new Given the increasingly extreme weather caused by climate change, it is vital to fully understand our existing resources, such as the often ignored ‘invisible water’ underground. Despite its crucial role in droughts and floods, representing 90% of all natural disasters, water storage in river catchments (notably beneath the ground) is a major source of uncertainty in future prediction capabilities of hydrological and climate models. Meanwhile, peatlands are an important natural carbon store, and understanding the effects of complex hydrology on their health and regeneration is a topic of significant importance, with wet peatlands linking to all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.University of Birmingham, 8h ago

new It's time to reimagine the future of infrastructure—a future in which infrastructure meets human needs and aspirations while allowing nature to thrive. We live in a world where 770 million people lack access to electricity; 2 billion people do not have safe drinking water—including between 9 million to 45 million Americans a year; 3.6 billion people live without adequate sanitation services; and, in the United States, 43% of public roadways are in poor or mediocre condition. Improving access to reliable and sustainable infrastructure is essential—both in the US and around the world. Poorly designed infrastructure can cause significant harm to biodiversity, our climate, and the natural environment we rely upon for critical services. It can destroy habitats; block migratory corridors for wildlife; cause wildlife mortality from vehicle strikes and electrocution; degrade vital natural resources; deplete nonrenewable resources such as sand and minerals used for construction; and increase pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Poor planning also creates risks to the built infrastructure itself. Projects are more likely to fail or increase significantly in cost when they don't take social concerns and ecological and climate factors into account. WWF is working to ensure a future in which natural infrastructure—the intact ecosystems we all rely on for important benefits like clean water and air—is conserved and the infrastructure we build meets societal needs, all while maintaining or restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services and avoiding or minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.World Wildlife Fund, 2d ago

Whether a child dies from violence (bombs, bullets or bashing) or from being deprived of life-sustaining requisites (food, potable water and medicine), the death is just as final, and the culpability of the perpetrator just as real. However while deaths in war from violence are often hard to assess, avoidable deaths from imposed deprivation can be estimated from comparative demographic data (that have been provided for the years from 1950 onwards by the UN Population Division). The methodology used to estimate avoidable deaths from deprivation is described in detail in my book “Body Count. Global avoidable mortality since 1950” [2].Truth11.com, 1d ago

Energy harvesting (EH) is also known as power harvesting or energy scavenging. It is the process by which ambient energy is captured and, if necessary, stored to provide electricity for small autonomous devices, such as satellites, laptops and nodes in sensor networks. Usually the power is stored as electricity but sometimes it is stored as other energy as with springs storing mechanical energy later converted to electricity as needed. Energy harvesting is a substantial business already and it will become a multi billion dollar business within ten years because, increasingly, it hits so many of the hot buttons - environmental, safe, secure, affordable, more convenient, brand enhancing and making new things possible. So far, the main commercial successes include such things as photovoltaics on space vehicles, road furniture and consumer goods, electrodynamics in bicycle dynamos and wristwatches and piezoelectrics in light switches, indeed many forms of EH in building controls.Off Grid Energy Independence, 3d ago
Space scientists have long identified these lava caves as a likely site for human habitation on the Moon, because the thick walls and ceiling offer protection from the harsh radiation striking the Moon’s surface. But Mr Martin and Dr Benaroya went a step further. Rather than simply situating a Moon base inside a lava tube—domes and shiny buildings and all—they suggested that a section of such a tube could be pressurised with breathable air. Residents could live, work and sleep inside the pressurised tubes with no need for space suits and with plenty of spare real estate for some low-gravity recreation. And although the costs and details need more planning, it could end up cheaper than having to send from Earth everything needed to survive on the lunar surface. The Economist, 4d ago

Second, there is an allocation problem. If subsistence for humans were the issue and all available freshwater were allocation to humans first, then many places would have no freshwater problem. For example, in California, human households only use 5% of all freshwater, and half of that is used for outdoor lawn irrigation. So, human households only use 2.5% of all freshwater in California. The two issues in California are (1) environmental releases into rivers to prevent encroachment of salty ocean water and to preserve wildlife like salmon and (2) for farming. Both are sensitive political issues. Farming is particularly sensitive. Tree nuts and alfalfa consume a third of all water for farming, but the majority of tree nuts are exported outside of the US (i.e., used solely to generate profits), and alfalfa is used for things such as exporting to Saudi Arabia to support their cattle because Saudi Arabia decided they couldn't spare their freshwater for such things. So, much of such types of farming are clearly not necessary for feeding US citizens but profits still represent livelihoods, so this issue generates a huge amount of political heat.slashdot.org, 3d ago

Slow Food, a worldwide organisation promoting traditional cooking, is celebrating women who grow food and preserve food cultures in their daily lives. According to the FAO, women produce between 60 and 80 percent of the food in most developing countries and are responsible for half of the world’s food production, yet their role as food producers and providers—and their critical contribution to household food security—is only recently being recognized. FAO studies confirm that while women are essential to small-scale agriculture, farm labor and day-to-day family subsistence, they experience greater difficulty than men in accessing land, credit, as well as productivity-enhancing inputs and services.fooddigital.com, 4d ago

Because people on Earth rely on space for their safety and security, it is vital to keep satellites safe and secure from natural and human-made hazards. Solar storms can damage satellites in space and electrical transmission lines on Earth, resulting in potentially large and long-lasting power cuts. Meanwhile space debris is increasing, threatening active satellites in orbit. Timely and accurate warnings of threats are needed, alongside measures to deal with them.esa.int, 6d ago

Moss piglets might survive the interplanetary journey (would they even need much of a spaceship?), but only in their dormant tun state. When they wake up, they would need food—plants, algae, and small invertebrate animals—to survive. More likely, if we decide to colonize other worlds, we would send microbes as the first interplanetary life forms from Earth.Big Think, 4d ago

Have you ever wondered what would happen if biodiversity didn’t exist? How serious would the consequences be? The truth is that without biodiversity, the entire support system for human and animal life would collapse. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA, 2005) indicated that the main ecosystem services related to human functioning are fresh water, food, raw materials, medicines, nutrient cycling, wastewater treatment, regulation of infectious diseases and climate, and recreation. Human access to biotic and abiotic elements of the natural environment minimizes threats to both physical and mental health. Consequently, we must realize that the ecosystems around us are essential to life on Earth. We can’t just remove a species. Everything carries greater or lesser consequences.Geoawesomeness, 9d ago
Several studies consistently link poor access to food to poor health outcomes, including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Project Bread, a Massachusetts nonprofit focused on permanently solving food insecurity, teamed up with MassHealth to pilot the Flexible Services Program, or FSP, to bolster food security and meet nutritional needs from birth throughout childhood and beyond, improving health outcomes at every stage of life. Since April 2020, over 7,000 MassHealth members (ranging in age from 0 months to 64 years) with complex health issues were given an array of food resources, including gift cards for groceries, cooking supplies, refrigerators, cooking classes, transportation assistance, and nutrition education.usda.gov, 11d ago

Ecosystem services (ES) are the benefits that people derive from the natural environment, such as clean water, fertile soil, pollination of crops, and natural climate regulation. These services are important because they support human well-being, food security, and the maintenance of biodiversity. The degradation of ecosystems and loss of their services can lead to reduced quality of life and increased poverty, especially for people who depend directly on these services for their livelihoods. Therefore, preserving and managing ecosystems in a sustainable way is crucial for meeting the needs of current and future generations.Eos, 19d ago
