but sometimes it is stored as other energy as with springs storing mechanical energy later converted to electricity as needed. Energy harvesting is a substantial business already and it will become a multi billion dollar business within ten years because, increasingly, it hits so many of the hot buttons - environmental, safe, secure, affordable, more convenient, brand enhancing and making new things possible. So far, the main commercial successes include such things as photovoltaics on space vehicles, road furniture and consumer goods, electrodynamics in bicycle dynamos and wristwatches and piezoelectrics in light switches, indeed many forms of EH in building controls.Off Grid Energy Independence, 3d ago

The use of cobots in the workplace brings with it a plethora of benefits that range from increased productivity to improved worker safety and satisfaction. Cobot technology has enabled businesses to take advantage of fewer labour costs due to their ability to complete tasks faster, with greater efficiency than human-operated machines. By leveraging artificial intelligence, cobots can respond to changing conditions in real-time, resulting in fewer errors and faster overall production times. This enables businesses to remain competitive and increase output without sacrificing quality. In addition to improved production times cobots also offer workers a safer work environment by taking on dangerous or tedious tasks, while allowing employees to focus on more meaningful tasks. Cobots are usually designed with sensors that detect when humans interact with them, allowing them to safely collaborate in close proximity. In addition, cobot guided processes require far less maintenance due to the fact that they lack moving parts when compared to traditional automation systems. While cobots have many advantages in the workplace there are still some drawbacks associated with their use. For instance, many companies may find that upfront costs associated with buying and setting up these robots may outpace the amount of money saved from improved productivity or avoided labor costs. Also, the mechanization of certain jobs could potentially lead to displacement of existing employees who are no longer needed for those roles. Therefore, it is important for businesses to weigh the costs versus the potential rewards before making a commitment to introducing cobots into their operations. It is clear that cobot technology has the potential to revolutionize the way businesses operate in a new era of industry 4.0 automation. To better understand how cobots function within this new environment let us now explore how motion sensors play an important role in their operation.Box Robotics, 20d ago
More highly automated production – “co-worker” robots are especially well suited for this. They are not contagious, because “if production is to be maintained during a pandemic, certain distances between workers must be maintained,” Patrick Schwarzkopf stated, Managing Director of the VDMA Robotics + Automation Association, explaining the advantages of the technology in current times. Admittedly, no one could have expected a health crisis of this magnitude in Germany before the COVID‑19 pandemic. Small or medium-sized companies in particular are not developing under the same economic conditions as a key player from the automotive industry.TODO, 11d ago

With a wide-ranging product and application portfolio, we have many manual and complex operational processes that have been developed over the years. Robotics process automation (RPA) offered a solution that could reduce employees’ tedious and repetitive tasks and cut costs across the organization. To date, we have successfully automated over 30,000 hours (annualized), have over 500 bots running in production, and saw a return on investment within the first year of production. We attribute this success to a focus on citizen development, partnership between business units, the flexibility of RPA, and a focus on governance. Our program was designed from the ground up, with people who aren’t working within an IT department to perform what has traditionally been IT work, also referred to as citizen development. The subject matter expert (SME) in a process is most likely to know the pain points, a sweet spot for applying RPA, so we built a training and coaching program to teach any employee how to use RPA and automate their work. Each trainee is asked to select a potential task for automation so that they leave the program with both knowledge and proof of the value proposition to be found in RPA. We believe citizen development will be inherent to our employee’s skillset in the future, a logical evolution of today’s productivity tools.cioapplications.com, 13d ago

In the short term, it’s a lot about getting the parts in to be able to build machines. We have more [customer] orders now than we’ve had in the history of the company. One of our toughest components to acquire are semiconductor chips. Rather than the usual cost of $10 to $20, our last batch cost $1,400. Crazy high prices, but we decided, “We’re going to bite the bullet and pay that high price.” SF: What part does automation play in the future of AGCO machinery? EH: The biggest focus for the company is to become the trusted partner for industry-leading smart-farming solutions by auto-mating the various elements of the machine function. We have a list of about 150 functions we’re working our way through to make it easier on the operator by having the machine sense when the conditions are changing with onboard calculations, and take control when the operator decides to put it in autopilot mode. We’ve increased our engineering spending by 20% each of the years I’ve been leading the company. We bought six technology businesses last year and invested in two more. For the future, we’re looking to sustainability even more, and precision agri-culture is an element of that — don’t waste any inputs, and get the most output you can. Making the most out of carbon sequestration and helping farmers take advantage of it is the next chapter.Successful Farming, 12d ago

The worlds of logistics and automotive manufacturing are experiencing major restructuring and development. The many different types of driverless transport systems represent a central component of this change. For example, vehicle chassis can be transported through production on driverless transport systems; packages are easily sorted with the help of a swarm of small bots. All of these applications require the correct positioning of these vehicles. There is a wide range of positioning technologies available for users to choose from. The technology of optical positioning, which uses cameras in the vehicles and data matrix codes on the floor, offers the user highly precise, absolute positioning. In combination with Pepperl+Fuchs’s read heads, its aluminum Data Matrix code bars offer users a rugged complete system for the incredibly accurate, absolute positioning of driverless transport systems.expo21xx.com, 4d ago
...” in 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic created a “new normal” for businesses and magnified the challenges of warehouse operations. Warehouse executives now need to innovate and design scalable systems to accommodate unanticipated demand and manage associated challenges. Computing and technology advancement, specifically edge computing, has enabled organizations to tactically leverage smart devices and mobile solutions. Miniaturization, increased performance and energy efficiency, and lowered smart device production costs have contributed to intelligent mobile devices adoption on warehouse floors. Smart sensor computing capabilities have improved significantly, allowing data processing and analysis at or near the source (“edge computing”) and minimizing the data transferred between the device and the platform. All these elements create a fertile ground for mobility solutions proliferation. Mobile barcode technology has taken center stage with increased adoption of mobility solutions.SAPinsider, 4d ago
We should look forward to unskilled and semiskilled workers’ upgrading from monotonous work because of AI and robotics. Of course, AI and robotics will have varying effects on different sectors; but as a whole, they are enablers and amplifiers of human work. As noted, the steam shovel did not disemploy construction workers. The taxi industry was not eliminated because of Uber’s technology; if anything, Uber’s new AI technology lowered the barriers of entry to the taxi industry. Musicians were not eliminated when music was digitized; instead, this innovation gave musicians larger platforms and audiences, allowing them to reach millions of people with the swipe of a screen. And dating apps running on AI have helped millions of people fall in love and live happily ever after.Mises Institute, 4d ago

Increased automation and the use of robots and artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to drastically change the nature of work, and whilst new jobs may be created that are complementary to machines and algorithms, future automation also poses a threat to the existing jobs of many workers (Acemoglu and Restrepo 2020). Labour displacement due to automation can have important social and political consequences, as shown by the impact of past technological advancements (Caprettini and Voth 2020). The threat of future automation waves is therefore likely to play a critical role in shaping workers’ response, the public discourse around economic inequality, and the role of the government in mitigating its effects. Despite the importance of understanding the link between the perceived threat of automation and workers’ responses, research on this topic has been held back by the difficulty of identifying exogenous sources of variation in perceived automation risk. To fill this gap in the literature, in a new paper (Golin and Rauh 2022), we provide evidence on the effect of fear of automation on workers’ behaviour, intentions, and preferences from a sample of almost 4,300 workers in the US.CEPR, 14d ago
Festo sees the next development thrust for industrial production in the shift towards a circular economy. "In nature, there is no waste and no wastage. We just have to learn to transfer these principles to our economic activity," Jung demands. Festo's Bionic Learning Network is therefore researching the automated cultivation of biomass. For example, algae offer great potential and an alternative to petroleum: they bind considerably more CO2 than land plants and metabolise components through photosynthesis that can be used for the production of medicines, cosmetics and bio-plastics. "In 2022, we presented our bioreactor 'PhotoBionicCell', which cultivates algae particularly efficiently through automation technology. At this year's HANNOVER MESSE, we will show the scaling of the system and thus the preliminary stage to industrialisation. Our customers increasingly perceive us as a technology partner for biological processes. Together with us, they can drive the transformation of industry. Innovations are the key to more sustainability," Jung continues.https://www.hannovermesse.de, 7d ago
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology are two of the most innovative technologies that have emerged in the last decade. AI enables machines to assist humans and make decisions, while blockchain technology is a distributed ledger that allows for secure, transparent and tamper-proof applications. The intersection between AI and blockchain technology has the potential to transform various industries by enhancing their security, transparency, and overall efficiency. ChatGPT by OpenAI is an example of how AI is evolving to create intelligent machines that can learn and produce like humans. ChatGPT is a large language model that can generate human-like responses to text-based queries. It is a breakthrough in natural language processing and has numerous applications for companies looking for ways to automate tasks and improve customer experience. Coupled with Blockchain, this makes for a powerful combination. But how can these two technologies work in tandem with each other? One of the most significant applications of the two technologies is in the field of cybersecurity. Cybersecurity threats are increasing at an alarming rate, and the traditional methods of securing systems are quickly becoming irrelevant to new attack vectors. AI can be used to detect and respond to threats, while blockchain technology can ensure the security and integrity of data.OODA Loop, 20d ago

We are convinced that empirical research in finance is in desperate need of reproducible code to form standards for otherwise repetitive tasks. Instructors and researchers have already reached out to us with grateful words about our book. Tidy Finance finds its way into lecture halls across the globe already today. Various recent developments support our call for increased transparency. For instance, Cam Harvey, the former editor of the Journal of Finance, and a former president of the American Finance Association, openly argues that the profession needs to tackle the replication crisis. Top journals in financial economics increasingly adopt code and data-sharing policies to increase transparency. The industry and academia are aware and concerned (if not alarmed) about these issues, which is why we believe that the timing for publishing...routledge.com, 4d ago

Broadly speaking, experts say age tech is a world of code-oriented products designed for, and when possible by, older people."If it can help prevent an older person's world from shrinking, that's probably age tech," said Henke. But, for now, the specific definition is loose. By some measures, Ben Franklin's glasses were an early version of age tech. And by all measures, many newer, computer-oriented devices — voice-activated biosensors that track speech patterns to tell physicians or other caregivers about early signs of depression or dementia, for example — also are age tech.Others suggest devices and services aimed at all consumers — self-driving cars, age-modified divisions of Uber and Lyft; even Airbnb — can qualify as age tech, as long as they serve the needs of older people and are digital, either directly or indirectly. For now, much of the current crop of age-specific tech is aimed at helping older people stay in their homes, not nursing facilities, for as long as possible.Sensors, tracking devices, smart speakers; all can and do connect to the internet and send key data to caregivers and others, helping users age in place. By some estimates, this world of devices already saves the public about $300 billion a year by keeping people out of nursing homes."I use AirTags to know where my wife is," said Wade, a longtime fundraiser for Alzheimer's Association of Southern California who said he now is also a full-time caretaker for his wife, whose dementia symptoms have become more severe."It's a simple solution. But I'd be in trouble without it."Generator Ventures' Kaplan said his company sees this end of the age tech market as smart business because many of the devices are sold to health providers and, as such, are covered by insurance. He also notes that these devices provide tangible help to a lot of people."It's what's actually happening in the market," Kaplan said. "There is a lot of talk about different things coming, in the future. But, for now, this is the sector that's probably the most real."A few other tech products are either being remarketed or rewired to reach older people. Phone apps that help users know when to take medicines, clothes and watches that track things like heart rates and blood sugar levels, food delivery services; all are at least somewhat oriented to older customers.Another world of technology — artificial intelligence — is still percolating, with useful versions either super expensive or not yet ready for a mass market. But the category is viewed as something that could be popular among older consumers of the 2030s and beyond. That's when the people hitting retirement age will be young enough to have used the internet, video games and other tech, all of their lives.Kaplan, among others, said the market will "open up" when people now in their 40s and 50s hit retirement age. But he noted that costs will be key to the development and popularity of artificial intelligence, and every other age tech product."The same economic inequalities we have now will be around when we have a lot of older people," he said. "That's not going away."Others say artificial intelligence could lead to a number of products aimed at a specific segment of older people — those with Alzheimer's or some other form of dementia. About 6.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's today and that number is expected to be nearly 13 million by 2050."For dementia patients, and to replace sensory losses in vision and hearing, artificial intelligence is a category with a lot of potential," said Karen Wong, who teaches about aging and technology at Cal State Fullerton's Aging Studies program. For now, some segments of the age tech market feel repurposed. This includes items that once were sold as toys that now are sold as calming devices for people battling severe stages of dementia."These cats respond to petting, hugging and motion much like the real ones you know and love but don't require any special care or feeding... "So reads the ad copy for the "Joy For All" line of animatronic cats sold by Hasbro for about $125."... This personally rich experience can bring joy and comfort to aging loved ones without any vet bills to worry about.""I guess that cat brings comfort to people," Wong said.Governing, 8d ago
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology offers great potential in the treatment of tissue and organ damage. Conventional approaches generally rely on a large form factor desktop bioprinter to create in vitro 3D living constructs before introducing them into the patient's body, which poses several drawbacks such as surface mismatches, structure damage, and high contamination along with tissue injury due to transport and large open-field surgery. In situ bioprinting inside a living body is a potentially transformational solution as the body serves as an excellent bioreactor. This work introduces a multifunctional and flexible in situ 3D bioprinter (F3DB), which features a high degree of freedom soft printing head integrated into a flexible robotic arm to deliver multilayered biomaterials to internal organs/tissues. The device has a master-slave architecture and is operated by a kinematic inversion model and learning-based controllers. The 3D printing capabilities with different patterns, surfaces, and on a colon phantom are also tested with different composite hydrogels and biomaterials. The F3DB capability to perform endoscopic surgery is further demonstrated with fresh porcine tissue. The new system is expected to bridge a gap in the field of in situ bioprinting and support the future development of advanced endoscopic surgical robots.interestingengineering.com, 21d ago

There is also one completely new 1,500 word subsection in the revised article. A number of readers, including some of the above, pointed out an unresolved tension in the earlier version. On the one hand, I argue that although most consequentialist critiques accept that the key issue with autonomous weapons is whether they can comply with IHL as well as human soldiers, those critiques focus almost exclusively on the limits of AWS technology, ignoring the far more serious limits on the ability of humans to make rational decisions. On the other hand, I argue that many deontological critiques of autonomous weapons are misguided because they assume that killer robots “decide” in a manner akin to humans, when in fact they are (pending artificial general intelligence) simply very sophisticated tools for carrying out the intent of their human programmers and operators. Read together, those arguments raise an important question: namely, are the human programmers and operators of autonomous weapons not subject to the same cognitive, physiological, situational, and emotional limits as human soldiers — and humans asked to exercise meaningful human control?...Opinio Juris, 4d ago

This is not a rant from an Indian H1B reject, but rather from someone who was born in Montreal and moved to the KW and GTA area for tech opportunities. My background is that I have visited or spent time in many parts of Quebec obviously, but also Alberta (Calgary), Boston, New York City, and Washington. I have also had the privilege to spend weeks seeing the countries of Spain, Portugal, France and Italy before I relocated to Ontario. To clarify my situation, I live in KW but drive to Toronto, and Hamilton almost every week. I thought living in Ontario would be more like what I saw at first glance in the US compared to my home of Montreal, because it seems like that on the surface. However, I was really shocked when exploring the province of Ontario of how much poverty, crime, and economic despair there currently is. Things I would take for granted to be part of a developed country are simply not present. To start, I want to dispel the myth perpetrated on blind that Canada (Ontario) is "safe" or even "safer" than the US. Walking in the downtown of most cities in Ontario you experience a lot of mentally unstable people, trash, drugs, and boarded up storefronts. Yes, it may be a little bit better than the absolute worse areas of LA, Seattle, and the Bay Area but it is measurably worse than the downtown of any of the US cities I visited. In Toronto at Allan Gardens there are tens of tents and people actively lighting fires to keep warm. It has occurred to me twice driving in downtown Toronto for someone to hit my driver's window while stopped for no apparent reason. Kitchener, Hamilton, and London, also have the same issues for which it would be too tedious to provide more individual examples of. What is untold about crime statistics between Canada and the US is that in America crime seems to be concentrated in specific neighborhoods that are very easy to avoid, whereas in Canada crime occurs more in areas that are heavily frequented by regular people. Even though NY, Boston and Washington have higher murder rates on paper, if you stick to central and desirable areas they feel a lot safer than those in Toronto and other cities in Ontario.I was also really disappointed by the comparative lack of fresh produce in the grocery stores. Especially in Ontario, there is basically one main owner of grocery chains and that is Loblaws. They may have like 5 different brands but they are all the same company. Metro and Sobeys seem to be the only secondary players here. Very few actually independent grocers exist. Basically, what this means for everyday consumers is that prices are astronomical and quality is awful. It is literally difficult to find fresh fish, and bread here. I have been to so many supermarkets that either didn't have fish, or where a lot of the selection was near expiry. Most of the bread in stores come from bakery brands owned by Loblaws who add awful sugars and preservatives. All of this while they can charge more than in the USA/Quebec. I heard on the news that Canada's grocery industry margins are double that of the US. This is what Canada gets for instituting lots of regulations on its economy and having an oligopoly that affects a lot of sectors, including groceries. This leads into the next issue which is the cost of living and quality of life. The people of Ontario especially have just lost all common sense. They want to "protect the environment" by claiming to reduce sprawl and make only small apartments and maybe townhomes affordable for even the upper middle-class. However, this is merely virtue signalling as they are perfectly fine having laxer emissions regulations on their numerous factories than what I have found to be the case elsewhere. Across southern Ontario the air quality is really bad due to this mainly, with cities like Hamilton and Kitchener and parts of the GTA noticeably affected. The environmental targets are also contradicted by refusing to build and maintain transit infrastructure or creating walkable areas. Much of the Toronto transit system is in need of upgrades and expansion even when compared to the transit systems in New York, Boston, or Washington. All of this is to say that even as a tech worker, your quality of life in Ontario is basically living in a small cheaply made apartment or townhome and still using your car to get everywhere. You basically get the worst of the US and Europe, as the US allows more space in exchange of car dependence and Europe allows for walkability and transit. Furthermore, with car insurance and gasoline being more expensive than the US, you will feel the financial pain due to this poor urbanism.Another topic of note is that the infrastructure in Ontario is really bad nowadays. I'm talking about hospitals, schools, and roads. I have been to several hospitals in the province and those that are not in downtown Toronto are simply forgotten about. The care there is probably worse than what blinders in India are receiving. First of all, they are very dirty, old, and overcrowded with long wait times. On top of that, after you wait the doctor won't check you properly and there is a high chance of a wrong diagnosis, which is what has happened to me. I am from Montreal which has a bad reputation for healthcare, but from my personal experience it has been that although there are very long wait times, the facilities are nice and modern and the doctors seem to take more time with each patient. Furthermore, the schools in Ontario also look awful at least from the outside, it seems like no money has been put into them in decades and sometimes there are even trailers outside of them serving as "temporary classrooms" due to the surge of students caused by excessive immigration which is also one of the causes for a lot of the other problems described in this text. Also, the roads seem to be getting worse with constant traffic, and increasingly nasty potholes that aren't getting fixed as well as concrete falling from overpasses. All of these downsides are further compounded by the bad Canadian economy. It has comparatively low salaries, an increasingly weak currency, low growth prospects, significant corruption, increasing authoritarianism, and high taxes with top income brackets of over 50% and a sales tax of 13% (in Ontario). Unfortunately, all of those taxes are paid in order to receive the subpar services described above. It is not like Europe where you pay a lot in tax but at least in countries like France and Spain, you receive truly excellent healthcare and top-notch infrastructure. There is also a lot of corruption and fraud in the Canadian economy with mortgage fraud and insurance fraud being so common the populace seems numb to it. The fact that the government has set the precedent that it can freeze financial assets without a warrant has also decreased investor confidence in the country. Furthermore, the OECD predicts Canada's economy to have the lowest GDP per capita growth among its members for the next few decades, meaning there are few reasons to invest in this country's future.I close this rant by asking myself the question: can Canada truly be considered a "developed" country anymore? With unsafe cities, polluted air, lack of access to quality food, inadequate housing, increasing levels of corruption, creeping authoritarianism, lacking transportation infrastructure, almost inexistant healthcare, overcrowded schools, low salaries and savings it hardly seems that way. I often see blinders talk about how the "quality of life" is better in Canada after they moved from the US or how it is a good place to raise a family, but I don't see any reasonable aspect where that is the case compared to any other "developed" country. Finally, if you're living in poverty, why not live somewhere warm at least? With increasing authoritarianism, even China might be a better place to call home these days as at least its economy has a brighter future. Goodbye Ontario and hopefully Canada.Blind, 4d ago

Recent advances in large pretrained language models have unlocked new exciting applications for Natural Language Generation for creative tasks, such as lyrics or humour generation. In this talk we will discuss recent works by our team at Alexa AI and discuss current challenges: (1) Pun understanding and generation: We release new datasets for pun understanding and the novel task of context-situated pun generation, and demonstrate the value of our annotations for pun classification and generation tasks. (2) Song lyric generation: we design a hierarchical lyric generation framework that enables us to generate pleasantly-singable lyrics without training on melody-lyric aligned data, and show that our approach is competitive with strong baselines supervised on parallel data. (3) Create with Alexa: a multimodal story creation experience recently launched on Alexa devices, which leverages story text generation models in tandem with story visualization and background music generation models to produce multimodal stories for kids. The Hub, 4d ago
With the strong growth being experienced (and further forecast) within the blue economy, significantly driven by the requirement for energy security, there is increasingly an industry workforce shortage. This shortage alongside the work/life balance expectation of a new generation entering the industry requires a new approach to how we manage our marine operations. The introduction of larger, longer endurance Uncrewed Surface Vessels is not only driving a transformation in how these vessels are operated but also how conventional crewed vessels collect and process geodata. The improvement in vessel connectivity alongside increased automation and digitalisation is driving a major change in the operational model for offshore geodata collection. This change in offshore operational model has implications for the workforce currently involved in the industry, from trainee through to the end client, as well as for the future workforce joining our industry.Ocean Business | Southampton | 18-20 April 2023, 4d ago
AI has proven useful in many areas like clerical tasks of managing or analyzing medical records and processing insurance claims. To give early warning or predictive diagnosis, it may also be used to analyze data gathered from patient wearables or in-home sensors used in virtual hospital environments (more on that in next trend). All of these applications combined point to artificial intelligence and machine learning becoming major healthcare trends in the future year.CRN - India, 4d ago
Indoor Mapping has been popular in recent years. Although Google demonstrated it nearly a decade ago as a potential way to navigate around a store, it never caught on due to the difficulty of mapping indoor areas and the inability to guarantee a precise location both horizontally and vertically. However, advances in mobile navigation, such as the introduction of VPS (Visual Positioning System) algorithms, more precise SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) algorithms, WIFI triangulation, and mobile communication cell location (General Packet Radio Services- GPRS), have made it a more accurate and reliable solution.Geospatial World, 4d ago
One of the earliest proposed applications in the blockchain space was related to the registration and management of intellectual property (IP) rights. The reason for that was that IP is already dematerialized and detached from the physical world and is relatively well standardized in legal and economic terms. The world of (hard) IP also relies heavily on registries, the apparent bread and butter of distributed ledgers. Yet so far tokenization and smart contracts failed to make a dent in the traditional procedures and institutions that govern IP. Also, despite the rise (and fall) of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), the tokenization of ownership and rights, and the automation of rules failed to establish a resilient, autonomous approach to organizing cultural markets, the remuneration of artists, the distribution and licensing of works, or the engagement with audiences. What are the reasons for this missed opportunity? What could we learn from the NFT story?...IVIR, 4d ago
Ochanomizu University in April 2022 established the Institute for Gendered Innovations(3) to promote research, innovation, and social communication based on gender perspectives, strengthening its track record in research on gender equality issues. Based on its expertise in trustworthy and ethical AI, Fujitsu developed technology to mitigate intersectional bias(4) to prevent AI from discriminating against different groups due to bias in learning data.Within the new joint research program, the two parties will combine Fujitsu's AI ethics technology and Ochanomizu University's knowledge in gendered innovations to conduct pioneering R&D in AI solutions that enable quantitative and objective gender equality measures, and promote the development of talent able to contribute to the solution of societal issues through interdisciplinary expertise.BackgroundGender equality, which also represents one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) remains an important issue worldwide. In the Global Gender Gap Report 2022, Japan was ranked 116th out of 146 countries worldwide(5), revealing significant gender inequality persists in the country. To address this issue, the Japanese Cabinet Office implemented measures including "The Fifth Basic Plan for Gender Equality"(6) as a basic act for realizing a gender equal society. However, social implementation of measures to achieve gender equality continues to be an ongoing challenge, as concerns - both in Japan and other countries worldwide - remain, that efforts to empower women might on the other hand create new, unintentional unfairness toward other parties. To address these issues, Fujitsu and Ochanomizu University established the "Fujitsu-Ochanomizu University Social Collaboration Program for AI Ethics" to explore the possibility of utilizing AI solutions to contribute to the solution of gender inequalities. However, as AI itself can cause risks including the discrimination of minority groups due to bias in the AI training data, social trustworthiness represents a central focus in the development of AI systems. To this end, Fujitsu and Ochanomizu University aim to develop practical solutions to gender issues, while addressing the risk of bias in AI by leveraging Fujitsu's strength in R&D in ethical AI technologies and Ochanomizu University's research on gendered innovations. In addition to their R&D activities, the two parties further plan to nurture talent able to take the lead in solving societal issues by combining approaches from information science and social sciences.Outline of the "Fujitsu-Ochanomizu University Social Collaboration Program for AI Ethics"1. Period:March 1, 2023 - March 31, 20262. Location of the collaborative research laboratory:Institute for Gendered Innovations, Ochanomizu University (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan)3. Outline of the joint researchAs a first step of the joint project, Fujitsu and Ochanomizu University aim to develop an AI solution for highly reliable human resource assessment by the end of March 2024 to contribute to the realization of a diverse, equal and inclusive society. To approach ethical risks in AI models, the two parties will apply Fujitsu's technology to mitigate intersectional bias to human resource assessment AI technology and verify the fairness of the assessment results using evaluation methods including interviews and workshops, utilizing Ochanomizu University's expertise in the social sciences. Within the verification tests, the two parties will use AI technology to conduct quantitative analysis of the fairness of the assessments and present the decision-making process and facts behind the analysis results to ensure that the AI eliminates any unequal treatment of women, but at the same time does not create any new unfairness affecting the total majority. Based on the results of the tests, the two parties will further improve this human resource assessment AI to ultimately develop a technology that ensures fair and nondiscriminatory decisions. Utilizing the results of this joint research, Fujitsu and Ochanomizu University will propose concrete solutions that contribute to the solution of gender inequality and societal issues. The two partners further plan to hold seminars and workshops on various themes related to AI technologies and societal issues to nurture future specialists and leaders able to address societal issues through cross-sectional collaborations.4. The industry's expansion is linked to increased security against escalating vehicle thefts, quicker insurance claims processing, and growing awareness of the need of driving safety. Dashboard cameras are used by the police force as well as for private and professional purposes. The surge in false insurance claims and medical payments based on fictitious auto accidents is a significant element driving product demand. In order to resolve insurance claims more precisely and swiftly, it has also been noted that insurance firms are promoting the usage of dashboard cameras in vehicles.Furthermore, personal vehicle users are dominating the market because dash cams are typically inexpensive and easy to install. High-definition dash cam recording has become common since digital services have been implemented and widely standardised. Standard definition dash cams are also an option, and they now control the dash cam industry since they're not as costly to produce and market. The entry-level of the market has decreased and become more uniform globally as a result of technical advancements. The strict rules certain nations have enacted against dashcams are indeed the major factor anticipated to impede the growth of the global market. In certain European nations, like Austria, Belgium, and Switzerland, the use of these cameras is prohibited by law and regarded as an invasion of privacy. Violators are subject to severe fines, which restrains the market's expansion.Technology InsightsBy Technology, basic technology segment accounted for the largest market share in 2022 and is likely to continue to dominate the industry over the forecast period. Dash cameras, which have minimal features and technology, are now easily available owing to manufacturers, who have greatly reduced the entry-level. These dash cams are reasonably priced and easy to install. Basic features are sufficient for the majority of customers. Dash cams with basic technology are more common in underdeveloped countries due to their simple manufacturing processes and inexpensive production costs.Product InsightsIn terms of Product, the 1-channel product segment dominated the market share in 2022 and is estimated to lead the market over the forecast period. The market has experienced substantial growth as a result of the increase of 1-channel dash cams at low prices. 1-channel dash cams often only have the ability to capture the front view and have limited battery life and storage. The most fundamental, entry-level dash cams on the market are 1-channel models.Video Quality InsightsIn terms of Video Quality, The SD & HD video quality segment accounted for the largest share in 2022. One of a dash cam's most crucial features is video quality because it can be crucial when it comes to going over the footage. Due to its affordability and ability to record common incidents, such as number plates during collisions for insurance purposes, customers who use dash cameras in their automobiles prefer SD & HD video quality devices.Application InsightsIn terms of Application, the personal vehicle application segment accounted for the largest share in 2022. As dashboard cameras are frequently simple to set up and operate, customers don't need to spend much time learning about the features before buying the product in-person or online. As personal vehicles have become more common and more affordably priced, dash cam manufacturers have found a great potential for advancement.Fill Out Details to Receive FREE Sample Report Copy Here:...openPR.com, 4d ago

Ondas and Siemens are active in the conversations around how this will happen, and we will talk a lot more about that today. At OAS, we have also seen fleet adoption begin as Airobotics secured initial commercial orders for the Optimus system from customers and partners in the UAE where we are beginning citywide deployments of urban drone infrastructure in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This is a development in the drone industry that is nothing short of groundbreaking. Flying autonomous unmanned systems in a densely populated urban setting is an unparalleled achievement and demonstrates the massive lead we have in defining these UAS markets. In short, we believe Ondas entered 2023 positions to drive significant increase in revenue, which we believe will help support the scaling of our company and put us on a path to profitability.Insider Monkey, 4d ago
Governments around the world are prioritising investment in technologies to facilitate violence rather than equality or peace. This includes tremendous investment in “modernisation” of nuclear arsenals, surveillance, cyber warfare capabilities, militarisation of borders including with the use of drones, and exploration of how to weaponize emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. “Killer robots’’, also known as autonomous weapons systems, are being designed with unavoidable algorithmic bias regarding factors such as race, disability, and gender, and could be programmed to “engage a target” (strike to kill) with no human operator or control. The inherently unpredictable nature of this complex system makes evasion of meaningful human control a threat to international humanitarian law requirements of accountability, proportionality, and assurance of distinction during armed conflicts. Meanwhile, data breaches as a tactic of cyber warfare have revealed sensitive data about sexual and reproductive health – information that can potentially lead to incarceration where abortion or same-sex relations are criminalised.reachingcriticalwill.org, 5d ago

It’s exciting, too, because as Nadella noted in his introduction to Copilot, nobody likes the inevitable donkey work involved in producing quality output. And there’s a lot of donkeywork: even opening a new document, looking for the right template, then saving it to the right place eats into productivity time. Make that go away, and everyone’s happier; and no, let’s not go down the road of the economic myth that technology imperils jobs. A hundred years ago economist Henry Hazlitt noted ‘Among the most viable of all economic delusions is the belief that machines on net balance create unemployment.’ He also pointed out that ‘The worker with the best set of machinery and technology behind him is the most productive, the highest paid and the most secure’ – and this Copilot sure does look like some mighty fine machinery.IT Brief Australia, 5d ago
Let’s face it, as a drone pilot our eyes in a similar manner as Christmas did with remote control toys. If you love learning new technology, drones will keep you on the edge of your seat for decades. Drones constantly evolve and test the boundaries of the airspace. Cameras are always getting better, aerodynamics evolve and airframes test the edge of payload capacity. Flying drones requires a deep understanding of complex systems like GPS, gimbals, cameras and obstacle avoidance sensors. This knowledge is extremely valuable in a wide array of industries.Drone U™, 5d ago
In this talk, I will present recent results in formal synthesis for robotics. First, I will review recent advances in formal synthesis for multi-agent planning and control. Scalability of the synthesis process is critical for large multi-agent systems, and the presented method reasons about complex specifications in order to decompose the specification into smaller specifications that can be assigned to individual agents or sub-teams of agents. This is accomplished using an abstract rewriting system to transform a formula in Signal Temporal Logic (STL) into a set of disjoint formulae whose satisfaction entails satisfaction of the original STL formula. Next, I will present methods for scaling formal synthesis when a model of the system is unavailable. Using model-free reinforcement learning, we design a method for training policies on individual tasks. The process is designed to allow both Boolean and temporal composition of those tasks. This process allows training for a small set of tasks to enable an exponential set of realizable behaviors, with guarantees on the execution of those behaviors...wpi.edu, 5d ago

Moreover, space exploration, due to its characteristic high media impact, is able to focus not only the interest but also the custom and approval of public opinion. And this too will favour the use of AI-equipped robots in space missions. While the latter will become increasingly sophisticated and autonomous, will there still be a role in Space for human beings? The first to answer – in the affirmative, needless to say – are the astronauts. It is understandable, but in order to try to contextualise the theme, it is worth recalling two illustrative episodes of opposite significance that lead one to reflect on the human-machine dichotomy in Space. Both events date back to the dawn of astronautics, or rather cosmonautics.Geopolitical Futures, 26d ago
In Japan, a driver shortage in the logistics industry over the last few years is expected to result in what is known as the “Year 2024 Problem” in logistics. In this context, the Standardization of Fresh Produce Distribution is being implemented across Japan as a government-led initiative to integrate logistics rules to achieve efficient distribution. Against this backdrop, a lack of truck waiting areas, as well as truck unloading and loading bays, have long been a source of concern around the fresh produce building at Nagoya Central Wholesale Market Main Office. In this demonstration project, indoor/outdoor position trackers will be attached to forklifts, personnel, and pallets used for transporting items within the fresh produce building, and quantitative data will be recorded on the lines of flow of each measured factor within the market. By visualizing the lines of flow of people and items and how the site is used, which could not be monitored previously, the quantitative data will aid in studies to establish a new in-market logistics model that will help to solve issues such as how to use space more efficiently and prevent accidents through operational improvements within the market. In February, indoor/outdoor position trackers are scheduled to begin collecting data on lines of flow. In March, the demonstration project’s results are scheduled to be announced at a presentation on the findings of the demonstration project.Bisinfotech, 18d ago
Reinforcement learning (RL) encompasses a class of machine learning (ML) techniques that can be used to solve sequential decision-making problems. RL techniques have found widespread applications in numerous domains, including financial services, autonomous navigation, industrial control, and e-commerce. The objective of an RL problem is to train an agent that, given an observation from its environment, will choose the optimal action that maximizes cumulative reward. Solving a business problem with RL involves specifying the agent’s environment, the space of actions, the structure of observations, and the right reward function for the target business outcome. In policy-based RL methods, the outcome of model training is often a policy, which defines a probability distribution over the actions given an observation. The optimal policy will maximize the cumulative returns obtained by the agent.CoinGenius, 13d ago
To continue to keep our soldiers well supplied, the further integration of digital controls and communications is paramount. One of the technologies being adopted by the U.S. Army is the blockchain as an integral tool to track and manage inventory assets in real-time with information available at all points in the network instantly. Data analysis is also vital to keeping inventory moving and being able to identify trouble spots and react quickly to alleviate disruptions. The military is increasingly adopting practices and technology from civilian companies. AI and machine learning are tools being developed by the military to keep up with the immense amount of data produced by the web of agencies and civilian organizations involved in the supply of all of the Armed Forces, and this will alleviate much of the tedious work currently done by personnel. The upkeep of military logistics is a never-ending task and further integrating digital technologies will be what keeps American soldiers safe and ready for future missions.SlashGear, 21d ago

With LYDIA Voice 9, EPG is once again underlining its role as a technological leader in the voice industry. The main feature of the new release is its multi-language recognition. LYDIA Voice is now capable of recognising multiple languages in parallel and in real time – a unique innovation on the voice market. This new development has been made possible thanks to multithreading, which enables several processor cores to be used simultaneously. Since version 8, LYDIA Voice has worked on the basis of neural networks and deep learning. For the first time, this new release enables numerous neural networks to be used in parallel to process voice recognition. This results in even quicker and more accurate voice recognition. LYDIA Voice is now also capable of recognising several languages in parallel. “LYDIA Voice now recognises several languages at the same time,” says Tim Just, CEO Voice Solutions. “While the solutions of other providers require users to undergo complex voice training, LYDIA Voice has not required any voice training at all for a number of years now. And now our solution is immediately able to recognise several languages at the same time. This means that the onboarding process is even quicker for non-native speakers and they can be deployed more flexibly.”...IntraLogisteX, 5d ago
There are those who’ll say that the AI risks outweigh the benefits; from privacy concerns to the sci-fi notion that the AI robots will take over. That is not realistic. AI is here to stay, and this technology will open up new discoveries in all aspects of life. Any major technology-driven shift will result in jobs lost, and also new careers created. AI will produce positive developments, but this tool must be used carefully to avoid risks to livelihoods and privacy.Psychology Today, 5d ago
Artificial intelligence (AI) is already having an ever-greater influence on everyday lives, so it’s no surprise that it has a growing role to play within the fleet sector to help improve driver performance, support duty of care and cut costs. Particularly in new developments, AI video telematics is expected to transform how vehicle operations approach road safety. In the broadest sense, AI is about using machines to perform tasks that would typically have required some form of human intervention and demonstrate behaviors associated with human intelligence. Powerful in-vehicle AI video telematics will make it easy to identify key areas of risk, reduce collisions and near misses and ensure employees get home safely.Food Logistics, 5d ago
Such stack actuators are simpler and cheaper than conventional technology and could be used in a variety of ways: to drive pumps, as switches in steering wheels, control buttons with haptic feedback, and much more. This is a potential that Gabor Kovacs has brought to maturity, first at Empa and later at the Empa spin-off CTsystems, which he founded in August 2012 – from initial tinkering with various materials to the announcement of success four months ago: acquisition by the industrial group Datwyler, with which the team has already been cooperating since 2018. At the latter's site in Schattdorf in the canton of Uri, an automated production plant is currently being built and is due to go into operation soon. In short, the step into the market is imminent.empa.ch, 5d ago
With the complexity of today’s chip processes, wafer transport must be rigorously controlled to be as stable and vibration-free as possible. Otherwise, vibration can generate particles that can contaminate the wafer or risk causing minute flaws in the wafer’s shape. At the same time, if the wafer transport is too slow, productivity suffers, and costs go up. We’ve developed deep expertise in solving the motion-control challenges for many front-end wafer handling applications. Our cross-technology portfolio combines open app-based controllers, compact servodrives specifically developed for semiconductor tool applications, and linear technology systems engineered to provide vibration-free accurate motion.Design World, 5d ago

The movement of commodities from one location to another is referred to as logistics. The comprehensive procedure from production to distribution at the point of sale is referred to as contract logistics. It is a more comprehensive plan of action that incorporates supply chain management procedures with traditional logistics. Contract logistics businesses take care of tasks including developing and planning supply chains, building facilities, warehousing, delivering and distributing goods, processing orders and payments, collecting inventory, and even handling some aspects of customer support. This is the practise of assigning work related to resource management to outside service providers.Market Overview:It is projected that the expansion of the contract logistics market will be fueled by the rising government initiatives for economic diversification of energy-based businesses into sectors leading to infrastructure development, industrialization, and digitization. Contract logistics services are in high demand as a result of e-commerce. Several non-asset entrants and current companies are being drawn in by the booming e-commerce industry, increase in foreign direct investment, and better attention on risk management in the supply chains. This is a key factor in the increase in contract logistics market revenue. Also, the manufacturing sector's rapid expansion and focus on core competencies, the growing demand for job optimization, achieving cost efficiency, and technology supply chain integrations all help to drive market growth. The total growth of the contract logistics sector will be hampered by a number of restrictions and difficulties. The logistics database management is tough because of elements including potential misunderstandings that result in incorrect interpretations of facts, data, and information. The lack of experienced individuals who could comprehend and fix the issues to retain transparency causes the regional differences and the supply chain's complexity to negatively affect the overall process. Budget restrictions are another possible hindrance to the market.Due to the crucial role being played by variables including the greater concentration of material handling organisations, the Distribution service of Contract Logistics in the Market has grown at a notable rate over the past few years and in the projection term. It is anticipated that the segment's Outsourcing sector would dominate Insourcing in terms of market share for Contract Logistics.
