This concept is further outlined in 19 practices, or performance recommendations, that are divided into foundational and advanced. Foundational practices, such as the identification of member ESG/SDG priorities, enabling effective communication by adopting common ESG/SDG terminology and principles, or providing ESG/SDG information and education to members, are basic and transactional. Advanced practices are more complex, strategic, and impactful: embedding ESG/SDGs into an association’s governance, developing ESG/SDG standards and certification programs, or adopting and implementing social purpose approaches to help solve social and environmental issues are just a few examples of such advanced practices. — Corporate Knights, 8d ago

India has pioneered several ground-breaking initiatives – for example, the use of satellite remote sensing and geospatial technology for better climate information and decision support, the first domestic carbon market and investments in disaster-resilient infrastructure. In terms of creating financial resilience, the RBI, as a recent member of the NGFS, is actively looking at de-risking the Indian financial sector through robust identification, monitoring and management of climate risks.8 All of these measures demonstrate India’s ability to increase resilience through the loss and damage financing agreed upon during the COP27 discussions. To fully realise the value of this funding, the country must prioritise better quantifying the costs and benefits of resilience, improved risk information and cross-decisional coordination. G20 provides a distinctive opportunity for India to spearhead a unified model of resilience adaptation building among developing nations. The G20 has constituted a separate working group on DRR for the first time to encourage dialogue between developed and developing nations on effective response, preparedness and resilience building to extreme climatic events. Being at the helm of affairs, India’s key priority at this international platform would be to highlight the financing gap in fast-tracking DRR and CCA initiatives in a unified framework that looks at participatory approaches, increased women and youth participation, strengthened international collaboration, improved climate predictions and enhanced climate governance. — ORF, 18d ago

...at 1010data. In this regard, governance focuses on the essential infrastructure for data-driven enterprises: In contrast, stewardship focuses on wringing value from data: Policies versus tasks. Data governance is the ownership and management of the policies, processes and procedures for data, said Claire Thompson, chief data and analytics officer at Legal & General Group, a financial services company. In contrast, data stewardship is undertaking tasks needed to ensure adherence to and compliance with the data policies and frameworks. The data steward interprets and implements required processes on a day-to-day basis. Outcomes versus inputs. Data governance is the outcome while data stewardship is the input required to achieve it, said Graeme Thompson, CIO at Informatica. Data governance includes what someone is trying to achieve and the mindset necessary to achieve it. Data stewardship involves defining ownership and responsibility for different pieces of data and for the processes that generate the data. The pooling of data, and the governance of shared data resources is a key concern in the data intensive digital society. There are multiple efforts to establish appropriate institutional, legal, and technological frameworks in that space, from the European Union’s Data Governance Act to various platforms, such as the Amsterdam Data exchange. Data governance requires a multi-disciplinary approach, as it regards questions about the compatibility of fundamental rights (such as privacy, data protection and the prohibition of discrimination), technological infrastructures and architectures (of data collection, anonymization, or processing) and the social, political and institutional challenges (the control over data being a source of power, business advantage, sovereignty, etc.). What kind of role can blockchain-based solutions reasonably play in that ecosystem? What are the technological as well as non-technological constraints or conditions of the feasibility of a distributed solution? What are the institutional aspects of data sharing and data pooling, and are they compatible with the modes of organization decentralized, “trustless” technological intermediaries offer? What are the experiences of successful and failed projects which tried to establish public (or private) data (eco)systems in various domains, such as identity data, financial data, property data, contract data and transactional data. — IVIR, 4d ago

Seeing Data Governance at the top of this list aligns with a number of leading indicators for CDO attention and spend we have seen at ALTR. With reduced budgets and head counts, we are hearing from the industry that base level Governance topics will take priority in 2023. Things like improving data pipelines for speed of data delivery, data security, data access streamline, and quality will take precedence over initiatives like lineage or data cataloging. I think a number of data catalog projects have been stalled or remain in jeopardy as the catalog workloads tends to boil the ocean. Look for small projects within data governance being completed quickly with tightly aligned teams. Key to this will be data governance tool sets that interoperate and work together without requiring large professional services spends to realize base level data governance practices such as security and pipeline improvement. — insideBIGDATA, 5d ago

Ochanomizu University in April 2022 established the Institute for Gendered Innovations(3) to promote research, innovation, and social communication based on gender perspectives, strengthening its track record in research on gender equality issues. Based on its expertise in trustworthy and ethical AI, Fujitsu developed technology to mitigate intersectional bias(4) to prevent AI from discriminating against different groups due to bias in learning data.Within the new joint research program, the two parties will combine Fujitsu's AI ethics technology and Ochanomizu University's knowledge in gendered innovations to conduct pioneering R&D in AI solutions that enable quantitative and objective gender equality measures, and promote the development of talent able to contribute to the solution of societal issues through interdisciplinary expertise.BackgroundGender equality, which also represents one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) remains an important issue worldwide. In the Global Gender Gap Report 2022, Japan was ranked 116th out of 146 countries worldwide(5), revealing significant gender inequality persists in the country. To address this issue, the Japanese Cabinet Office implemented measures including "The Fifth Basic Plan for Gender Equality"(6) as a basic act for realizing a gender equal society. However, social implementation of measures to achieve gender equality continues to be an ongoing challenge, as concerns - both in Japan and other countries worldwide - remain, that efforts to empower women might on the other hand create new, unintentional unfairness toward other parties. To address these issues, Fujitsu and Ochanomizu University established the "Fujitsu-Ochanomizu University Social Collaboration Program for AI Ethics" to explore the possibility of utilizing AI solutions to contribute to the solution of gender inequalities. However, as AI itself can cause risks including the discrimination of minority groups due to bias in the AI training data, social trustworthiness represents a central focus in the development of AI systems. To this end, Fujitsu and Ochanomizu University aim to develop practical solutions to gender issues, while addressing the risk of bias in AI by leveraging Fujitsu's strength in R&D in ethical AI technologies and Ochanomizu University's research on gendered innovations. In addition to their R&D activities, the two parties further plan to nurture talent able to take the lead in solving societal issues by combining approaches from information science and social sciences.Outline of the "Fujitsu-Ochanomizu University Social Collaboration Program for AI Ethics"1. Period:March 1, 2023 - March 31, 20262. Location of the collaborative research laboratory:Institute for Gendered Innovations, Ochanomizu University (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan)3. Outline of the joint researchAs a first step of the joint project, Fujitsu and Ochanomizu University aim to develop an AI solution for highly reliable human resource assessment by the end of March 2024 to contribute to the realization of a diverse, equal and inclusive society. To approach ethical risks in AI models, the two parties will apply Fujitsu's technology to mitigate intersectional bias to human resource assessment AI technology and verify the fairness of the assessment results using evaluation methods including interviews and workshops, utilizing Ochanomizu University's expertise in the social sciences. Within the verification tests, the two parties will use AI technology to conduct quantitative analysis of the fairness of the assessments and present the decision-making process and facts behind the analysis results to ensure that the AI eliminates any unequal treatment of women, but at the same time does not create any new unfairness affecting the total majority. Based on the results of the tests, the two parties will further improve this human resource assessment AI to ultimately develop a technology that ensures fair and nondiscriminatory decisions. Utilizing the results of this joint research, Fujitsu and Ochanomizu University will propose concrete solutions that contribute to the solution of gender inequality and societal issues. The two partners further plan to hold seminars and workshops on various themes related to AI technologies and societal issues to nurture future specialists and leaders able to address societal issues through cross-sectional collaborations.4. On the literacy front, Canada is playing a 40-year catch up so more and faster education programs delivered by experts in the knowledge-based economy is key. The pilot Innovation Asset Collective (which I co-founded) needs to be scaled to more sectors, particularly those that are foundational to Canada’s economy such as agriculture and resources. There needs to be a national data strategy that guides the use of public and private data in a way that allows innovative Canadian companies to responsibly access data while preserving civil liberties, especially privacy. Finally, Canada can develop a standards strategy because technology standards are the new battleground for dominance in global value chains. Companies with strong IP positions have a disproportionate advantage in standards setting. — winnipegsun, 15d ago
