With the advancement in computing and robotics, it is necessary to develop fluent and intuitive methods for interacting with digital systems, augmented/virtual reality(AR/VR) interfaces, and physical robotic systems. Hand motion recognition is widely used to enable these interactions. Hand configuration classification and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint angle detection is important for a comprehensive reconstruction of hand motion. Surface electromyography (sEMG) and other technologies have been used for the detection of hand motions. Forearm ultrasound images provide a musculoskeletal visualization that can be used to understand hand motion. Recent work has shown that these ultrasound images can be classified using machine learning to estimate discrete hand configurations. Estimating both hand configuration and MCP joint angles based on forearm ultrasound has not been addressed in the literature. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based deep learning pipeline for predicting the MCP joint angles. The results for the hand configuration classification were compared by using different machine learning algorithms. Support vector classifiers with different kernels, multi-layer perception, and the proposed CNN has been used to classify the ultrasound images into 11 hand configurations based on activities of daily living. Forearm ultrasound images were acquired from 6 subjects instructed to move their hands according to predefined hand configurations. Motion capture data was acquired to get the finger angles corresponding to the hand movements at different speeds (0.5 Hz, 1 Hz, & 2 Hz) for the index, middle, ring, and pinky fingers. Average classification accuracy of 82.7 ± 9.7% for the proposed CNN and over 80% for SVC for different kernels were observed on a subset of the dataset. An average RMSE of 7.35◦±1.3◦ was obtained between the predicted and the true MCP joint angles. A low latency (6.25 - 9.1 Hz) pipeline has been proposed for estimating both MCP joint angles and hand configuration aimed at real-time control of human-machine interfaces.wpi.edu, 19d ago

The C-Brace is the world's first stance and swing phase control orthosis (SSCO): It controls both the swing and the stance phase during the gait cycle in real time and therefore gives Denise greater freedom of movement. The C-Brace has opened up a whole range of possibilities, making her daily life as a single mother infinitely easier. Initially, it was a question of whether she would meet the physical prerequisites. In principle, the innovative medical device is suitable for all neurological indications of the lower limbs; however, certain muscle functions and a certain level of trunk control are required. Denise was extremely relieved when the initial tests with a diagnostic trial orthosis confirmed that she could use the C-Brace as a therapeutic aid. The leg orthosis is controlled by a microprocessor and consists of thigh, lower leg and foot components, all of which were custom-made for Denise. The integrated sensor technology in the orthosis knee joint constantly measures knee flexion and angular acceleration of the knee. It detects which movement is being performed and how quickly – 100 times per second. This information is passed on to the microprocessor, which controls knee flexion and extension using hydraulics and regulates the required leg support in real time. The C-Brace can therefore support the entire gait cycle dynamically. A smooth gait also means that fewer compensating movements are needed, improving body posture and reducing physical strain. Wireless visual cortical stimulator devices are a type of visual prosthetic used to restore functional vision to blind individuals. They work by providing electrical stimulation that bypasses damaged retinal cells and stimulates healthy cells to induce visual perception. Second Sight announced the first implantation of its Orion I Visual Cortical Prosthesis (Orion I), a wireless visual cortical stimulator, in a 30-year-old blind patient on October 26, 2016. The goal of this implantation was to provide human proof for the ongoing development of the device. Second Sight’s Argus II System, a visual cortical stimulator that received FDA approval in 2013, also provides electrical stimulation to bypass defunct retinal cells and stimulate viable cells. The key difference between Orion I and Argus II System is that Orion I uses wireless technology to restore vision to patients completely blind due to conditions such as glaucoma, cancer, diabetic retinopathy, or trauma. The first implantation of Orion I successfully perceived and localized individual light spots without any side effects.
